Keeping Dauntless Company

June was named for the intensity and heat she brings, Jaws was named for how he constantly spoke no matter the time, and Mercy was named after her compassion. The three were best friends, until the factions shattered under their feet. With nowhere to go, they ran to the Fringe to find a home. That is, until the secrets, the fear, and the rest of the world started to get to them. How long does it take, before the former dauntless teenagers collapse under the weight of the real world?

1. June

The Fringe scared me. I never knew a place like that existed, maybe for the factionless, but they were never that bad. My breath made clouds in front of me as I walked, making me feel as if I were breathing out smoke. "Jaws!" I yelled, "Get over here, I need some help!"

A scrawny boy appeared around a corner, a small grin playing across his boyish features. His brown eyes sparkled with curiosity, as his black hair fell across his forehead, bouncing slowly with every step he took towards me. He looked younger than he was, which was eighteen. However, he looked fourteen when he walked hunched over like an old man.

"What do you need help with?" He asked, looking up at me due to our significant height differences. I motioned back the way I had come from. He just gave me a confused look.

"The old lady from the tent with the cross drawn on it, remember her?" I queried the boy and he nodded, "She died last night, heart attack. I went in to check on her and she was dead. We are the only people who know though as of right now, so we need to get there, collect the supplies, and hurry back before we are caught." My explanation seemed to make Jaws excited and he nodded vigorously.

"Ok let's do it." He said, giving me a glance out of the corner of his eye. He did a mock bow, letting me know to take the front, and I did. Whenever we passed the others, I looked straight to my worn grey shoes, to let them know I didn't want any trouble.

My mind slowly wandered to the day we ran from the city. We didn't have to leave, but it was all too strange living in a place where so much violence had taken place. It would have been thought that we could handle it, after all we were dauntless. However, some things just couldn't be forgotten, brave or not.

We had left in a hurry, afraid the government would go back on their word and erase our memories, maybe even lock us all in again. I couldn't stand the thought of losing my memory though, it was all I had left to cling to.

So we ran. We ran until we reached a place people called the Fringe. It was terrifying. The first night I heard Mercy crying to herself, as we lay out on an open street due to lack of shelter. It was unfair, asking Mercy to do something to terrifying. She was only a ten year old girl, who had lost her mother when the Allegiant rose up to fight the Factionless Army. A fight her mother didn't live to see the end of.

I stumbled over a branch in the way of my path and snarl, as I kicked it out of my way. "How much longer?" Jaws whined just as our destination came into view.

"Only take what is needed, food, blankets, fluids. Anything more will draw attention to us." And could get us killed, is what I didn't say. Jaws nods excitedly and quickly walks into the tent, I stood guard outside.

I waited for a while, but he didn't come back out. I began to grow agitated. "Jaws! You need to hurry-?" As I shove the tent flap open I stop my sentence. There, in the corner of the tent was a speechless, shocked, terrified version of Jaws. "What happened?" I asked quietly, so nobody outside would hear.

Jaws rose a shaky finger and pointed at the old lady's body lying still on the floor. I marched over to her, confused as to what had scared Jaws, he had already seen so much death, it shouldn't of bothered him like that. Then, I flipped her body over to see a knife sticking solidly out of the woman's head. That wasn't the part that bothered me though. The most disturbing part was the Viper carved on the handle of the knife. I had seen that somewhere before, but I couldn't remember where.
