12 Days *COMPLETE*

People always use the saying "When one door closes another one opens". For me this was the chance to save my best friend's brothers life or to lose mine.

3. The Dead is Awoken

The rest of the day went by like a blur. I only remembered watching Cole’s casket being slowly lowered into the ground. That night I went back to my house and fell asleep happy which was odd since one of my best friends was dead. I was suddenly woken up at midnight to a sharp pain in my wrist. I turned on my lamp and looked at my wrist to see what was wrong. I saw something appearing onto my wrist in black ink. Once it was done my wrist had 12 on it. The 12 stood for the number of days left that I had to save Cole. Once I finished looking at my wrist I turned off my lamp and fell deep into sleep. I woke up the next morning to my alarm going off and I got out of bed to get ready for school. My plan was to dump my boyfriend Jeremy today and somehow make Cole fall in love with me. I did my hair and makeup and put on a really cute outfit. I looked into the mirror before I left for the bus and thought this outfit would make Jeremy smile but I couldn’t think about Jeremy. I needed to think about Cole now. I walked to the bus stop and saw Jeremy waiting for me by the STOP sign. I smiled at him and thought I don’t think he’ll mind me ending things with him. He’s a flirt. When I reached him I looked at him and quickly said “I think we should see other people.” He looked at me and slowly nodded before walking away. Well that was easier that I expected. Just then Cassidy and Cole were walking to the bus stop and the waved at me. We all hugged and the bus pulled up. We all waited to get on and once we did we went straight to the back. I sat with Cassidy and Cole sat by himself in the little seat across from us.

Once we got to school we walked to our lockers to get our English binders. I walked towards Cassidy and Cole’s lockers once I grabbed my supplied and remembered how Cassidy had told me once that Cole had a thing for me. I hope he still does I thought to myself. Once I got to their lockers we walked to Mr. Collin’s class and took our seats. When I look over at Cole and smiled, he smiled back but I could still see some hurt in his eyes. He must be upset about the thing that killed him in the first place. Now that I think about it Cole is kind of cute. Mr. Collin’s started his class and I zone out half way though. Once class is over I ask Cole “Do you want to go get some Starbucks after school today?” He smiled and says “I would love to.” Step one to getting Cole to fall in love with me is complete! The rest of the school day goes by slow and results in me zoning out in all of my classes.

Once the final bell rings I meet Cole at his locker and we start walking to the Starbucks that is around the corner. We order our drinks and once we get them we sit down in a booth. We started talking and he brought up how the person who I thought was his father is really his stepfather. He told me that his dad died when he was three and his mom got remarried shortly after. Her second marriage didn’t last. His mom’s ex was an alcoholic and abused her. She divorced him and four years ago his mom met a man named Samuel and it was love at first sight. They got married and it came to an end when her ex from her second marriage came back and killed Sam. It was horrible for me to hear. Cole said “He couldn’t stand the thought of anyone else being with my mother so he took matters into his own hands.” I hugged him and told him how sorry I was. I can’t imagine that happening to me. Cole then looked me in the eye and said “Cass and I saw Sam die. We saw my mom’s ex pull the trigger that ended his life.” I hugged him again. Our parents soon showed up to bring us home.  Before we left the building to get into our parents’ cars Cole looked me in the eye and kissed me. He kissed me!

Once I got back home my mom went inside and I ran across the road to go get the mail. When I opened my house door I yelled hello to my father but I didn’t get a response. That was strange. I walked into the kitchen which was where I was sure my parents were and I stopped cold in the hallway.  My parents sat at the kitchen table, frozen. A man with bright blue eyes stood behind them and he seemed to be waiting for me.
