7. Chapter Six - Baxter

Welcome to Gotham Secondary School, Home of the Bats!

Baxter had never ceased to find it entertaining how his father was the most important thing to Gotham City. The brooding emo that was his dad had the city in the palm of his hand, with the combination of running Wayne Enterprises and being Batman. Baxter got a few benefits from this, too, but he didn't like to brag about or use it.

Baxter settled into a seat in the auditorium, a little ways away from the rest of the students. Other people had always baffled him, especially since he hadn't seen the outside of Wayne Manor until that morning. He wasn't quite at the antisocial level of his father, but he was still a little bit of a loner.

He heard a distinct laugh and looked over to find the owner. It sounded a tad bit like the laugh of the Clown Prince of Crime.

The laugh's owner was Jess Ter Quinn Niche, the girl whose file he'd seen two years earlier.

She was with a girl totally identical to her except with curlier hair and a boy a little taller than her with red hair that he assumed was Poison Ivy's son. An older girl - Mad Hatter's daughter, he figured - was a little bit behind them, looking a little bit out of place.

Thanks to his mother, who had connections with the villains of Gotham, he knew a lot about the so-called Kids of Gotham. He knew that Jess and Jessica, the Quinn twins, were immune to Joker toxin and used it often. He knew that Deux carried around a quarter so that he could turn everything into a game of chance. He knew that Alice was in an abusive relationship with some rich boy from Metropolis. He knew things about the three younger members, too, but he didn't give them much thought - they weren't threats to Gotham quite yet.

Then he noticed that he was being stared at.

The girl was in maybe seventh grade. She had short caramel brown hair and hazel eyes, and gave an air of being popular. Baxter smiled politely at her and turned back.

The Kids of Gotham had already gone.

The girl that had been staring at him was Whitney Carver. Whitney wanted Baxter, but she'd seen him staring at Jess. She'd never really cared about Jess before, but if she was standing in her way of getting Baxter Wayne, then Jess would fall.
