1. Something's not right.

Ruth arrived home late and threw her school bag on the floor, she checked her phone and absentmindedly pushed open her front door. The house was silent. No sign of her Mum, Dad or younger sister.  'Weird' she thought to herself as she went out to the barn to feed the chickens.

She got her pistol from the cabinet nailed to the barn wall just in case there was something funny going on. She slipped it into her back pocket and grabbed a hand full of feed. "Here chickies" she cooed and spread the corn onto the cold concrete of the barn.

But no birds stirred from within the gloom. She straightened up and brushed the straw off her skinny jeans. A noise caught her attention and she looked to the back of the barn. Something, or someone, was standing there "alright what's going on?" She called impatiently to it.

The thing took a step into the light and Ruth was horrified at what she saw. It was her father, but it wasn't. His body was completely mangled and rotting and his eyes were so... Dead. She didn't know what to do but the thing that was once her dad took another step foreward. Ruth was scared and confused "dad?" She asked not moving, a hand on her pistol in her pocket. It said nothing. Just took another step foreward. She ran out the barn and into the house.

she grabbed an old rucksack and stuffed some of her clothes in, a few panicked tears spilling over her cheeks. She ran into her parents room and grabbed a load of ammo from her dad's draw and threw it into her bag. She quickly threw her hair into a plait and pulled on her leather jacket. She ran back into the yard to see her farther had moved to the porch. She shakily loaded her gun and took a shot at it. She pushed past and ran down the road to the edge of the forest boundry line. With one look back at her dear home she sprinted into the forest.
