Hidden in Dust

In a world full of dark surprises around every corner, Eligio, fights to survive. He is hunted by the very creatures who created him, blood-sucking demons sent from the bottom-most pit of Hell. He and his best friend, Raul, set out to find a safe place to hide. They stumble across a school for their kind, human-demon hybrids, also known as vampires. There they train, defended by the most talented vampires and the great walls that surround the school. They were thought to be safe, but when they find a dark secret lurking in the dungeons below the school they begin to discover the truth, and it could destroy them all.

5. Word of the Wolf

Eligio sat up in his bed late the next morning. Raul was watching him.

"Are you alright?", Eligio asked him.

"You and Eva are starting to freak me out.", he answered.

"Well, get used to it, and stop staring at me. It's creepy."

"I'm not staring at you. I was just admiring your new accessory."

Eligio looked down. He had forgotten to take of the vial from around his neck. He was surprised it hadn't broken while he was sleeping.

"I found it in the basement.", he told Raul, who nodded and stood up.

"Well, is Eva coming to class with us?", he asked.

Eva are you coming with us?, Eligio asked her.

I think I'll go find something to eat, actually. Have fun., she said and slithered away through a small hole in between the stones on the outside wall.

"She wants to hunt.", he told Raul.

"She does know we live on the third floor, right?"

"She'll be fine. Lets go to breakfast. I'm starving!"

At lunch Eligio looked for Kora. He saw her standing by the front door. She smiled and waved at him.

"Hey.", Eligio said as he approached her.

"Hey. Ready to go?"

They ran for their entire lunch period and then walked to class together.

"Thanks for running with me, Eligio."

"Your welcome. I had a great time."

"Me too. We should hang out more often. Just the two of us."

"Sounds like fun." Eligio picked up his pace. "We're going to be late for class."

"Race you!", Kora yelled as she ran down the hall. Eligio ran after her.

Professor Ermanno greeted them as they sat down against the wall. Raul was nowhere to be seen.

"Where's Raul?", Kora asked.

"Maybe he got sick or just didn't want to come." Eligio knew Raul didn't really like Self Defense, so he just assumed that he skipped class.

Kora nodded and focused on the lesson. Eligio watched as Professor Ermanno gently grasped a student by the shoulder and swept his feet out from underneath him. He hit the mat, stunned for a moment, then got back up. It was time for the students to practice and Self Defense was over.

Eligio left Weapons Training with an uneasy feeling and a sore wrist. Where the hell was Raul?! Eligio had gone up to their room before Weapons Training and Raul wasn't there. Eva hadn't seen him since this morning.

When Eligio got back to their room Raul was buried in books, including the one from the basement.

"Where have you been?", Eligio asked him.

"In the library. I thought I recognized the language this was written in," He pointed to the book from the basement, "I was right! It's written in ancient wolf. It dates back before the time of werewolves when they were still hidden in forests and mountains! This is amazing! This book has to be centuries old!"

"So, you're telling me werewolves wrote this."

"No, werewolves studied it. The text is mostly notes. Certain things have been crossed out or rewritten."

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know I've only translated a few pages."

"Well, this is...interesting, but I think you need to sleep. You look exhausted."

"Nope. Sleep." Eligio slammed the books closed and Raul sighed.

"Fine." He changed clothes and climbed in bed. Eligio did the same.

Goodnight, Eligio., Eva said.

Eligio's dreams were filled with werewolves, blood, and memories of a lost brother.
