3. the picnic

"You can open your eyes now..." I told Ruby, smiling.

She blinked and looked around. "Con... it's beautiful." She sighed, smiling.

I laughed. "I'm glad you like it."

I had hired a gazebo and decorated it with fairy lights, strung miniature lanterns everywhere and set up a large picnic blanket covered with food.

"Oh Con." She squeezed my hand and kissed my cheek.

"Dessert time!" I called, producing a chocolate cake. Ruby gasped and smiled.

"Babe, I don't expect this! Seriously, this is too much..." She stood up and kissed me softly.

"Pfft. You deserve it." I hugged her tightly and placed the cake on the picnic rug.

"Sweetie, we've only been going out a day..." She reminded me.

"I know. But I feel like we have a connection." I smiled at her and sat down on the rug.

"Me too." She rested her head on my shoulder and stared at the stars. "This has been a perfect night."

"I'm glad you think so." I kissed her neck softly.

"Night babe." She smiled and pulled me closer to her. I placed my lips on hers and smiled.

"Night Ruby." I squeezed her hand and closed the door behind her.

I slowly walked down the stairs, looking at my phone. It was all over facebook. I saw pictures of me and Connor at starbucks and I sighed.

I quietly walked home, looking around at my surroundings. I had never really been in this part of town before. I heard footsteps behind me and I gulped. I turned around slowly. There was no one there. I was praying it was just my imagination.

But something told me it wasn't.

Someone grabbed my hips from behind and I screamed. "What the hell?!"

"Calm down, calm down. It's just me." Brad appeared from the shadows.

"Shit! You dick! I was so freaked out!" I yelled at him.

"Sheesh. It's okay." Brad smiled at me, holding his hands up in defeat. "I come in peace."

I tried to muster a smile. "I'm sorry... I just... I was raped when I was fifteen." Tears filled my eyes.

"Oh wow." Brad's eyes widened. "I'm sorry Rubes. I didn't mean it like that. Sorry." He placed his hand on my shoulder and I smiled lightly.

"It was only... only four years ago..." I looked at the ground. "It still haunts me."

"I'm sorry. It must've been horrible." Brad gave me a hug and I gladly accepted.

"Thanks." I said, my voice muffled.

"You got somewhere to go tonight?" He asked me, smiling.

I blushed at his sweet smile. "Yeah. Just home."

"You want a lift?" He asked me and I nodded.

"Thankyou." I whispered, following him down the street towards a silver car.

"It's okay. You're..." He paused. "You're Con's girl. I don't mind helping out."

I watched as Ruby climbed into my car, her brown hair blowing in the wind. I couldn't help noticing how pretty she was...

I sighed and started my car. "What's your address?" I asked her, staring at the road.

"126 May Avenue." She told me, looking at her phone.

"Who ya texting?" I asked her.

"Con." She looked up. "He wanted to know if I was okay."

"What did you tell him?" I asked.

"I told him I'm fine." She smiled at me.

"Here ya go. 126 May Avenue." I told her, stopping the car.

"Thanks Brad." She hesitated, then quickly kissed me on the cheek and opened the car door.

"Bye." I whispered as she slammed the door closed.
