Something in Common

When bad boy Jason Pierce moves into town, Eden Hartell finds herself awe-struck from the moment they lay eyes on each other. Through trouble, heart-break, plenty of black eyes and a lot of explaining to do, Eden and Jason find themselves falling in love...

5. Straight down the Street

I arrived home at a reasonable time. I threw my bag under my bed and raced over to sit by the window sill. My house is directly across the street from the large forest surrounding our whole town - its like an odd layer of green protection, keeping the bad out, leaving the good in. That's how I think about it, anyway.

I shifted my eyes to a group of boys slumping down the street. When they approached, it was easy to notice Jason at the end, right on the curb. He waved goodbye to his mates, stood on a cigarette to put it out and walked up to the pathway of the house a couple doors down from the forest. I followed him with my eyes right up to the front door, where he shoved it open and slammed it behind him. Then I looked over to the boys. All four of them were already staring at me.

I hopped off the window seat and crossed the room. I changed into something casual, my Nirvana shirt and black shorts, and of course my Converse.

'Mum!' I called through the house, descending the stairs, 'I'm going out for a while!'

I met her in the hallway. She had her hands on her hips.

'Where're you going? Meeting up with Maddy I supposed?'

I shook my head.

'Just getting some air.'

She followed me all the way to the front door.

'Be safe,' she said, as I opened it up. I took a set of keys from the key pot on the hallway table. She'd have to move that - I'd heard about burglars in the area. Not that burglars scared me.

'I will,' I promised, and shut the door behind me. But even I wasn't so sure.
