12. First Date

After the assembly I had all but ran into the house to tell my mom the news. She was so happy for me. Dad was sitting watching tv and he heard our excitement.

"So, is he going to come over for dinner then?" he yelled. I looked at my mom, and shrugged.

"Invite him over for tomorrow, I'll make a special dinner." My mom winked.

"Okay!" I said and ran to my room. I was so happy. I didn't want this day to end. I changed into my pj's and sat onto my bed.

'Hi Kae,' my phone had vibrated.

'Hi Jay,' I replied with a smiley face. I was so happy right now, I felt my cheeks flush. If anyone had seen me, they would have thought I was crazy.

'I'm glad that you said yes.' Justin said.

'Me too,' I giggled to myself.

We talked for the rest of the night, typical silly, stupid relationship talk that new couples do. I almost forgot to tell Justin about tomorrow.

'Can you come over tomorrow for dinner with my parents?' I asked just before I went to bed. I could picture it, him sitting across from me at the table, my dad giving him the 'dad' talk when I would leave the room. It made me giggle.

'Yeah, is your dad gonna kill me or something?' He said with a wink.

'No, at least I don't think...' I laughed.

'Well good, I don't want to die right after I landed the girl of my dreams.' He said, causing me to blush.

'Maybe you can just come over a little earlier?' I asked hoping he would say yes.

'My mom said that's fine.' Yay, I thought to myself. I get to spend tomorrow with my boyfriend. It felt so weird to be able to finally call him my boyfriend, but it was a good weird.

I had no trouble falling asleep that night. I had several dreams about prom, all of them ending with Justin and me alone. I wasn't scared this time, I was happy. I wanted to be with Justin. I woke up feeling even giddier then yesterday. I had a text from Justin.

'Good morning beautiful,' Jay said with a smiley face. It made me realize that none of this was a dream.

'Hi, I am so excited for you to come over for dinner. I don't care if I saw you yesterday. I want to see you everyday.' I knew it sounded corny and I laughed at myself for saying it, but it was how I felt at the moment. I hoped the feeling never went away.

'Me too,' after reading the message, I ran around my room looking for the perfect outfit.

After tearing up my room I finally found the outfit I was going to wear, I hopped in the shower and then changed. I put on short shorts and a white button up. It took me awhile to figure out how to wear my hair, but after a few experiments I decided on what to do. This was my hair was out of my face, but still flowing.

'I'll be over at two.' Justin texted. I bounced around my room with excitement, it was almost noon. I ran downstairs and told my mom what time Justin would arrive and then ran back upstairs.

'Okay!' I smiled and threw my phone. I danced around my room happily for a few minutes. I hoped today was perfect.

I looked at myself in the mirror and thought about how much I had changed. My style, my face, my body... everything. I was a different girl than I was in middle school. I really was the ugly duckling who turned into a swan. I dressed better and looked better. I couldn't even remember being the geeky nobody that everyone hated. I wanted the girls from middle school to see me now with Justin by my side. They had all been wrong, he cared about me and liked me for me.

It was almost two, so I went downstairs to tell my mom goodbye. She was in the kitchen making soup.

"Are you leaving honey?" She asked me as I approached the doorway.

"Yeah, I'm heading out. I'll be back later. I will probably end up staying later after dinner. I'll text you."

"Okay, talk to you later. Bye sweetie. Love you," she said giving me a big hug. I hugged back.

"Goodbye. Love you too," I said walking out the door. My mom was all about hugs and 'I love you's'.

'On my way cutie.' I texted Kae with a smile. I got in my car and sped off down the road, happy as can be. I pulled up in front of her house and tried to calm my nerves before I got out of the car. I know I have already met her parents, and I think they like me, but this is the first time coming over as Kaelee's boyfriend. I like the sound of that. I got out of the car and walked up to the front porch. I knocked on the door and almost immediately Kaelee answered.

"Hi Jay," She said with a huge smile plastered across her face.

"Hey," I said smoothly and then gave her my signature smile. She opened the door more and gestured for me to come in.

"You don't have to try to be cool in front of me. You already won me over." She giggled.

"I'm not trying, it's a natural thing," I smiled at her. She rolled her eyes at me and laughed again. "Someone's in a good mood."

"Well of course. You put me in this good mood," she smiled and blushed. I smiled at her cuteness and wrapped her in my arms. She wrapped her arms around my neck and hugged me back. I kissed her forehead and pulled out from the hug. I checked her out completely now and damn did she look fine.

A second later I saw her mom come downstairs. I liked her mom, she was always so perky with a smile on her face. She was a beautiful woman, Kaelee definitely took after her mother.

"Hi Justin," she said with a smile. "I hope you are hungry for cheeseburgers. Sorry it isn't anything fancy for you two lovebirds." She winked at Kaelee, who's eyes were wide.

"MOM!" She buried her face in her hands.

"That sounds amazing." I said smiling brilliantly. "How are you Mrs. Lowe?"

"I am good. Thank you for asking." She smiled. "Honey come down stairs and tell Justin hi." She had turned toward the stairs and was yelling and Kaelee's dad.

"Hello Justin!" He yelled from a room upstairs.

"Hello sir." I called back. I was nervous about seeing him and talking to him. Kaelee had said he would probably give me the 'dad' talk. I swallowed and looked at Kaelee. She laughed and shrugged it off.

"I've got to run off to the store, so you two behave yourselves. If you need anything your father is in the office." Then she was gone. As soon as the door shut, Kaelee turned to me and leaned forward kissing me softly.

"Well, what a pleasant surprise." I smiled. I grabbed her by the waist and kissed her again. I glanced up the stair way to make sure her dad didn't 'accidentally' walk in.

"Come on, we can watch some tv or something, maybe play a game in the living room?" She said smiling.

"Sure," I had hoped for something more private, but anything was really okay with me.

We ended up watching a movie together, it was an action film. I liked that I could watch these kinds of things with Kaelee rather than some stupid chick flick. That was all Hope would watch. Halfway through the film Kaelee leaned against my shoulder. I wrapped my arm around her and ran my fingers through her hair, it was extremely soft. I sneaked a peek at her and smiled to myself. She had her feet tucked up and her hand rested on my leg; with my right hand I took hers and locked our fingers together.

Suddenly, Kaelee sat up straight and leaned forward. I laughed, she was too into the movie.

"Oh god, no don't do it." Then. "Stupid." She leaned back and crossed her arms. I laughed even harder. She looked at me and frowned.

"Don't laugh at me." She pouted. "This is a serious matter."

"Sure it is," I said smiling. She hit me with a pillow and settled back into her previous position, snuggling up to me. As she did I could smell her perfume; I would never get over that scent.

The movie ended at the perfect time, Kaelee's mom got home from shopping and we had just turned the television off. Mr. Lowe had emerged from his office to help us all with groceries. We all took a bag and helped put them away.

"Thank you Justin." Her mother smiled. Mr. Lowe patted me on the back and disappeared upstairs again.

"We're gonna go for a walk mom." Kaelee smiled.

"Okay be careful. Take care of my baby Justin." She said jokingly.

"Always." Was my response. I took Kaelee's hand and let her lead me from the house. I heard the door open behind us and then I heard Kaelee's mom squeal.

"Gotcha!" She said, we turned around and saw her waiving her camera around triumphantly.

"Dear god mom," Kaelee sighed. "You are so embarrassing." Her mother winked and made a kissy face.

"You will thank me later for these memories."

(No not Justin, but this is what the picture that Kaelee's mom took kinda looks like)

We walked down the street hand in hand, talking, and laughing at each other. I loved moments like this.

"Just doing little things like this with you makes my day ten times better Kae." I said to her.

"I know. I love how we can do nothing and have such a good time." Kaelee said looking at me intently. Just then, she tripped and I quickly caught her.

"I told you I would catch you if you fall little klutz," I smiled. She leaned up and pecked me on the lips and smiled back. I righted her again and we kept walking. We decided to walk to the train tracks over by my house. We were passing my house and I could see the lights on in my living room.

"Oh great, there's Hope's house," Kaelee breathed hard.

"Don't worry about it. Nothing can ruin this now." I gave her a reassuring smile. She stepped closer and leaned her head on my shoulder.

After walking through a small thicket, we came to the train tracks. Over the summer this was where Ryan, Chaz and I would go to drink late at night. I didn't mention it to Kaelee though, I didn't know how she would react.

"It's always so pretty out here." Kaelee whispered.

"Yeah." I said.

"After I broke up with Conner I'd come here late at night. I would sometimes see you, Ryan and Chaz doing naughty things." She smiled slyly.

"Uhhh..." I said hesitantly.

"I wish you didn't do it, but I can't be mad about it... I wasn't really a part of your life." Kaelee shrugged.

"I'm sorry." I said, for the hundredth time.

"Justin, I swear it is okay. You don't have to keep apologizing!" She turned to face me and I put my hands on her waist.

"Kaelee I just want to make it up to you,"

"Then just shut up." She smiled widely and grabbed me by the shirt, pulling me down to her. She hadn't kissed me like this before. I wonder if being alone had brought out the more bold side of her. Her mouth was heavy on mine, her lips parted. Her hands clenched my shirt keeping me close to her. I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her body close to mine. We lost balance and tumbled over, but I managed to break her fall. We laughed a bit and then commenced again with the kissing. I rolled over and leaned over her in the grass. Her hair was sprawled out around her. She looked so god damn sexy, I wanted to continue but I didn't know if she was okay with it.

"What?" She said leaning against her elbows.

"I just I don't want to make you do anything you aren't comfortable with." I turned on my side and leaned back on one arm.

"We were just kissing... Honestly, after so long it was kind of overdue."

"Oh," I smiled to myself.

"I mean I've liked you for so long."

"Really?!" This was news to me.

"Yeah, since freshman year. I think that is why it upset me so much to know that you were dating Hope."

"I felt the same way when you were dating Conner. I ignored my feelings because I was dating Hope." I looked away and picked at the grass. Peeking at Kaelee I saw that she was blushing.

"Well, we should start heading back." Kaelee whispered. She kissed my cheek and stood up and started to walk back towards the houses. I got up and followed her. She fixed her hair and straightened her clothes.

We got back to the house and dinner was almost ready we washed up and helped set the table. We were sitting down waiting, when her father came in the room. I swallowed hard and waited for the 'talk'.
