6. Oraks - Adwr

     ~ Chapter Five ~

"What is this place called?"

"Oraks," Zarcra answered. She continued with something else. Her lips were moving, but I might as well have been deaf, because I heard nothing.

"Oraks?" I asked, trembling at the mere memory of the horrible place. I had never actually been, but my father had.

One day, soon before his death, he came home, raving like an escaped convict from the mental ward. He told me of Oraks, the place where he "learned the answer to resolve the war." He called for an appointment of sorts with the General, and while waiting those three incredibly slow days, he kept himself locked away in his study, writing notes everywhere. Written on paper (in his sloppy left-handed writing), painted on the desk, carved in the walls. But they made no sense. He was simply mad.

Right before the appointment that he had been waiting for, while I was at school and Mom was out shopping, he lost it completely. While in his study, he shot himself. He was found by Mom, with the gun in his hand. He was surrounded by the notes he left. Just two words.

     Meg's hat.

Like I said, he was driven mad after having been to Oraks.

I had been called to report on my first day of school. Having been a young child, I was given the day off. That was when I met Grazyna. She had run away and was walking outside when she saw me, crying on the sidewalk just outside my house. She asked me what was wrong. I told her nothing, and she replied with, "You're a really bad liar."

     Best friends ever since.

"What is it, Adwr?" Grazyna asked.

"N - Nothing. Nothing at all."

"Why are you being so secretive! You haven't told me a thing! What is it?"

"People go mad," I admitted. " I know someone who went absolutely crazy after going there."

"No, dearie," Zarcra told me. "The Oracle gives peace of mind, not loss of it."

"Who was this person?" Grazyna questioned, curious.

"No one," I lied. I hated not telling the truth, especially when it was my best friend I was lying to, but I didn't want to admit my father went bananas. She didn't even know that Atmos was my step-father.

"Have I ever told you how bad a liar you are?"
