Echo -Complete-

Picture after picture I take and you're there. Not really but on the camera screen.
You're in my dreams. Your touch sends me away yet I've never met you.
Kiss me again. Make me feel alive in my reverie.
Who are you?
If I feel this way in my dreams, why would I ever wake up?

***This story is based off the book 'Elixir' by Hillary Duff. I will not/do not copy word for word nor do I steal the whole concept. If you've read that book and you see similarities, this is the reason why.

1. It Was A Man

Too many bodies.

Can’t breathe.

I don’t do well in crowded places.

I thoroughly move through the crowd and finally get to the terrace. Oh thank God for fresh air.

I take deep breath and slowly let it out. There are a few people out here makin’ out.

I take a seat on one of the many couches and look out on the Paris city line. Wow.

I lift my camera from around my neck and aim it out on the city lights.

“It’s called partying for a reason, Janae!” I hear Ravens voice ring through the terrace. I turn my head to see Raven strolling over to my couch with a guy in tow.

That’s Raven. Always believing in love. Trying to find her fairytale with any guy that’s up to her standards.

“I’m not feeling it Ray.”

“You haven’t been feeling it lately, but you’re always feeling that camera.”

Her boy toy sat down on the terrace couch and pulled her on his lap.

“That’s the only reason I’m here Ray. You just followed to party.”

“That’s the best part!”

Raven and I have known each other our whole lives so I shouldn’t be surprised. Both of our mothers went into birth during the same time so we’re basically twins.

She nuzzled her nose into the guy’s nose as she whispered in his ear. How awkward.

“Soooo what’s your name?” I asked.

He laughed, obviously sensing my mood. “Fredrick.”

His French accent was thick and almost incomprehensible but I’ve been here plenty of times to understand.

I held my hand out and shook his, “Janae.”

My crazy friend flipped her red waves over her shoulder before wrapping her arms around Fredrick.

“What happened to that guy you were dancing with earlier?” she asked.

I shrugged my shoulders, “Left him.”

She let out a heavy sigh before continuing her heated conversation with her guy.

“Thought I lost you” Jacques voice huffed as he plopped down on my other side.

Thought I lost you too…ugh.

“Sorry, it was really crowded in there, needed some fresh air.”

I turned my body to him so I could give him this explanation.

“Look, I don’t want to down your night and all but-“

“I understand” he smiled, “you’re just not feeling it.”

“Sorry. Any other girl would be lucky to spend the night with you.”

He leaned in and kissed my cheek. “Bye ma Cherie.”

He stood from the couch and left to go back inside.

“I think I’m gonna go.”

“Okay I’ll come with-“

“No, stay. I’ll be back at the hotel. Text me.”

She sent me a pointed look. She wasn’t going to text me.

I caught a taxi back to the hotel and settled into my pajamas. I ordered room service and got under the covers to enjoy some TV. Just then Raven texted me.

R: I’m at his penthouse. It has a view of the Eiffel tower! Oh and it’s somewhere on 5th street, thought you should know. Love you lots Jay!

I laughed at her text.

An hour later I began to doze off. I should stay up for Raven but she’s taking so long. I guess I should expect her in the morning.

My eyes shoot open at the news broadcast on the TV.

“Fire on fifth street.” I push my food tray off my lap to grab the remote and turn up the volume.

I had no idea what they were saying except for the title of the broadcast, but I caught some key words.

I dashed out of the hotel only with my pajamas on and ran a couple of blocks to Fifth Street.

Just like they said, huge fire.

There were firemen and flashing light everywhere. A fire hose spraying down the building.

People coming out of the building with children, coughing out the smoke.

“Raven!” I couldn’t find her through the numerous people. I turned all around looking for her. My black curls wrapping around my face, flowing with the wind.

“Janae!” Oh thank God.

Her arms wrapped around me once she got to me. “I was so worried” I breathed into her hair.

“We’re fine. The fire is on the top floor, we were on the second, and we’re fine.

As the scene settled everything became clearer. I was just glad Ray was okay.

I see the dying fire with the fire truck in front. Perfect view.

Of course, my camera is hanging from its strap. Totally unplanned.

“Getting the urge?” Raven teased. I rolled my eyes and disappeared behind my camera screen.

“I’m checking on Fredrick kay?” I nodded and went to take a picture of the truck

I centered the focus on the truck with flames in the background.

Though on my camera screen there was a figure but when I glanced over the camera there wasn’t.

Now here back home in Connecticut I’m uploading my pictures. I save all the pictures my on a ‘Paris’ file and roam through them. I keep returning to that one with the figure.

I zoom in and study the picture closely. The figure wasn’t that but a man. He seemed young. Early twenties or late teens. His head was hung and his jaw looked tense.

He wasn’t in uniform.

He had on a leather jacket with black jeans and a gray t shirt.

His thick black hair was messy, eyebrows scrunched and prominent cheek and jaw bones ticked.

His sadness slightly distracted me from his beauty.

I couldn’t take my eyes off him.
