He Was Born Because of Me

Alexia and Alex have been best friends since they could walk. However, Alex's dad had to move his family away to Massachusetts, which was too far away from California to visit. When Alex turns sixteen, he moves back to California. Will their friendship be the same? Will Alexia remember him?

6. The Accident

~Decisions can be like car accidents, sudden and full of consequences.~ (Allison Glock)

After debating on where to go for about ten minutes, Alex and I went to a movie and went bowling. I beat him once and he beat me once. No matter what, it always seems like we are in a tie of some sort. The clumsy waiter who brought us our drinks made Alex fall back and hit his head. She said she was sorry, but I know for sure she did it on purpose.

"Alex! Are you alright?" I worried; he's very sensitive sometimes.

"My vision is fuzzy." He complained. I sat him up and told him to rest a while. We ended up staying till the manager had to kick us out for closing time. Sonic was close-by, so we went and ordered smoothies. Maybe that would make him feel better?

His car was parked across the street so when we walked back, I had to be careful to watch for cars passing by. I offered to drive but he kept saying that he's alright. Such a tough boy. Ugh.

When we were on the freeway, I noticed a car that was going particularly slow. I told him to watch out for it, and he just kept his eyes trained on the road; blinking a few times. Then, that split second where you see your life flash before your eyes. The moment where centimeters count in a life-and-death situation. Alex was still complaining about his fuzzy vision, but all I could think about was life and death.

Then the moment where metal hits metal, where glass shatters and cars roll like rolley-pollies across the road, the moment where an ambulance is always heard rushing to and from the hospital. The last moment I experienced while the car was rolling was Alex shielding me with his body from the glass. I know he's in pain, I heard his cries, but I couldn't move. "If I die..right now.." He gasped, "I want you to know that-"  He was out cold. The car was on top of him and he was still shielding me. The people in the other car were rolled away in a gurney and when they finally came to us, Alex was out and I was still half-awake. Crying, miserable, and bleeding, but not as much as Alex was. That fact made me cry even harder.

"Calm down, ma'am. You're going to be alright. Just sit down so we can get these bits of glass off of your arms at the hospital."

"Alex! No, ALEX!" I panicked.

"Your boyfriend is going to be okay!"

"No, you don't understand! I need to be with my best friend! If you're taking him away, take me away in the same car!"

They wheeled me away in the gurney and put me in the same ambulance as him. I held his hand in hopes that he really will be okay.

When I woke up, there were stitches in my arms, a heart rate meter, and a hospital gown. My mother ran in and when she saw me, she cried happy tears. "Alexia, you're alright!"

"Alex." I whispered.

"Alex is alright."

"Mom, I want to see him!"

"No. Not now."

With a few tears of relief, I fell into a comfortable sleep. I'm so glad the accident didn't kill us.
