Love and War

Bonnie can't help but think life would be so much easier if she didn't have to make choices. If she didn't have to choose between family or a future. If she didn't have to choose between Eli or Alfie. If she didn't have to choose between success or loyalty. If she didn't have to choose between one kind of love of the other.

5. Five

We manage to sneak back into the party and I wash my face to get rid of the makeup before we go back and socialise again but in my mind, I'm still at the pub. In my mind, I'm still talking to Eli. I'm imagining all the conversations we could be having whilst I talk to boring men. I need to see him again.

"Bonnie!" my mother smiles as she approaches me at one point. "Are you enjoying the party?"

"So much!" I lie with enthusiasm. "Thank you for organising it."

"That's okay-" she glances down, frowning. "What on earth happened to your dress?"

I look down and act shocked even though I know it was Eli who ripped it. I gasp, looking at my mother, horrified.

"I have no idea!" I say. "Oh mother, what should I do?"

"Rush upstairs sweetheart, change it." she kisses my forehead quickly. "Go! We shall be bringing the cake out soon."

I run up the stairs with as much grace as possible and rush into my room, taking my dress of. In my haste, my corset loosens and just as I'm trying to tighten it back up again which is more than a challenge to do by myself, I hear somebody clear their throat and yelp, yanking one of the curtains from the bed to cover myself. I'm shocked to see Eli lying on the bed.

"Eli?" I hiss. "What on earth are you doing in here? How-"

"I told you you'd see me again." he winks. "And you left your balcony doors open. Want me to leave?"

"Yes!" I whisper. "Well, no, but my birthday party is happening and you really can't be here."

He laughs and I hush him, not wanting anybody to know I have any kind of man in here let alone a man like Eli.

"You're really innocent, huh?" he says, getting up.

I shrug. "I don't know."

"You're not going to let a thing happen between us, are you?" he smiles his smile.

I frown. "What do you mean? What do I have to stop from happening?"

He stares at me, amusement in his eyes. "Why do you think I was lying on your bed?"

I think for a moment and then gaspas I realise. "Oh my..."

He laughs. "Yes..."

"You don't have anywhere to live!" I exclaim shocked and he sighs, shaking his head.

"That isn't what I meant." he tells me.

"Then what..." I trail off, thinking for a moment. And then I realise what he really meant. My eyes widen as I look at him. "Oh! Oh. No, no, that can't happen."

He chuckles, nodding. "I know. Alright, I'll go."

Eli walks out onto the balcony and I  realise I feel disappointed.

"Eli." I call after him, still wrapped in my bed curtain.

He turns around, eyebrows raised. "Yes?"

"See you." I say with a small smile, really meaning it.

He looks at me as if he means it too. "See you."
