When Lani wandered into the mess-hall the next morning all the chatter seemed to have been diverted from the murder to Visiting Day. It was incredible that such an event should be ignored in this way. She had an inkling that her parents wouldn't come.

Nobody stared at her like usual that day. Possibly because she was wearing Abnegation grey and had her hair had been tied back. Or possibly because she just didn't let anyone know she was there. Deep down Lani still felt keeping for scabbing that piece of toast.

After finishing her meal Lani went for a bit of a walk before the families started arriving. She couldn't get over what had happened. Charis had been murdered  and no-one cared. Apart from her.

If her family actually came, what would they say? Her mother was the leader of Dauntless and quite strict.

Lani clenched her teeth. There'd still been no mention of the murder. None at all. She thought they were supposed to be selfless, caring…she cared and she was the one who committed the crime!

"Alright everyone." The voice of Jessica interrupted her thoughts. "Today is Visiting day as we all know so your families should be arriving in the Hall very soon."

No damn mention. What was wrong with these people? Anger was building up in her like a volcano ready to erupt.

All eyes turned to her. The heat was cooled down by an icy wind that enveloped Lani as she began to wonder if she'd said anything out loud.

"Oh my goodness. It's her!"

"She was the one to murder Charis wasn't she?"

"What murder?"

"Haven't you heard?"

"We can expect nothing less from someone who belongs in Dauntless."

Jessica's eyes narrowed. Whatever was going to happen next probably involved Lani. And it was not going to be good.

"If everyone can please head over to the Hall," Jessica ordered. "I'll have a few moments here." Her eyes hadn't left Lani for a second. She began to make her way over to Lani with her face straight and stern.

"Look, I-I…it wasn't me. I didn't." Lani knew she could never lie. That was one skill she could never master.

"Come with me," Jessica said sharply. She grabbed hold of Lani's arm with an iron grip.

As they passed the many teenagers streaming outside Lani spotted Lisa and Andrew in the midst of it all. They caught eye contact and stared at each other for a moment. But Lisa didn't smile.
