Life of an Avatar

Nicole Umbrage was adopted at the age of 10 and went 18 years without knowing what she really was until she met him. She was thrown into the world of bending that was totally different then the life she's used to. Secrets are revealed and love is destroyed.

1. Chapter 1

It all started with a 3 week old tiny crying baby left in a box wrapped in a small pink blanket on the front steps of a Christian Orphanage.

That was me.

I don't even know when my actual birthday is the women that ran the orphanage celebrated my birthday on Halloween.

My name is Nicole Umbrage I'm not that 3 week old baby anymore I'm 18 and I was adopted when I was 10 by a great family in the state of South Carolina. I don't know who I got my long golden hair from or my green, brown, reddish, and blue kaleidoscope eyes that looked like they were shifting colors or my big bust and big butt or tiny nose from. I wish I did though.

My life has been turned upside down as I began college at OU (Oklahoma university).

It began to turn bad when I was at Starbucks drinking a frappé and studying for 1st semester finals when I was rudely interrupted. "Hey, babe, can I sit here?" I looked up from my biology book and saw a tall tan guy with dark brown hair, perl white teeth in a red OU shirt and jeans with red supras, but what I noticed was his unusual green, reddish, brown, and blue kaleidoscope eyes....they were just like mine.

I nodded, "Sure." He sat down across from me and pulled out his foreign language book.

I high lighted a few parts in my book before he spoke, "Im Isaac, by the way."

I nodded, "Nicole."

"So majoring in biology I see."

I shook my head, "I'm majoring in school science all together. Biology, anatomy, chemistry. Everything."

He nodded and underlined some things in his book, "Ah makes since. So you want to be a teacher?"

"Science teacher, yes. You're majoring in foreign language, am I correct?"

"Yes. I travel a lot so I need to know different languages."

"Ah makes sense."

He looked up from his book and looked at me, "Tell me about yourself."

I put my highlighter down, "I'm 18. My full name is Nicole Sara Umbrage. I was put up for adoption when I was first born. My birthday is October 31st. I was adopted when I was 10 by a sweet family in South Carolina. And now I'm here, how bout you?"

"My full name is Isaac Leon Kimdem. I'm 20. My story is like yours. I was put up for adoption at a few weeks old. I was adopted at the age of 12 by a family in California. My birthday is unknown so we celebrate it on November 12th."

That's strange. Our story is the same and our eyes are too. "We have the same eyes." He added. I nodded, "I noticed before you even sat down."

He leaned forward, "What do you know about your past?" I shook my head and shrugged, "Nothing at all. Neither did my orphanage or adopted parents. I was just in a box wrapped in a pink blanket on the front steps of a Christian orphanage."

"Our eyes are very unique only a few people in the world have eyes like ours."

"I figured that out a long time ago and usually ones that do go crazy because they think that have powers to bend elements."

"They don't go crazy."

I laughed, "If they think they can bend elements then they're crazy."

"Have you ever truly thought about it though? Maybe it's true. Maybe they can bend elements."

"It's scientifically impossible. I'm majoring in science I would know," I gathered my things and stood up, "I should be going." With that I left for my apartment.

The entire way there I was thinking about what Isaac said. Maybe it is true; maybe they could bend elements. I laughed loudly. No, I thought, it's not possible, at all.

I unlocked my apartment and walked inside throwing my backpack and books on my entry table. I made my way to the kitchen and opened my fridge. I grabbed a water and my container of strawberries then went into my living room and plopped down on my couch. I set my stuff down on the coffee table and picked up the remote. I flipped the TV on and flipped through the channels. There was absolutely nothing on TV which doesn't surprise me considering it's a weekend.

Isaac's POV

I watched Nicole walk quickly away. I just shook my head and muttered, "Good job, Isaac, you scared her away." I started to get up when a hand clamped down on my shoulder, "Sit down, Isaac." Great, just what I need, the leader of my element clan to pay a visit. I sat back down and looked at Ethan. Ethan wasn't an old looking man. He was bald with, of course, kaleidoscope eyes, he was extremely fit and gruff looking. He had on a black business suit and he was an earth bender. Able to control anything with dirt in it and metal. "Did you talk to Nicole?" He asked sitting back in his chair with his arms crossed. "Yes, sir. She doesn't believe me. She is majoring in science she's going to convince herself that bending elements isn't possible."

He nodded.

"Why do you want her in our clan so badly, sir?" I finally asked after wondering for days. He let out a huge breath and leaned forward, "What do you know about the avatar?"

"I know that there hasn't been one in 100 years."

"Back when element benders first came along they wouldn't be marked with anything telling people what they are. But then God decided to mark us with our kaleidoscope eyes. Nicole is special. She is the avatar and if the Nata clan gets her. We're screwed. The entire element bender world is screwed."

I nodded, understanding my mission better, "I'll convince her."

He handed me a slip of paper, "Here's her address."

"What do I do when I just show up at her front door?"

"Show her your powers."

I nodded and looked down at the address: "1209 walnut drive apartment 17B Floor 2." I looked up from the paper and saw that Ethan wasn't there. I groaned and stood up gathering all my things as I did and headed off for her apartment.

What was I going to say? Or do? Do I show her my bending? I was basically screwed when I just show up at her house.

I walked down the sidewalk stepping over the holes and huge cracks.

I didn't know she lived down here; my apartment is down here past her's though. I kept walking until I came to the address. I looked at the old run down apartment building and squinted my eyes trying to see it clearly. The brown paint was faded and all the windows were all cracked and nasty besides 2 windows on the 2nd floor. That was most likely Nicole's apartment. I walked into the apartment and went up the stairs to Nicole's apartment. "17C...17C..." I found the apartment and knocked.

Nicole's POV

I bit into a strawberry and someone knocked on the door. I groaned and woke up then went to the door, "Who is it?"

"It's Isaac."

"How. Did. You. Find. Me?"

"Just open the door." I slowly opened the door and saw Isaac. His Spanish books, pencil, notebook, and highlighter was in his hand and he had this sorrowful look on his face. I leaned against the door frame, "I know I didn't forget anything at Starbucks."

"No, you didn't. I have to talk to you about what I told you." I stood up straight and moved to the side letting him in. "It's scientifically impossible for any one to be able to bend elements." I sighed as I shut the door after he entered my domain. "Just hear me out." He said setting his stuff on my coffee table. "I'm listening." I sat on my couch and looked at him. He was extremely handsome. His kaleidoscope eyes and demeanor made everything about him amazing. I shook my head and stopped drooling over him. "Element benders have been around as long as humans have been around. They used to not be marked by anything well about 100 years ago God started marking them with kaleidoscope eyes like what we have. Every 100 years an Avatar was to be born. An Avatar is a bender that can bend every element; water, earth, air, and fire."

"What are you trying to tell me?"

"Nicole, you're an element bender like me."

"NO IM NOT!! You're crazy!!! Get out of my house!" At this point I was on my feet with my hands at my sides balled into fists. "Let me show you." The red in Isaac's eyes flared up and his hands were red then a ball of fire was in both of his palms. My eyes widened and my mouth dropped, "OH. MY. GOSH." The fire balls disappeared and his eyes went back to normal, "Do you believe me now?" I slowly nodded. I was speechless. Science was wrong for a change...

I just stood there then mumbled, "What element do I bend?" Isaac shrugged, "I don't know."

"How do we tell?"

"What did you love doing when you were young?"

"I loved going to the beach and swimming I was star of the swim team at my high school."

Isaac laughed loudly, "You're a water bender! My opposite."

"Will you teach me how to bend it?"

"Of course." Isaac grabbed my water bottle, opened it, and poured it on my floor. "ISAAC!!!!!!" I screamed running to the kitchen and getting a towel. Isaac took the towel and laughed, "Concentrate on the water. Nothing else. Make it your target. Move it."

I looked at the water and focused on it. After a few minutes I saw water droplets coming off the carpet. I focused more and saw a huge ball of water floating in the air. "Make it move to you." Isaac whispered into my ear. I used all my strength to make it come to me. Isaac extended my hand and watched the water ball gently sit on my palm. I carried it to my sink and let it go.

I gripped my sink as the water flowed down the drain and breathed heavily. "The first time you bend you'll feel funny and weak. The more and more you do it the easier it becomes." Isaac said leaning against the counter. "Why are you telling me this?" I finally asked.

"You're the Avatar. You were born to control all of the elements; water, earth, air, and fire. My clan needs you. We are the good clan of the benders the Nata clan is the evil clan and they are searching for you also. If they convince you to go with them they will train you to destroy the world and make everyone that isn't a bender a slave and everyone that is a bender but not a Nata will be thrown in jail and be killed."

"Great. So, I just learned I'm a bender and now I'm the Avatar and the world depends on me?"

"I'm scared." Isaac put his hand on mine, "Don't be. You're a strong women. You can do this. I know people in my clan that can teach you to bend. I'll be with you every step of the way."

"How do I know if someone is a Nata?"

"They usually have a small tattoo of their symbol, a falcon, somewhere on their body. Our tattoo to recognize us is a YingYang sign somewhere on our body."

"Where's yours?" He lifted his shirt to reveal the YingYang sign on his chest right above his abs. "Nice." I mumbled. He slightly smirked, "I guess." He lowered his shirt and looked me in the eyes, "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. Will you just stay here with me until tomorrow, please?"

"Of course."

I went to get him a pillow and blanket and broke down in tears when I got to the closet with the pillows and blankets. I felt arms wrap around me and someone pulling me into their chest as I cried, "This is all so new to me. Why wasn't I aware of This before? Is this why my parents gave me up for adoption?"

Isaac rubbed my back, "Most benders are given up for adoption because when they're first born whatever element they bend starts reacting funny to them. When I was first born fire used to react funny around me. It would come to me. When I went to a bonfire with my mother and father the flame from the fire went around me. I wasn't burning or crying or anything I just sat on the ground looking at my parents with tears in my eyes because they wouldn't pick me up.

"Then a week later I was in an Orphanage up for adoption." I looked up at Isaac and just examined his face. His chiseled tanned face. His perfect kaleidoscope eyes were shifting colors and they gazed into my eyes.

I wanted to kiss him but I felt like since we just met each other not even 3 hours ago he wouldn't kiss back and he would think I'm weird. He cupped my cheek in his hand and rubbed it with his thumb, "You're very beautiful, Nicole. I don't understand why you don't flaunt it." I closed my eyes. I always wore sweat pants and t-shirts and had my hair always up in a bun with no make up on, I never showed n beauty off because I didn't think I was beautiful only my parents and family ever called me beautiful.

He kissed my forehead and he helped get the pillow and blanket. "Where do you live?" I asked following him into my living room. "I live a few buildings down."

"Why have I never seen you before?"

"I usually go to school, go home, do my work, go to my clan's house, then come home, take a shower, then to bed then repeat all over again the next day."

"Are you single?"

"Yes. I've never found a girl that catches my eye until today."

"What do you mean?"

"I met a girl today that caught my eye and I honestly don't want her to leave my eye."

"Oh.." My face flushed with embarrassment.

"Yep. She's absolutely gorgeous, smart, and relates to me. It's strange how amazing she is."

"You should ask her out.."

"Yeah I should."

I scratched my head and sighed, "I'm gonna go to bed."

"Goodnight." Isaac took his shoes off and got comfy on my couch under the blanket. "How do you remember your childhood?" I asked.

"There's someone in my clan that can make you remember something if you forget it."

"I want to meet him and learn the truth about my childhood."

"I'll take you to her tomorrow."

"Thank you. Goodnight, Isaac, thank you for staying here."

"You're very welcome. Goodnight, Nicole."

I went into my room and stripped then put PJs on and laid in my bed under the covers. Today has been a very interesting day and tomorrow will probably be worse.
