Letters to Grandfather

A semi-autobiographical story. Sarah Phillips's grandfather has just passed away. She copes with the loss by writing in a diary like she is writing to him.

Dear Grandad,

The other day I was driving towards Banbury in my Mini Cooper D with Ella and Lizzie, and I almost turned off at the wrong junction.  I realised that I was driving towards yours and Granny’s house.

It must have been because I was thinking about if you were still here I would drive down and surprise you and Granny with a visit.  I always loved visiting you.  Do remember the first dozen times I did that, I had Mum sit in the passenger seat because I was scared of driving on my own even if I was now a fully qualified driver?  Looking back, I needn’t have worried.  It’s funny the things that scare you before don’t anymore.

That reminds you, Granny’s going back to your house this weekend.  Aunt Joan says she’s able to function better on her own now, but I wonder about that.  I’ll pop over next Friday after my morning class, as my other class has been cancelled.  I’ll give her a call later this week first and see if she would like it if I did some shopping for her.

I’ll write again soon.
