7. Christmas

December soon arrived; it was my first Christmas away from my family. I planned on going home, but my parents booked a cruise in advance. Phil was going back to home to Newcastle, Dan's family were back in Wokingham, he was hesitant to leave.

"Come on Dan or we'll miss our train." Phil said as they pulled their suitcases along.

"I...I know."
"Are you feeling sorry for Elizabeth? We'll be back for New year, don't worry."
Dan groaned,"But she's going to be by herself on Christmas day. I mean.. Come on!"

I peaked my head through the door, "Oh I thought I heard you both."
They both froze awkwardly, "I was just going to give you your presents. I wasn't too sure what time your train was."
I passed them two gift bags, I smiled as the two boys stared at me, "What is it?"

"Will you be okay?" Phil asked.

"Yeah I mean, it will be quite strange. But it's just one day, also I would be going home too if my family were there." I said happily.

Dan remained quiet, his brown eyes were shallow. I laughed, "Well I hope you both have a nice Christmas and new year."
"You too." Phil replied as he hugged me.

Dan stood stiffly as I was to about to lean in to hug him, he abruptly turned round and walked away. Phil waved quickly and followed him.

I sighed, when I was sure they were both gone my smiled faded. I looked back at their apartment door before retrieving back to my own room. My apartment was hardly decorated and was dully lit, there was only less than a week left until Christmas and I hadn't even thought about it. Maybe because I had no one to share it with.

December 25th. This was the day when I use to wake up excitedly as a child, I would always be up in the early hours in the morning to find what Santa had left in my stocking for me and what awaited under the tree. This year however, I had no Christmas tree or stocking. Only the emptiness of my apartment that reminded how company was absent.

I could hear the happy cheers from neighbors, reminders on the TV and radio. No matter where I turned it was there. Christmas. I left my room to take my medication and to make my breakfast.

As I closed my fridge and walked to the table to eat my toast. I nearly dropped my plate. The whole of my apartment was decorated to the brim. I had a sparkling Christmas tree in my living room with presents underneath, even a stocking near the fireplace that was hardly ever lit.

I quickly glanced round and looked under the sofa and behind the TV, to make sure there was no murders or pedophiles ready to pounce. I opened my door and glanced down the corridor, no sign of anybody. I returned to the apartment, maybe Father Christmas was real? No impossible, but that's the only explanation I could find.

I swiftly changed into a red jumper and leggings, I pulled on my boots and left my apartment. I went outside to investigate, I was going to ask if the security system was working in my apartment, then remembered nobody worked on Christmas day. I couldn't figure it out, nobody who was left in my apartment building would do such a thing. Not even Dan if he was here. Why would someone do that for me of all people?

I cautiously wondered towards the Christmas tree in my apartment upon my return. It was suspicious because there could have been a bomb inside it, esspecially if a strange burglar or terrorist broke in.

I picked up the label, it read, 'To Liz, Merry christmas from Santa.'

I unwrapped it to find a beautifully decorated notebook, the material felt quite expensive. I unwrapped the other presents to find chocolates, a large stuffed lion and jewelery. I couldn't believe it. All the sudden, I spotted someone stood in my living room dressed as Santa.
I shot to my feet, clinging onto the large toy lion, as if I was going to use it as a weapon.

"Shit! What do you want?!" I shrieked.
The Santa stood casually, with a familar bored look in his brown eyes, "I was going to do the whole voice, but I ended up sounding like a perverted old guy. I wouldn't want to make you laugh too much, since I think this is enough."
I recognised that sarcastic sounding Santa's voice, I raised an eyebrow, "Dan...?"

I approached him and pulled the beard down, he sighed as he cheeks grew red, "I over did it, didn't I?"
I threw my arms around him, he stood awkwardly before eventually hugging me back.
"Thank you."
"Oh for all of this? I didn't do all this it was Santa's elves, who happened to have left over decorations and found a reasonably price tree last minute." He told me.

I smiled warmly as we stood near the illuminating tree, "Merry Christmas Dan."

My butterflies fluttered in my chest as his brown eyes gazed into mine, "Merry Christmas."

All the sudden, the door swung open, I gripped onto Dan. To my relief I found it was Phil dressed as an elf carrying a plate of turkey, "Dan I told you to turn the oven on!"

"See I told you I had a elf." Dan said.

I grinned, "But I don't understand I thought you both went home?"
"It's a Christmas miracle!" Phil gasped.

Dan explained how his family understood my situation, so him and Phil had an early Christmas with their families on Christmas eve before quickly coming back to London. I never felt so humbled; it was one of the best Christmas’ ever. We watched the Queen’s speech, Doctor Who, sung a few hymns, well me and Phil did whilst Dan ignored us from his laptop.

“So what are you doing for new years?” Dan asked randomly as the day came to a close.

I shrugged, “I haven’t really planned anything, why are you going home?”
“Nope. Me and Dan are going to have a party at ours, you’re welcome to join us.”
I nodded, “Sounds good.”
“I promise to not get too drunk, as I know you can’t drink.”
“It’s okay, it’ll be funny to see a drunk Dan.”
“Oh he gets so sulky.” Phil commented as he tidied the dishes.

They began to leave my apartment, I smiled, “Okay thanks for the presents, it’s been really nice.”
Phil hugged me before returning to his apartment, Dan leaned in but instead of hugging me he kissed my cheek.

I froze as he pulled away with a smirk on his face, “Merry Christmas Liz.”

He swiftly closed the door behind him as he went back in his apartment, I stared blankly ahead. The palms of my hands felt so sweaty and my face so warm, I shuffled back inside. My cheek was tingly from where Dan’s lips had been, a grin spread across my face. So did this mean Dan liked me?!
