In Time Gone By

Deep in the Department of Mysteries, there is a room devoted to Time. A bird that continues the endless cycle of hatching and returning to its egg. And a glass cabinet, in which are stored the instruments needed to turn time back...

When a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry obtains a rare permit to use a time-turner, the Headmaster entrusts it to the Potions Master, Severus Snape, for safekeeping. As he sees it there, on his desk, he also relives the worst moment of his life, and realises that he holds the very thing he needs to prevent a murder and make his dearest wish come true. But the laws are there for a reason...

Chapter One

The door to the headmaster's office sprang open and two breathless students tumbled in. Harry Potter ran to the desk at the back of the office and looked around, confused.
A shadow detached itself from a dark corner of the room and resolved itself into a tall man, with long black hair and a emotionless expression. Harry and Hermione both gasped and Hermione took a step back.
'P-professor Snape! What are you doing here!' Harry stuttered, his green eyes darting around the room nervously.
'Mr Potter, Miss Granger, what are you doing out of your beds? I'm afraid I may have to deduct further points from Gryffindor...'
'We were... returning something to Professor Dumbledore.' Hermione said, fingering the thin gold chain that was hanging around her neck.
'Indeed, and what may that be?'
Hermione undid the chain and held out the little golden hourglass. Snape threw it a casual glance, and then froze. Harry looked up at him, apprehensively, but just then, there came footsteps up the stairs and Hermione hid it in her robes. Professor Dumbledore opened the door and glided across the office, blue eyes twinkling, as usual. He ignored Snape and whispered something to Harry, who nodded. Snape moved over to the door and rested his hand on the handle. 'It would appear that I am intruding upon a private conversation, I will come again at a more convenient time,' he said, but Dumbledore straightened up.
'Severus, stay.' he said and then to the children, 'Go, back to your dormitories, before Mr Filch discovers you are out of your beds.'
Snape stepped aside as Harry opened the door. He paused and looked up, but Snape glared at him and he scampered off like a frightened rabbit.
'Severus, can you shut the door?'
Dumbledore was sitting at his desk. Snape shut it, and walked over. He couldn't help but notice the hourglass was now on the desk. Dumbledore noticed him staring at it and smiled.
'Miss Granger has just returned this time-turner. I would like you to take care of it for me until a Ministry official comes to pick it up, as I am going away for a few days.'
Snape blinked and transferred his gaze to the headmaster.
'Will you keep it for me?' Dumbledore asked again. Snape gave a curt nod and picked it up off the desk.
