Something in Common

When bad boy Jason Pierce moves into town, Eden Hartell finds herself awe-struck from the moment they lay eyes on each other. Through trouble, heart-break, plenty of black eyes and a lot of explaining to do, Eden and Jason find themselves falling in love...

20. Bad Thoughts

After such a lame maths lesson, I didn't expect the day to get any better. It didn't.

After tackling a tricky Perren, my initial thoughts were to escape to science with Jason as quickly as I could. But as a wave of students dispersed from other lessons, I found myself lost in the crowds.

'Here,' a voice said, grabbing my elbow. When I looked up it was Perren, who'd somehow followed me through the crowd. He brought me to the side, still holding my elbow. I nudged his hand away.

'That crowd was sudden,' I said, looking over Perren's shoulder to see if I could locate Jason. He was halfway down the corridor. When he spotted me, he started to make his way over.

'Its weird,' Perren was saying, 'because I never thought about anyone in such a way I did with Maddy. But I did. And I'm glad it was you.'

My eyes left Jason's and immediately found Perren's. Backtrack - what had he just said? A few meters behind Perren, Jason came to a stand still. He didn't move, and as far as I could see, he didn't breathe.

'What are you talking about, Perren?' I asked, making brief eye contact with Jason. Maybe if Jason over-heard everything I wouldn't have to go over it all with him later.

'I... I like you. Actually, more than like you, I love you!'

Perren stepped forward and held my shoulders. I pushed him back. Jason didn't move.

'Perren, what are you doing? You have Maddy!' I exclaimed. I couldn't believe this was happening. Why now? He had to be kidding. Although, in all fairness, it would have explained a lot.

'But Maddy doesn't give me that spark anymore. I want what I feel with you.'

Suddenly, Jason grabbed Perren's shoulders, and spun him around. The startled expression on Perren's face gave it all away.

'Eden's with me, bro. What the hell do you think you're doing?'

'Your not right for her, mate. Your a stuck up little American who has no where else to be. Your not going to finish school with the right grades, and the only way your education is heading is to your...'

Jason punched Perren directly between the eyes. He groaned and tried to swing back, but Jason shoved him against the wall, and held him there.

I guess Perren had been thinking the wrong sort of thoughts.

When I got home, I ran up to my room, jumped onto my bed and cried into my pillow. My best friends boyfriend had made a move on me, and she had no idea about it. I even guessed Perren wouldn't have said anything to her. I knew I was right.

When I wiped my eyes and finished sobbing, I slid off the bed and padded over to the window. The sky was gray and threatened rainfall. It was as if the weather changed with my mood sometimes. Not that it made me feel any better.

When I looked down onto the street, I noticed Jason slamming his front door shut. He was headed directly for the front door.

I jumped up. I cleaned my face and left it natural, I brushed through my hair and adjusted my pajamas just in time to hear the doorbell ring. I ran down the stairs and reached the latch before my mum had left her chair in the kitchen. The blank expression on Jason's face told me something was wrong. Horribly wrong.
