7. Chapter Six

The Voice of Mom knocked on my door that night as I laid in bed, staring up at the stars on an unusually clear night. "What?" I snapped.

Voice of Mom quietly, gently entered the room. "Maddie, I need to tell you something." she whispered, coming to sit on the foot of my bed. Instinctively, I winced at her closeness and scooted closer to the headboard.

"What is it, Mother?" I growled. "I need to sleep."

"Madison, I'm pregnant."

This news had a weird effect on me. At first, I was silent - I didn't know how to speak, I had no idea how to react . . . then, I wondered who on Earth the father could be. But after a while, I was furious.

"So you're trying to replace Melanie? You think you can reincarnate her in some baby?" I snapped. You're being ridiculous, my conscience told me.

"Madison, I could never replace Mellie . . ." Voice of Mom was shocked and hurt, this was visible in her voice. Quickly, she cleared her throat. "I'm going away soon, until the baby's born, and then I'm putting it up for adoption. I don't want another child."

I popped up and glared at my mother. "Why?"

"I . . ." she thought about what to say for a moment. "Melanie was very close to your father, and I don't want him to get the wrong idea. I don't want him to think that I'm trying to replace her. That's why I don't want to tell him about it."

The truth is, Dad's not the father. I thought. "Why are you telling me?"

"So that you can care for your brother and sister while I'm gone, dear." Voice of Mom looked exhausted. "I'll be gone when you wake up."

I said nothing, but after she'd left the room I muttered "Good riddance."
