Echo -Complete-

Picture after picture I take and you're there. Not really but on the camera screen.
You're in my dreams. Your touch sends me away yet I've never met you.
Kiss me again. Make me feel alive in my reverie.
Who are you?
If I feel this way in my dreams, why would I ever wake up?

***This story is based off the book 'Elixir' by Hillary Duff. I will not/do not copy word for word nor do I steal the whole concept. If you've read that book and you see similarities, this is the reason why.

12. Bliss

"We're done, okay?" I demanded. They all looked at me. "We're done. I can't do it, he can't do it" I said pointing at Mason. "I can't do this" I breathed and stood up from the chair.

I ran my fingers through my messy curls and let out a another labored breath.

"Sit girl" Margot ordered. "I'm not a dog!" I snapped, "and you can't make me stay here and see these girls die. They all look like me! That's disturbing, it bothers me. I need to leave, please."

"The CV are still out there" Zayn murmured.

"I don't care, I just want to go home."

"If you leave you do not receive the elixir."

"Margot" Zayn warned.

I sighed, with tears in my eyes and sat back down. I can't do it again.

"We all know how Jasmine dies don't we?" I hissed in a quiet voice. "We know Zayn plays the fucking piano and she sings. She belongs to a mob man but she--as everyone--is in love with Zayn. The mob guy finds out through one of his men who just so happens to look like Mason and he kills her. End of story. Now can we go?"

"Don't take death so lightly because you are next in line" Margot snapped.

"That's the point, I don't want to be."

"Gladly" she snakily replies and hands Zayn a stitched bag. He takes it with clammy hands and tucks it into his pocket.

"We can go" he says and stands up. I gladly join him and rush to his side. I don't want to hear the story of my own death, that's too far.

"I guess my work here is done, correct?" Zayn nodded, "Goodbye Margot."

She gave a dry wrinkly smile and grabbed the necklace from around her neck and yanked it off. Her eyes instantly loss their color and she collapsed on the couch. I gasped, my hand going to cover my gaped mouth. I looked at Zayn but his face was expressionless.

Mason's eyes were wide but he didn't say anything. If anything we all expected it.

Zayn led the way out and we followed through that small door.

"Where are we going" I whispered.

"we're not going anywhere."

I raised a brow of confusion. "What do you mean?" Mason asked.

"She was right, as long as you stay with me you're as good as dead. I can't have another life hanging over me."

"What are you trying to say?"

"I have to leave...somewhere away from you" he mumbled.

He looked at me with a face that said 'you know exactly why'.

What was the point in this whole journey if we were just gonna get separated? Was this his plan? And that's when it clicked.

"This was your idea all along."

He looked away from me, confirming my suspicions.

"You never wanted to elixir. You-you wanted to find a way out."

I was in disbelief. I reached into his pocket and pulled out the small stitched bag before he could even understand what I was doing.

"What's in here?" I asked, holding it away from him. "Jay" Mason whispered, trying to calm me down.

"Herbs" he answered.

"What for?"

"What's it for Zayn?!" My voice echoed, bouncing off the walls of parking garage.

"Shh" Mason hushed.

"I don't want to live anymore, okay!"

I flinched at his harsh words. He shrunk away with tears brimming in his eyes.

Oh please don't cry.

"I've lived too long, seen too many things, suffered too many hearts. I can't do it anymore."

I wasn't going to stand here and argue because the short time I've known this man I've seen his demons flash before his eyes.

I nodded, "If that's what you want" I croaked.

"Zayn" Mason spoke, his voice shaking. "Are you sure?"

Zayn nodded. His truth has been revealed and he just can't live with it anymore.

I took a few shaky breaths, with pressure building behind my eyes.

"So this is goodbye?" I asked.

He wearily nodded.

My lip trembled as I tried to hold back a sob. Mason knew I needed time so he went to Zayn and gave him a swift hug, "It was great knowing you man" he said. Zayn softly smiled and nodded in agreement.

Mason turned back to me and whispered, "I'll be around the corner" he said and left us alone.

"Is this the only way?" I asked. My voice was hoarse and I couldn't fight the tightness in my throat.

"I'm afraid so" he sighed and folded me in his arms. I held him tight around his waist while his arms were around my shoulders.

"You knew this whole time" I muffled against his chest.

"I'm sorry."

I tried to stay strong as I nodded against him but the sob that fell from inside me said otherwise.

I cried. I cried because no matter how tight I squeeze him he will always be loose in my grasp.

He pulled away and cupped my chin with his hand. "You'll be alright."

"How do you know that?"

"Because I know you."

I sent him a small smile, all that I could give him. He leaned down and pressed our lips together. Such a soft and hesitant kiss that meant the world to me.

"I'll miss you" I whispered against his lips.

"I already do" he countered.

He left one firm kiss to my forehead before pulling away. I gave him back his bag and engrained the caress we shared.

I went to my necklace--my iris charm necklace--and yanked it off, letting it pool into the palm of his hand.

He looked at me with wide eyes. The corner of my mouth lifted in an attempted smile.

"Bye" I whispered.

His hand tightened around the charm and he bit his lip. "Bye."

He walked a few steps backward before he turned and jogged away.

I stood there and admired him, everything about him.

I sighed with tears falling freely and turned away as well. Mason held me as I cried into his shoulder.

It hurt, more than anything.

The flight home was long and sad because Zayn just wasn't there but the dream I had lightened me...

"I'm not hurting you am I?" he asked in a hoarse voice.

He leaned down and kissed across my collarbone and up my neck as he gently moved his hips against mine.

I let out a small moan and instantly felt embarrassed, my face turning red.

"It's alright" he softly chuckled.

"Don't laugh at me" I giggled between gasps.

"Never" he teased.

...and then it was over.

It was mine and Zayn's first time. In that hotel room when Raven distracted Mason for three hours. That's how long we were tangled in the sheets, nearly three hours.

Pure bliss.

He's in my thoughts, my dreams.

That's all I need.

I know Zayn did what was best, basically killing himself to save my life. That's all I could ask of him.

I never got to say I loved him but with all my heart I did.

I do.

His decision was final and it brings peace to the both of us.

Without his doings this would be a never ending cycle.

Every girl, century after century would become of it, suffer the ending.

But he ended it...with me.

It's done. At least it won't go on and on for everyone to and echo.
