Tumblr 30 Day Writing Prompt Challenge

Found on the 30 Day Challenge Archive on Tumblr. I feel like I'm not writing as much as I would like, so I am following the challenge from Tumblr but on here.

1. Day 1

Select a book at random in the room. Find a novel or short story. Copy down the last sentence and use this line as the first line of your new story.

My quote:

"Though if one looked closely, the first letter of the name on the headstone might have been a D"*.

Though if one looked closely, the first letter of the name on the headstone might have been a D. The rest, including the date, had eroded with time and weather.

"It is time to let go."

The woman turned around to see a man in a suit behind her. "I can't," her voice broke.

"You can. It has been twenty years." The man rested his hand on her shoulder.

"What is time to me? Once I let go, what happens but the ending of existence?" She glared at him. "I will stay."

"You threaten your own existence by remaining." Ignoring her scoff, he continued, "The next who comes to claim you will ensure you won't see another lifetime."

"There are no other lifetimes. There is no afterlife." She argued.

"You are dead," he said bluntly. "You have been dead so long that your name is nearly gone from your headstone. If you don't come now, when the D is finally removed, you will cease to exist. Do not tie your existence to the material."

"Even if I am dead." She did not want to believe this. "I will be following you to the end of my existence, so I would rather remain where I am comfortable. Leave me be."

He sighed. He turned and left her to fade.

Just a few years later, no one haunted the blank headstone.
