23. Chapter Twenty Two - Baxter

Baxter was almost to the hospital when his phone rang. He skidded to a stop and answered. "Yello?"

"Bax, you need to be Darkfeather for a few hours. We're supposed to escort Jess to Arkham."

Baxter's blood ran cold for a split second before he cleared his throat, pretending not to be worried or disappointed. "What did she do this time?"

"Actually, she didn't do anything. It's more for security reasons. To keep Joker and Quinn out, and to contain her while they try to find her a foster home. They're trying to get ahold of Jessica too."

"Foster home?" Baxter had heard enough horror stories about foster homes. "Is that necessary? She's perfectly happy with her parents."

"It's not about whether she's happy. It's about whether or not she lives in a safe environment with sane people."

That sounded rehearsed. It probably was. "You guessed every argument ahead of time so you'd have a reply, didn't you?"

"A little. Now get your ass into that costume." The line went dead, and Baxter resisted the urge to flip off the phone.

Baxter, grumbling, ducked into a dark alley.
