6. An unexpected return

Chapter 6:

I danced around, humming. Pouring the batter into the frying pan, I watched as it spread out. Jess and I were making chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, as it was our tradition for every Sunday. The radio was on full blast and we sung loudly as Fall Out Boy came on.

“Say YEAHHHHHH lets be alone together” We yelled as we flipped our pancakes expertly, you might say we were just a little hyper. Groaning, Justin entered the room, wincing at the loud music as if he had a headache. I flicked him as I skipped past to get out the ice cream and plates. I smothered my pancake in ice cream, it looked delicious. Plopping down on the couch, I turned our TV on to see if anything good was on.

"YAY! Jess Sherlocks on." I yelled, and Jess simply responded with loud thudding sounds as she ran through the apartment.

"Eugh. Benedict Cumberbatch is so good looking" Jess stated, and I most definitely agreed. It was the scandal in Belgravia, and Justin entered the room just as Irene was dropping her robe.

"And I always thought this programme was nerdy" he said, eyes intently watching the screen, as he pushed me off the sofa.

As the end credits rolled I felt my phone go off. Looking down at it, it told me I had a text from an unknown number. The text read “Hey stole your phone number whilst you and Jess were in your room, hope you don’t mind, Dan” I smiled reading this, and quickly saved his number and replied.

Gabrielle: ah cool :).

I wish I could have thought of something better to say, but my nerdiness was kicking in and I didn’t really like texting boys. Jess saw me smiling at my phone and laughed.

"Loverboy texting you?" I sighed and nodded my head. She grinned at me, her smile not too far away from a shark. Sundays were our lazy days, and even though it may be half 2, we were sitting round in our pj’s on our laptops. I was now just typing up an essay for English lit, on Shakespeare. Justin seemed to be laughing at whatever he was looking at on his laptop and I wondered over to see.

"Oh god! Delete it!" It was a picture of me sleeping; I looked like a 12 year old, hugging my teddy "when is this even from?" I asked, wondering when he had managed to get the photo. He simply tapped his nose causing me to scowl. Stupid boy. I flicked the top of his ear, to voice my distaste of such a strange picture of me. Sitting back down at my laptop I felt my phone buzz.

Dan: what you been doing today?

My answer to this would be far from interesting.

Gabrielle: lazy day- hbu??

Sending this off, I picked up my laptop, and typed up the starts of an English essay.

Shakespeare wasn’t really very interesting, so I went on to Facebook. Now on Facebook I only have say 50 friends, and out of this 50, none of them were on. I sighed.  There was nothing to do! Looking over at Jess I saw her giggling at her phone.

“Talking to your boyfriend?” I said smiling. She nodded her head and showed the text he had just sent her.

Peter: I love you baby girl.

EW. I hated it when boys call their girlfriends baby girl, I smiled at Jess as it I thought it was a good thing that her boyfriend had said this.

“Awhhhh he is so cute!” She told me, saying how this is like the tenth billion time today that he had said I love you. I acted as if   I was interested, when really I was thinking about when Dan was going to reply.  I span my phone around in my hand absentmindedly, looking at the black screen. Hoping vigorously that it would make a sound, a single reply from Dan would make this dull day a lot better. Justin came back from the kitchen with a sandwich for me, looking at the clock it was half 2. I still hadn’t got a reply from Dan.

“Gabrielle. What are you waiting for?” Jess said sternly “I am fed up of watching you sitting there like a pining puppy.” I sighed and mumbled something about Dan.

“Oh, are you guys going out?” Justin asked, looking up from his laptop. Oh dear. These guys really were clueless.

“I am not ever going to go out with him. He is way out of my league. Now can you all just forget about it? I am simply waiting for him to text me back” The twins replied to this with a load of snarky remarks, which I ignored. Thud. There was a knock on the door. We all looked at each other surprised.

“Were you expecting visitors?” I asked Jess. She shook her head.

“Well I better go and answer the door then.” Justin replied Jess and I hot on his heels. Precariously opening the door, Justin’s face lit up as soon as he saw who was standing there.

“LIZZIE!” We screamed, it was Jess and Justin’s cousin, and our other best friend.  Clamping her into a bit family bear hug she laughed and told us she was pleased to see us too. Lizzie had lived with the twins for nearly all their lives, she was an orphan, and her parents had died in a car crash. Being a year or two younger than us she had only just finished her first year at college.

“What are you doing here?” I gasped, she still lived in Yorkshire.

“Oh you know… Err…” She didn’t really answer more let out a stream of mumbles. We are gave her questioning look and she sighed in defeat. “I had an argument with Mum, as I came home drunk from a boy’s party.” Oh god. That was not good. The twin’s mum was rather strict, and a stunt like that was the top of her ban list.

The twins moaned. “Lizzie, you crazy child. Did she kick you out? Go mental?” Justin questioned, staring at his cousin in disbelief.

“No she just kind of, told me to go and visit you for a bit. To see if you could make go back to being the good well behaved young child I once was.” Lizzie laughed. We all soon joined in the laughter.  The twins certainly weren’t the type of people you would use as an example for good well behaved children. They pulled pranks all the way through secondary school, and were only now that they had started to become respectable adults.

In order to celebrate the long lost best friend’s arrival, we were going to have a special dinner. A.K.A Chinese takeaway. Jess and I headed off to the local co-op, to see if we could buy any snacks. Walking down the sweets isle, a boy caught my eye.

“Jess. Jess. Oh God. We have to leave” I urgently said to her, I couldn’t be seen by him. I thought I was going to have a panic attack as it felt like my throat was closing up.

“What nerd?” Jess said looking around. Then she saw him. Pushing me towards the doors, she told me she would go to a self-check out and meet me out side in a minute. I couldn’t believe he was here; there was no reason for him to be here. Why couldn’t he just leave me alone? I felt like I had fallen back in to the black hole that I had been trapped in all that time ago.  The cold air was soothing on my face, but my brain had gone into meltdown.

Suddenly I felt a hand on my back, and I jumped a mile in to the air. Spinning round, I saw it was only Phil. To begin with he was laughing but then he saw my face.

“Gabrielle? What’s wrong?” he said holding me by the shoulders so I had to look him in the eyes. I simply shook my head at him; it was too long to explain now. Raised voices, echoed out the doorway of the shop.  I recognised one of them as Jess’s, and the other was definitely a males. “Is that Jess?” Asked Phil sounding concerned. Just as I was nodding my head, the argument came the through the door.

“Tom! Just leave her alone? Have you not already done enough?” It was him. Just like I thought it was going to be.

“I love her Jess. I don’t think you understand. I need her.” That voice that sounded like velvet but coated a snakes tongue.  “Gabrielle!” He had seen me.

“What’s the problem?” Phil walked over to Tom; I silently prayed in my head that nothing would happen to him.

“Who are you?” Demanded Tom, anger painted over his angelic looking face. Phil look taken a back at the deep buried anger in his voice, his face hardened.

“I am Gabrielle’s and Jess’s friend. Who are you?” Phil squared up to him, being ever so slightly taller, though he looked about as harmless a butterfly. Not bothering to answer, Tom shoved Phil and started to approach me. I winced away from him, trying to make myself as small as possible.

“Don’t touch her” Dan. A wash of relief flooded through me. Now Dan is like the least scary looking person ever next to Phil, but the look in his eyes then made him look as if he could kill. Tom looked as if he had been slapped. “What? Why are you with all these boys Gabs?” Tom said his voice spitting venom. I cowered backwards into Dan who was now standing behind me. He whispered that he would sort this out to me in my ear and took a courageous step forwards.

“I’m her boyfriend.” That was not what I was expecting to hear.
