2. Chapter One

The bright winter sun shone through the twins bedroom and hit the younger of the two in the face as he lay sleeping on his bunk. The red haired boy rubbed his eyes and sat up carefully so not to hit his head on the bed above his. With tired brown eyes he looked up and hit the bottom of the other boys mattress,

“Eli! Get up!” his surprisingly deep, sleepy voice called to the other red headed boy who threw his spare pillow down to his brother with some force.

“Go back to sleep Xavier” the other boy ordered laying back with his hands behind his head. Elijah Clifton wasn't a morning person, as opposed to his brother Xavier Clifton who could wake up any time in the morning and be a ball of energy.

“Come on Eli! 4 Days till Christmas!” Xavier rolled off his bunk onto his palms and formed a press up position and commencing his morning routine of 20 press ups before getting dressed and going for a quick run. Elijah groaned and sat up, swinging his legs over the edge and sitting there to watch his brother,

“I told you don’t call me that, I’m not a girl an-”

“Then come running with me today!” Xavier said doing his 12th press up. Xavier was the more muscular of the twins, with stronger legs and less freckles on his cheeks. His back and arms were a complex of different muscles and he worked almost constantly to make himself better. The older boy sighed and jumped off the bed, Elijah had less obvious muscles but was still strong. His limbs were a lot thinner than his twin but he didn't care, he thought it was better that way so people didn't get them confused in public and at school.

“I told you, running isn-”

“Your thing” Xavier mimicked his brothers slightly higher voice and sighed “I know, but if you want to work on those leg muscles it’ll be good for you!”

“Who lays I want stronger leg muscles?” Elijah argued crossing his arms. Xavier finished his last push up and rolled onto his back to look at his brother,

“It was just a suggestion” he said before springing himself up to his feet and standing properly, “now if you don’t mind” he rushed his brother out of the room “you need to eat breakfast and I need to change and go running.”

It was 5 minutes before Xavier came bounding down the stairs and into the kitchen where his twin, brown haired, brown eyed mother and red haired, green eyed father were sat around the round kitchen table. He rushed in whistling and grinned at his parents before moving himself quickly out of the back door. His father rolled his eyes and shook his head with a smile. David Clifton was a tall man with envious green eyes and flaming red hair, just like his sons. He sat at the table with a small plate of toast in front of him and that mornings newspaper in his left hand and cup of coffee in his right.

Their mother, Janet Clifton was a slightly smaller figure with dark brown hair that reached the bottom of her shoulder blades and chocolate brown eyes that shone with happiness every time she was with her children. Then finally, there were some light footsteps on the stairs and a petite figure appeared in the kitchen doorway. A young child at least 7 years younger than her 15 year old siblings stood, still in her PJ’s like her older brother and rubbed her left eye with a yawn. The girl had green eyes like her father and brown eyes like her mother. Sandy Clifton was a sweet little girl to most but to her older brothers, she was pure evil in child form.

“Morning mummy, morning daddy” she smiled going over to the table and sitting between them and opposite Elijah.

“Forgetting anyone?” Elijah asked glaring at her subtly. She shook her head,

“Nah, I said morning to Xavier before he left” she smiled before picking a piece of toast off the plate her mother had set up for her.

It was half an hour after Sandy had made an appearance in the kitchen and Xavier still wasn't back from his run, which was unusual for the teenage boy. His mother stood staring out the back window to keep an eye out for him, while his father took the front room window. Elijah however sat in his room, at the desk by the window and glanced out every now and then to see if he brother had returned.

An hour, an hour and a half, two hours… This was weird and Elijah didn't like it. What if something had happened to Xavier? What if he’s hurt? What if-

The door to his bedroom opened and his father walked in. His face was long and he was no longer wearing his white and blue striped PJ’s but a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and a denim jacket.

“Your mum and I are going to look for Xavier” he said standing in the doorway, “if he comes back, call us okay?”

“Okay” Elijah said quietly looking back out the window, this wasn't right.

Xavier ran down the road of his street before reaching the forest he’d always wanted to run through but had been banned from by his mum and dad. He stood at the entrance to the cold looking forest and smirked before running carefully into the gap between some trees. Lucky for him the sun was bright and the forest was lit up, causing bits of frost and snow to glimmer and crunch under his dirty black and red trainers. Every step he took was taking him farther into the cold woods and he eventually stopped running. He stood quietly and glanced around, keeping his feet still to not make any noise.

“Hello?” it was as if he felt someone watching him, but he couldn't be sure. Xavier’s hair moved softly in the cold wind and the hairs on his arms and back of his neck stood up on ends as he turned. There was no one there.

Xavier moved farther into the the forest as the ground crunched beneath his feet. The red haired boy kept glancing to his side and behind him, feeling as if he shouldn't have gone against his mother's wish. He crossed his arms and causing his red hoodie to tug at his shoulders slightly.

“I shouldn't have come out here…” he muttered to himself “my mums gonna kill me…”

“You should go home then.”
