5. Listening To Fiji

Listening to Fiji was written on my gap year and has a lot of memories for me in it. I hope for other readers that it gives an idea of what Fiji was like for me.

A night music of timid ticks,

in my bed between banana leaves.

With a mouthful of orchid poison

a feathered tongue sings to the mountain wall

swallows up the waterfall,

and I dream in aqua sound.

Let me slip into the sea now and

learn the liquid language;

sand tides into my ears

a roar round cochlea shell.

I’m bound by the beach-

Give me the beat played organic

on driftwood.
