6. Reckless End

The next day I visited Connor at the hospital again. It was 4:00 in the evening and I sat next to his bed. The tv was turned on, and Connor was watching this old 1920’s show. As I was looking at his face, I could see he didn’t get much sleep last night. The constant blue and purple circles under his eyes were fading.

I noticed something I never knew before, he had a scar above his left cheek. After I saw it, I didn’t say a word. If I asked why it was there he would constantly nag at me for worrying about him.

A funny scene lit up the room on the tv. Connor laughed, and I could finally see light in his eyes.

He looked at me, and I laughed with him. I was wondering what he thinking in that mind of his.

“Do you like it?” he asked.

“The show,” he said with a persistent stare.

“Yeah, it’s okay.”

Despite what I said he turned the tv off. He could sense that I wasn’t amused.

“You’ve been staring at me all day. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. I was just wondering what you were thinking about.”

“Sometimes I just stare off into the distance,” I chuckled.

My hands were crunched up and pulling my dress down.

“It’ll be okay. I’m scared too.”

“Come here.”

He opened out his arms.
I climbed on the bed and snuggled near him.

With Conor’s arm around me, he moved his hand up and down on my shoulder, letting me know it was okay.

“The doctor said that my levels were going down, so that’s okay.”

“I just passed out.”

“I might be able to go home tomorrow...I’m going to have to measure my levels for now on.”

“Maybe I could come with. I would like to meet your dad-”

“Stepdad,”he interrupted.

“You can’t meet him,” Connor said sternly.

“Trust me, you wouldn’t like him.”

“Connor, you can’t keep me a secret forever. We never get to hangout anymore. Remember what you said before-”

“I regret what he said,” Connor’s face was serious.

“What? What’s wrong with you? Why not?”

“I just have a lot to deal with right now. I’m sorry, we can’t go any further.”

“If this about your stepdad I can make things right-”

“No, it’s not about him.”

I was now sitting up, and Connor had his arm on his leg. Connor’s eyes were staring at the wall, and it was if he was possessed. The room was grey with a little light, and the walls were a baby blue.

We waited a little while until the nurse came in.

“We're about to lock up okay?”she reassured me.

“Okay,”I said forcing the words out of my mouth.

The IV was making a dripping noise as it made it’s way into Connor’s vein.

“Actually, I think I’ll just go now-”

As I slid off the bed Connor stopped me. His hand grabbed my, I could feel his cold pale skin make it’s way onto me. I want to let go, but he kept pulling me under. Into Connor’s twisted game I went.

“Don’t...don’t let this tear us apart.”

“All this time I was wondering what it was like to have someone love me. Now that I do I take it for granted. Everyone eventually leaves me, and you stayed.”

“We’ll talk after this. I promise.”

Connor finally let go and my pulse stopped beating heavily. I stood there for a minute looking at him.

Connor was laying there with his brown eyes turned towards me. The nurse came back.

“Someone wants to see you Connor,” she was smiling.

The man that came towards the door was  big, handsome, and grim. With his shoulders broad back, he entered the room and came to Connor's bed. Shocked at who he was I didn’t move. The nurse was calling my name, but I didn’t notice. The feeling I had was mutual for this man, his movements seemed precise and sinister. He had on a brown jacket that matched his dress shoes. His eyes were a yellow, brownish color that had a tint of red. His face had a stern beard, and his hair matched the same color, black.

“Excuse me.”

“Excuse me, who are you?”

The nurse looked at me, and showed me to the door.

The last glance I took was at Connor.

He snapped me out of it.

"Excuse me miss, you have to go."
