15. Falling Into Place

"I can't believe it." Hope said. I sighed, she was always complaining. I didn't have to ask what was wrong because it was always the same thing, Kaelee.

"What?" I asked pretending to play dumb.

"Kaelee, I steal her boyfriend and she takes my sloppy seconds. How low." Yeah, I think to myself. She's the one who stooped so low. I roll my eyes.

"I know right. Guys think she is so pretty, but she wasn't always. I swear, I thought she was a dyke all throughout middle school. The only friends she had were boys, and she practically wore boy clothes." Oops, I had said too much. I didn't mean to, I had no problems with Kaelee. I had learned my lesson, I wasn't the mean girl anymore.

"Oh really? You guys went to middle school together?" Hope raised an eyebrow, "Have any old yearbooks?"

"Yeah, in my room."

"That's cool." Hope started to file her nails. "Do you think it would be cool if I spent the night?"

"Yeah." I said perkily.

"Awesome, we can look at old pictures and do each others nails." Hope said slyly, it made my skin crawl. What was she up to?

"Alright. I'll be at your house after I stop at home." We walked to her locker and then to mine. After the whole prom incident, I was her number one. It was a position a lot of girls would fight for.

"Okay see you then."

"You're the best Jodi." She pointed at me as we went our separate ways.

Everything was perfect. I couldn't say that it was solely because of Justin, even though he did make me pretty damn happy. It was just that I was actually enjoying myself more than I ever had. I had a bunch of cool friends. Anna, Scott, Ryan, Chaz, and Justin of course. The two girls from our prom group, Alexis and Sara, were becoming part of our little clique fast. School was perfect, I had gotten a 32 on my ACT and was ecstatic. Justin had taken me out as a treat that day, he was so sweet. Everyone had come out and we were all celebrating together.

"Lee, you could get into almost any school you want. You can get out of this shit hole!" Anna said laughing. She and Scott were holding hands, they were still going strong. I was happy for them and for myself.

"I could." I laughed. I hadn't told my parents yet, they weren't home from work. So instead I called Justin and he riled everyone up and we went to our spot, the smoothie shop.

"Yeah, and leave us all behind in this shitty town." Chaz said in mock sadness. I looked at him making a pouty face.

"Aww, too bad. Maybe when I am a rich and famous CEO of my own company I can visit on my private jet and we can all have fancy martinis together or something." I waved my hand carelessly. Everyone laughed.

"I can't believe junior year is almost over. High school is almost over." Alexis said.

"Okay guys lets not get all nostalgic," Justin said laughing softly. He ran his fingers through his hair and exhaled.

"Yeah." Ryan said. "Besides I need to take the ACT again, my mom is pissed about my score."

"What a twelve?" Chaz laughed.

"No.. I got an 18..." Ryan said then he sipped his smoothie and said nothing else on the matter. I was laughing really hard at this point. This is what I wanted to remember about high school, times like this where we were all together laughing and having a good time, not the difficult stuff and the fights.

"We should go see a movie tonight." Anna said. "I want to go do something. Maybe we can just go to the park or something, life's too short to go home on a Friday night." She stood and slammed her smoothie on the table. Everyone rolled their eyes, this was her speech every Friday. Usually, it worked.

"Sounds great!" Ryan said, happy that the subject had been changed. He grabbed Alexis by the waist. "How bout it babe?" He winked playfully. She laughed and pushed him away.

"I'm game," Chaz said.

"Me too!" I said jumping up. Anna didn't wait for any one else to reply, she was already looking up movie times on her phone.

After we had decided what we wanted to see and what time, we all went our separate ways. There was about an hour to kill for everyone to get ready. I walked out with Justin, holding his hand as we walked. He had been awfully quiet the entire time we hung out and I couldn't figure it out. I hadn't seen him like this ever, not while we had been dating at least, but I knew that something was wrong. I didn't say anything until we got into the car.

"Jay," I said softly, putting a hand on his shoulder. He turned to me and smiled a little, I could see sadness in his beautiful brown eyes. The sight made me want to cry.

"Yeah?" He asked in a gruff voice, as if talking hurt.

"What is wrong?" He moved around in his seat to look at me properly. I could feel my palms start to sweat, was it something I had done?

"Nothin's wrong." He said trying to smile, but I saw right through that.

"Seriously Justin. I know you better than that. We've been friends for too long for me to fall for that. I can tell when something is bothering my best friend... my boyfriend!" I emphasized boyfriend. He sighed, gripping the steering wheel. He looked out the windshield at nothing in particular.

"It's just..." He paused.

"What?" I hated this. The anticipation was killing me, I didn't know what to expect. I felt like my world could fall apart in seconds, it all depended on what Justin was going to say next.

"God..." He sighed. "It sounds stupid. But look, Kaelee I know we haven't been dating for very long. But I am afraid to lose you."

"Justin your not going to lose me. I'm with you and that's where I want to be." I let go of the breath I had been holding and took his hand.

"That's not what I mean. Your ACT score, you really can go anywhere you want. I... I can't. My score isn't BAD but I don't have those options. I mean I am extremely happy for you and I want you to go wherever you desire, I just can't face losing what I worked so hard to earn back." He spoke slowly, as if he were trying to hold back tears. I could just tell that my eyes were wide, and that they were watering.

"I don't want to lose what we have either, but Justin, we have an entire year. There is time, we don't have to think about what to do next until then. We've got two more summers together, at the least." I was trying to make him feel more optimistic about the whole thing, I didn't want to lose him either, and I wasn't planning on leaving him once we went away to college.

"A year isn't enough for me Kae. I meant what I said when I told you I love you."

"Jay, I-" My words turned into screams as someone pounded on Justin's window. We both jumped and Justin cursed under his breath.

"What the fuck Chaz!" He screamed. He swung the door open and hit Chaz in the leg, hard.

"Sorry dude. Would you mind giving me a ride. Ryan fucking left me." He said rubbing his leg. Justin sighed and looked over to me. I could tell that he wanted to keep talking, but he didn't really have a choice unless he was going to make Chaz walk to the movies.

"Okay dude." he said sighing. Chaz closed the driver's door and opened the back door. He hopped in and leaned forward his head in the space between our seats.

"So, whatcha talking about."

"Nothing," We both said at the same time. Justin started the car and looked out the windshield. I looked out my window.

"Shit, you guys aren't fighting are you?" Chaz asked seriously.

"No," We both said.

"We were just in the middle of a very interesting conversation." I said turning around. I raised my eyebrows suggestively then winked at Justin who had turned his head slightly to look at me. I saw a smirk cross his lips. That was what I had wanted to see.

"Ohhhh." Chaz said smiling and playfully nuzzling Justin's hair.

I seriously didn't want to stop talking to Kaelee about this. She was about to say something, and I couldn't be sure whether it was good or bad. What I wanted to do was kick Chaz in his balls and leave him on the side of the road. He and Ryan always had a way of ruining a moment. I shook my head, letting it go. But I wasn't forgetting about this conversation with Kaelee... we would talk about it again. We stopped at my house and hung out for awhile, just the three of us. I kept wishing that Chaz would make an excuse to go to the bathroom or call Sara, anything to get him out of here. I wanted to talk to Kaelee. I knew it wasn't going to happen anytime soon.

"Let's get ready to go." Kaelee said at last. The hour had dragged on, I had been tempted to tell Kaelee to forget about the movie and just stay with me so we could talk. But instead I said,

"Alright. But Chaz, Ryan is taking you home." He laughed and pushed me over.

"Okay dude, need a glove?" He laughed and ran upstairs before I could punch him. Kaelee shook her head and took my hand. Then we were off to the movies.
