2. Flies up

It's so far away now. It's like a shadow, lurking right out of my line of sight. The demons still poke me now and then, to see if I'm still alive, but they have left me alone for the time being. sometimes when I'm alone, like now, the shadow comes to keep me company in the darkness. It silently reminds me that it's my fault. I know it is.

When the men had first arrived, I had been just as clueless as the other inhabitants. But when they ignighted the fires, it was clear to me that none of us were getting out. The demonic, blood-red flames danced out of the man that i'd made eyecontact with's hand. Then he, the leader I believe, had gestured for the others to lead us away.

"Are you allright?"

a voice tore me out of my musings. As I looked up, I was met by the face of a young man. I nodded slowly and cast my sight down again.

"Did you make a bargain with him too?" My head jerked up. Did I hear him wrong?

"A bargain?" I croaked, my throat suddently drying. He nodded. I searched his eyes before nodding again myself. He gave me a half-smile as he moved to sit down beside me.

"What did you ask for?"

I looked at my hands that were folded in my lap.

"Love," I whispered and closed my eyes. I could feel tears building behind my eyelids. I heard him sigh.

"What was the price?" he asked quietly. I slowly rubbed my face with my hands as I tried to decide whether to tell him or not.

"My life."
