Ace of Blood

Alice has found a new kind of wonderland.
Jamie Cunning is just an ordinary girl. Sort of. Bearing the scars of a thousand painful memories, old an new, she found a strange set of friends in the abandoned and untended headstones of a nearby cemetery. But this girl who prefers the company of the dead to that of the living finds a shocking new life thrust upon her when she is shoved into a world of danger and death. The worst of all: it lurks just around the corner. The paperboy. The school bully. The neighbor. They may all be a part of it. Watch out, because Ace is always watching, and you never know how the cards will fall.

51. Actions of a Fool

Neuf saw it coming, of course. He saw it, as he’d seen the boy who called himself “The White Rabbit” come for the other two. Dix had been first, as her failure had dictated, and Bara second, because it really was his fault for providing the drug. Now it was his turn.
There was no reason, there never had been, never would be. But their Mistress was demanding, and strict, and cruel. She saw mistakes and failures as betrayal, inaction as rebellion, stupidity as a crime.
He watched her tell the foolish brat that it was time for a purge, watched her use her influence over him to make him want it too. And Neuf had been proud.
“I am a fool,” he mumbled, sending the documents to Ace while he still had time. Their leader – useless child though he may be – would want to see them. And then Neuf settled down to await his death.
Coward it read, the dagger the Rabbit brought with him. Was that really how she saw him? As a coward?
Neuf shrugged. He supposed it really didn’t matter anyway.
