7. Chapter 7

It was early morning when I woke up. Roman's arms were around me, keeping me safe. Even though he was sleeping, he still looked attentive and alert.

"Hey." I whispered to him. His eyes fluttered open and he smiled.

"Hey." He kissed me lightly.

"I should get going, my parents my be worried." I told him.

"Later." He mumbled, drawing me close to him and shutting his eyes.

"No, not later, Roman." I said to him. He smiled and kissed me lightly on the cheek.

"Okay, lets go then," He said, sliding from the bed and slipping on a shirt. I followed him and put on the same clothes as yesterday, we made the bed and walked into the living room.

"I'll walk you home, you know, common courtesy," He smirked at me. I rolled my eyes and opened the door, gesturing for him to walk out. The streets that had been busy just yesterday were abnormally quiet. No children played in the streets and the regular costumers that went about the market were gone. It was the middle of the summer it wasn't too cold to shut the shops. Roman must have noticed it too,

"It's too quiet... This isn't normal," He stated, his ears alert. He took hold of my hand and we continued down the street. He was right it was really quiet, no one was out side and curtains were drawn. Then a door creaked open and a woman poked her head out and I jumped.

"Alexa? What is going on?" Roman asked the old woman. As I got a better look at her I saw it was the old lady from the day before. She took us inside immediately.

As we entered the home she let out a sigh of relief.

“Did you see them?” She asked us. I shook my head, as I had no idea what she was talking about, but Roman nodded.

“See what?” I asked both of them.

“There were people coming down the street not far from us. Some were human others looked like big cats.” He explained to me. The lady, Alexa, nodded in agreement. How would he see that? He was no farther than me so I should have seen them too.

“How did you see them?” I asked.

“I could mostly hear them coming down the street and their shadows gave them away,” He replied.

“Come, I’m guessing you may not know what happened so I will explain it to you,” she said before moving over to the door slowly and locking it behind us. She blew out most of the candles around the house except for a small one away from all the windows. Then, she spoke, her voice crackling here and there that would give away that she was older.

“They came as soon as night fell, the vampires did anyways. They didn’t come alone though; they had spies in the city already, hiding. They were the cat like shadows you saw, Roman; they have allied themselves with the tiger and panther tribes. We all ran inside and locked our doors when they started killing civilians,” She spoke low and grave like she was ashamed.

A single tear formed in her eye and Roman patted her back and took her hand in his, calming Alexa down. My eyes got wide when I thought of the killings and my family.

“What happened to my parents? The King and Queen,” I stammered, heart racing.

“From what I’ve heard they have gotten to safety, they didn’t know where you were so they waited a little too long and your mother got wounded,” She paused for a moment, regaining her thoughts, “they are treating her now though, your mother. The king has sent troops out to fight them for now and we have to wait for the all clear.” Alexa replied. I winced a little; the reason why my mother got injured was because of me.

“If my mother is hurt I need to see her now.” I demanded, starting towards the door.

“How will you get in if they sealed the entrance, Callista? You will get hurt going out there and I won’t let that happen.” Roman said, getting in-between me and the door. I growled, going back to the main room and pacing back and forth furiously.

No matter how much I wanted to push past Roman and make a break for it, he was right. I had no way to get in to the castle without getting caught by the intruders. I wondered if Kiara and Audre were ok and if they were with their mates. I thought about if Xavier and Axel fought or defended the castle, or if they were relieved of duty to protect their mates. My train of thought was broken though when a familiar hand was placed on my shoulder.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay. Don’t get so worked up about this.” Roman cooed. That only made me angrier though.

“How can you say that when my friends and family could be getting tortured or attacked as we speak?” I shouted.  I lowered my tone though, as I saw he looked just about as worried as I was.

“I don’t know but we just need to try to believe that they are okay; otherwise we will go mad thinking about it.” He said scooping me up into his arms and holding me tightly next to him. I sighed and a few tears rolled down my face and onto his shirt.

“It will be okay, your father should have this cleared up in a few days, our King is smart, he will figure it out,” Alexa stated which did help lighten my mood a little. I nodded before she stood up. She guided us to some guest rooms and then told us to wake her if anything happens. I thanked her and then it was just Roman and I.

“Goodnight, Callista, if you need anything I will be right across the hall,” Roman said, but before he could leave I caught his arm with my hand. I didn’t want to sleep alone, not now anyways. I was scared of being without him.

“C-can I sleep with you tonight? I don’t want to sleep alone tonight,” I admitted to him. He smiled and nodded before he led me to his room.

His arm rested around my waist and his breaths were hot against my ear and neck. We laid in the dark for awhile, the sun due to come up soon, not saying anything.

“We will have to go to their homelands, Roman,” I whispered. I didn’t know if he heard me or not but I felt I needed to say it.

“I know, but I will protect you, Callista. I swear it on my life,” Roman whispered back. He turned my face so that I could see him and see the seriousness he had on his face before he pressed his lips to mine and kissed me.

“Are you scared?” I asked in a whisper.

“I am scared of you getting hurt, if that’s what you mean. If you mean if I’m scared of them, then no I’m not. I’ve seen this once before,” Roman replied. “What about you? Are you scared?”

“Yes, I’ve never seen a real vampire before and I’m scared for what will happen,” I answered. He squeezed my hand gently. My thoughts trailed to Jarien next; where was he? Was he looking for me? I dismissed the thought when Roman pulled me close to him and I buried my face in his shirt. He kissed the top of my head and as I started to drift off to sleep again I swore I heard him say,

“I will always protect my mate.”
