3. Chapter Three

When I wake it's dark outside. I check the time on my phone I left sitting on the bedside table. It reads 1:15 am. I put the phone back on the table and roll over on my side.

I start to drift off again when suddenly I get the feeling someone is watching me. I wait a few seconds then I sit up and look around. For a moment I see nothing, then I turn to my right and see the white glowing thing I saw yesterday in the living room while mom looked for the light switch.

I stifle a scream and it motions for me to be quiet. It moves towards me and I freeze. For a moment it does nothing but look at me. Then it says "Hello."

I try to back away and almost fall off the bed. I look at it more closely. I start to see a face, a boy's face. Then, a body to go with the face.

"I'm sorry if I startled you." he says. "My name is Nick. Your name is Jade, right?"

All I can do is nod. I can't find my voice. It's silent for a moment. then he says, "I'm sorry. I didn't know I would scare you. I'm friendly, I would never hurt anyone or scare anyone on purpose."

I finally find my voice. "Are you the thing I saw earlier when I got here?" I ask him.

"Yes" he says. His eyes lock on mine and we sit there looking at each other for a few minutes. Then he breaks the silence. "I know we just met but I was wondering I few could be friends? I mean I know I'm a ghost but you're the first person I've talked to in years. Please?"

"Sure. We can be friends." I tell him. "But on one condition, no sneaking up on me."

Okay. I wont sneak up on you." he says. then he asks, "Why were you crying earlier?"

        "It's nothing."

"I don't think it was nothing. You came out of the bathroom with tears running down your face."

"Wait. You were spying on me? Even when I was in the shower?"

"No I just stayed in here and waited for you. I swear, I wasn't spying on you. I would never do that." he says, panicking.

"You better not have." I say. I lay down on the bed and stare at him. His black hair, blue eyes. A few minutes pass, then I ask the one thing that's been running through my mind. "How did you die? I mean I'm not trying to be rude. I was just wondering."

        "I didn't die. I was cursed."

"When did it happen?" I ask him, and then instantly regret it. "I'm sorry I'm asking all these questions. I just want to get to know you better."

"It's okay. It happened a few years ago." he says. He sits down on the side of the bed and pulls his knees up to his chest.

        "How old are you?"

"I'm 16. How old are you?"

        "I'm 15."

He looks at me and smiles. "So, since I told you a little about me, can you tell me why you were crying?"

"I was crying because I just moved here and I didn't have a choice. My mom married the man who lives here and we had to move. I didn't want to leave Denver. I didn't want to leave my friends." I tell him while trying to hold back tears.

"It'll be okay. It's great here. We have friendly people and parks to hang out at." he says. Then he made a face that looked like he just realized something.

"I just realized that I'm your first friend here." he says and smiles at me.

"Yes you are. And I'm glad I met you." I say returning his smile.

"I'm glad we met too." he says. "You should get some sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."

Nick smiles and says, "I promise. Good night, Jade, sweet dreams."

"Good night, Nick." I say and drift off to sleep.
