12. Twelve

"Thanks for coming to get me Connor," I smiled.

"No problem. Why the sudden call?"

"Louis cheated on me."

I felt a emptiness in me. I didn't know what I was going to do without him. I guess things would start to get better soon. That's what they say right?

I felt a tear stream down my face. I didn't even try to talk to Louis again. I felt like I made a mistake. I felt like I left behind a part of me back at the hotel.

"Are you alright?" Connor asked grabbing my hand.

"I'm fine," I said even though I was far from being fine.

I felt my phone buzz in my pocket it was Louis. I declined his call. There was no point in talking to him right now. I didn't want to say something that I would regret.

I closed my eyes and tried to sleep but thoughts of being with Louis kept rushing through my mind.

I walked down the aisle in a beautiful white gown. The top was tight and the bottom was fluffy, like a princess. I had a long veil streaming down my back. There he was standing at the altar waiting for me. I looked down at the beautiful engagement ring that was on my hand and at the promise ring that was on my other. It had been years since I got that ring back.

I don't remember what was said besides the preacher saying Louis could kiss me.

"You may now kiss the bride," He said.

Louis put his hands around my waist and kissed me passionately.

I opened my eyes and jumped forgetting where I was. That dream was so realistic. It felt like I was truly there. I must've been asleep the whole ride home. We were already back in my driveway.

"Thank you for the ride," I smiled, "I really appreciate it."

I pulled a 100 dollar bill out of my pocket and handed it to him, "For the gas."

"Keep it," he said placing the money back in my hand, "Let me help you with your bags."

We each grabbed as much as we could and sat them in my living room. We exchanged hugs and took our separate ways. I sat down on my couch and pulled out my phone. I had 4 missed calls from Louis. I cleared my phone history and carried my bags up to my room.

I pulled out a pack of cigarettes and stepped out onto my balcony to smoke. To the same place Louis and I spent many nights together. After smoking 3 cigarettes I decided to go back into my house. To go back inside and drink. I ran down to my kitchen and pulled out a bottle of Scotch.

I drank and drank and drank. I drank until the room was spinning. I had no recall of what had happened earlier in the day. I laid on the couch and passed out.

*Knock Knock Knock*

*Knock Knock Knock*

"Layne," someone shouted.

I had a pounding headache. The light coming in from the window was making it worse. There was another knock at the door. I wasn't getting up. All of a sudden the door opened up. There was a dark shadow standing there. He moved closer to me and I realized who it was. It was Louis.

I didn't say anything. I didn't know what to say. Apparently he didn't either because we sat in silence.

"Layne," he whispered, "It wasn't what you thought it was."

"That's what they all say," I stammered.

He grabbed my hand and I felt whole again. I felt like everything I ever needed was right here with me.

"Where is Michelle?" I asked. I didn't even think about her. I was too busy on trying to flee Doncaster I completely forgot about her.

"She is with my mom," He said, "Don't change the subject."

"Then why don't you explain to me what happened then," I said. I wasn't sure if I wanted to hear.

"After we got in that fight I called her because I didn't know what to do. She was a friend of mine. We'd been friends for years. We met up a couple of times because I hadn't seen her in forever because I had been so busy. We use to hang out at that lake, that's why I went there. She kissed me and I left. I didn't want anything to do with her in that way. She wasn't you. I went to dinner with her yesterday to tell her that I couldn't talk to her anymore. I didn't want her to jeopardize what we had."

I felt a tear running down my face. I was completely wrong about everything that had happened. I leaned in and kissed him. I wrapped my hands around his neck as we continued to kiss. He carried me up the stairs to my bedroom and shut the door. He traced his fingers along my body and kissed me harder and harder. We stripped each other down and made love into the night.

When I woke up the next morning. Louis was gone. I called him but his phone was still on my nightstand. I put on one of Louis' button down shirt that he had left at my house sometime. I heard his phone ring. I looked at who was calling. To no surprise it was Caroline Daniels. I was done with this shit.

"Hello," I said.

"Who is this and why do you have Lou's phone?"

"This is his girlfriend Layne," I said.

"Oh. It's you," She said in a bitchy tone.

"Yes bitch it is me. I suggest you don't call Louis again. I promise it won't be pretty honey."

I hung up the phone and walked downstairs. Louis had set up a table full of breakfast food. He had to be up all morning cooking.

I snuck up behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist, "I love you so much Louis."

"I'm so sorry I left without you," I said.

"I'll forget it ever happened," He smiled. He kissed me and led me over to the table. I sat down beside him.

We ate our breakfast and talked like we use to. Everything felt normal again.

"So Caroline called your phone," I said, "And I kind of answered."

He looked up from his food and looked at me with a look of disgust, "What did she want?"

"I'm not sure but I told her never to call you again," I said.

"Fine with me," He smiled.

"Layne," he said softly, "I need to ask you something."

"Go for it," I said.

"Well that night you left I was planning on something. I didn't want you to leave me so I bought you something."

He got down on one knee in front of me. He pulled a blue box out of his pocket, revealing a gorgeous diamond ring.

"Layne Frances Carter," He smiled, "Will you marry me?"

"Of course!" I said while pulling him into a hug.

"Yes yes yes yes. Yes I will marry you!" I said kissing him.

He slid the Tiffany ring on my finger and kissed me again. He cleaned off the table while I went upstairs to take a shower. I felt gross.

*Louis' POV*

I was so glad that things were starting to get back to normal. I didn't think I would be able to get her back that easily. I picked up the phone and dialed my mom.

"Hi mom," I said.

"Louis where are you?" She asked. "Lottie said you were back in London."

"It's a long story. Basically Layne and I broke up, she left Doncaster so I had to go get her."

"Well," She said laughing. "When are you coming to get Michelle?"

"Could she stay for a few days?" I asked. "I was thinking about taking Layne to New York for New Year's."

"New York?" She asked.

"Yeah. She told me she's always wanted to go there."

"I'll keep Michelle. Go spend some time with her," She said, "I have to go Louis. See you soon."

"I love you mom."

"I love you too."

I hung up the phone and walked into the office that was downstairs. I sat down at the desk and logged on to the computer. I needed to find somewhere nice for us to stay. I really hoped this all worked out.

I called up our personal Pilot and told him my plan. He changed his schedule around a bit to accommodate my needs. Everything was set up. We were spending New Year's in New York. New Year's eve is in three days. Layne and I would fly out tomorrow and spend the rest of our holiday in the Big Apple.

I walked upstairs where Layne had just finished getting ready. I didn't want to tell her the plan. I wanted to surprise her.

"Layne, guess what," I said.

"I planned us a trip for New Year's," I smiled.

"Awesome. Where are we going?"

"I can't tell you. It's a surprise. We leave tomorrow. It's going to be cold," I said.

"I'll pack now," she smiled.

She leaned into me and gave me a kiss. I pulled her into a warm hug as we parted ways. I needed to go pack back at my house.

Layne's POV

I was so excited for the trip Louis and I were taking. It would be our first real vacation together. I started to gather some clothes and shoved them into a bag. I was never good at packing. There was a nock at the door. I was expecting it to be Louis, but I was wrong. It was Connor.

"Hi," I said. "What are you doing here?"

"I was around. I just thought I would stop by for a few," He smiled.

He walked into my house and sat down on the couch. I sat down in the chair beside him. He pulled what looked like a cigarette out of his pocket. I stuck my hand out and asked for one. That's when I realized this wasn't a normal cigarette. It was weed.

"I can't do this," I said. "I'm not into that."

"It'll be fine. Just try it," he said sparking the end of the blunt.

I took a drag and the feeling was great. I'd never felt anything like it. It made all the stress in my life go away.

After about two hours of laying around and doing nothing, Connor left. I couldn't believe the things that I had done. I always said I was never going to be the person to do drugs. Boy was I wrong. I wasn't going to stop.

I pulled out my phone and texted Connor:

Thanks for coming over, I'm gonna need to meet up later tonight. I need some more. -Layne Carter

Sure thing. I'll come back over later. -Connor

I walked back upstairs to my room and finished my packing. It had taken what felt like forever. I sat down on my bed and called Leslie. I hadn't talked to her in a while.

"Hey Les," I said.

"Hey stranger," She said. "Merry Christmas. Thanks for calling."

"That's why I called you. You wouldn't believe the way my break has been. How has yours been?"

"It's been boring. I've just been with Elen since you haven't called."

"Sorry about that. I was in Doncaster with Lou," I said. I felt a smile cracking on my face.

"Oh really?"

"Yeah, but there is something I need to tell you."

"Oh god. Whenever you say that it is never anything good."

"Well. Things have been going great for us and he asked me to marry him."

"You haven't even been with him that long."

"I know Les but everything just feels so right. I know he is the one."

I continued talking to her for about an hour until I heard the knock at my door. It was Louis. I opened the door and we sat on the couch together and watched TV for a bit. I nestled my head into his shoulder as he wrapped his arms around me.

There was another knock at the door. I completely forgot about Connor coming over.

"I'm gonna step outside," I said.

I got up from the couch and met Connor outside. I didn't want Louis to know what was going on right now. I didn't know what he would think. Connor placed a little bag in my hand and walked back out to his car.

"Thanks," I shouted.

I walked back inside where Louis was standing with his arms crossed. He didn't know about Connor. In my defense, he never asked.

"Thanks for what?" He asked.

He walked over to me and opened up my hand. He took the bag out of my hand and threw it away. He didn't say a word to me. He just walked out the front door, leaving me standing alone.
