4. Chapter Three - Deux

Almost-twelve-year-old Deux Isley Dent had been infatuated with Jess Ter Quinn Niche for as long as he could remember.

He didn't know why. She was pretty and smart and dangerous, but she wasn't exactly his type. He didn't generally like the whole blonde-hair-blue-eyes-with-brains combination on anyone but her. And for some odd reason, he wasn't head-over-heels for her identical twin sister either.

But love isn't really a choice, and Deux was in love with Jess.

He was convinced it wasn't just a childhood crush. He'd liked her as long as he had lived. She was only six months older than he, and their parents had worked together on more than one occasion in the past, especially his mother and her mother. They'd pretty much been playmates since before he was even one every time their parents were off on a heist. After all, Harley Quinn was Poison Ivy's go-to babysitter and vice versa.

His heart sped up when he was around her, but he tried to keep his cool guy cover. He thought he succeeded most times, but he'd slip up sooner or later.

He ran a hand through his collar-length red hair and looked out the window of his father's place, his dark eyes reflected back at him. His one-year-old sister, Fleur, was fast asleep by now. But Deux . . . Deux was finding it impossible to catch some shut-eye.

After all, secondary school was starting in the morning, and he'd promised himself long ago that he'd ask Jess out the first day of seventh grade.

He heard a sudden explosion and the night sky was momentarily lit up by an orange and yellow blast. Looks like Jess is gonna make that a yearly thing. he thought to himself.

Finally, he collapsed back onto his bed, pulling a quarter out of his pocket. He flipped it, and it landed on heads.

Looks like I'm gonna make my move tomorrow, he thought, falling into a fitful sleep.
