The Last Emerald

All Callista Ramirez wanted to do on her two week Thanksgiving break was sleep in and read a good book. Her twin sister Clara had other ideas. An accident on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day in the world, causes Clara to spend 2.9 million dollars on a diamond ring. Quickly she finds an ad for a search in Muzo, Colombia for the last emerald on Earth. The prize being 3 million dollars, Clara drags Callista and her friend Odessa all the way to Colombia for the search.

When they get there it’s anything but expected. Eli Wrie, the one who conducted the search, assigns his son, Easton to be their guide around town. Easton acts very strange around the girls, and it leaves Callista with a dreading feeling in her stomach. Odessa gets an overwhelming sense of déjà vu wherever she goes and has dreams of a mysterious stalker. But when they all finally get into the mines to search, Odessa’s dreams come true, and she realizes that everyone that they've met in Colombia has been lying.

2. Chapter Two:

The next morning didn’t get any better. Clara was still in bed at eleven o’clock even though she scheduled the plane to leave at noon from the airport that was thirty minutes away.

“Did you pack your toothbrush?” Carrie asked nervously over my shoulder. When we told her that we were flying to a different country she freaked out.

“Yes. And sweat shirts, jeans, capris, shorts, t-shirts, and pajamas. We’ll be fine Carrie.” I said soothingly, trying to jam everything that I needed for the week into only two suitcases.

Clara’s suitcases were already neatly packed and at the front door, and she had called mom and dad this morning.

As I dragged my full suitcases down the stairs I saw Odessa and Brennen walking up the side walk.

I opened the door and peeked my head out. “Morning guys!” I called out, pushing the door open more as they walked into the house, their suitcases in hand.

“Thanks for coming Brennen.” I said sincerely. If Clara hadn’t told mom and dad that there was a legal adult going with us, then they’d probably not let us go.

Brennen gave me a smile. “No problem. I’m all for helping a damsel in distress.” He said winking at me.

“Who’s in distress?” Clara called from at the top of the stairs. Somehow, she had managed to get ready in minutes and still look gorgeous.

She was sporting a neon orange hoodie and black sweatpants, her light blonde hair pulled back into a messy ponytail, and a matching orange headband. I, on the other hand, wore some navy blue sweatpants and a blue cardigan, not even bothering to tame my knotted brown hair.

Odessa still looked as wide awake as she did early this morning. “Are we leaving now?” She chirped as Carrie walked down the stairs.

“What am I going to do without you guys?” Carrie asked, pretending to wipe away a tear.

“Take some time for yourself, make some new friends, or go visit your family.” Clara suggested. Carrie shrugged.

“Take some time for myself it is then.” She replied, chuckling.

“The limo is here.” Brennen said, staring out the window. I picked up my bags and turned to Carrie.

“You all have your passports, right?” She asked. Everyone nodded.

“Good. Your father said that he made some calls so, you shouldn’t have to go through a hassle.” Carrie said, patting my shoulder.

“Well, let’s get this show on the road.” Odessa said, walking back out of the door.

“Bye Carrie!” I said, walking out behind Odessa.

“Bye sweetie! Don’t let Clara go shopping while you’re there!” Carrie called out behind me.

I giggled and walked out to the pearly white limo. The chauffer took mine and Odessa’s bags and put them in the trunk while we both climbed into the car.

The cool black leather touched my already chilly hands and sent goose bumps up and down my arms. Odessa scooted all the way to the very back and I sat next to her.

I pulled out my IPod and my knotted headphones from my pocket. I powered on my IPod and plugged in my headphones to it, sticking them in my ears as Clara and Brennen entered the limo.

Clara was laughing at something he said and I felt Odessa shaking with laughter as well.

I pressed play and instantly a flood of music filled my head. I closed my eyes as the limo pulled out of the drive way.

“Callie! Wake up!” I heard Clara yell into my ear. I woke up and saw my IPod in her hands.

“What the heck! Clara give it back!” I exclaimed.  She smiled.

“We’re at the airport. Get your butt out of the car.” She said, rolling her eyes and shoving my IPod in her pocket.

She jumped out and I reluctantly followed. I couldn’t see why I couldn’t just stay home with Carrie. Clara has Odessa and Brennen. She’ll be fine.

“Don’t even think about bailing on me now Callista May Ramirez.” She said firmly when we both were out of the limo.

The cool air hit me hard and I shivered as the chauffer handed me my luggage. “Have a nice trip.” He said warmly. I smiled weakly back at him before returning to my inner pity party.

“This is so exciting!” Odessa squealed in my ear, making me jump. Odessa was always one to encourage long trips into places that she’d never been.

“Yes. Exciting.” I said sarcastically. She chuckled.

“Hey, it’s your fault that you agreed to go.” Odessa said, smiling cheekily.

“She forced me to come. There were no choices.” I replied.

“There are always choices.” She said softly before walking over to Brennen who was trying to hassle my sister into letting him take a bathroom break before the flight. Apparently he refused to go to the bathroom on the plane.

I walked over to them, my bulging bags weighing me down.

“Come on Clara! It’ll only take five seconds.” Brennen whined. I snickered under my breath. If he thought that he could just sway my sister with that then he was sadly mistaken.

“Just go on the plane! It’s fine. We’ll be late if you go.” Clara responded firmly.

“Fine. Where’s the dang plane?” Brennen asked bitterly.

“We have to wait for the pilot to come and get us.” Clara responded smoothly, pulling my IPod out of her pocket and handing it to me.

Odessa edged her way towards me and leant close to my ear. “This’ll be fun with them arguing all the time.” She whispered, watching the next scene of why we had to wait in the parking lot unfold.

“We have the best siblings, don’t we?” I said sarcastically. We both laughed.

“But why?” Brennen exclaimed.

“Where else are we supposed to meet him?” Clara shot back.

“Oh, I don’t know the airport!” Brennen snapped.

“Whoa guys, cool your jets. I’m calling a draw. Put the guns away.” Odessa attempted to calm both of them down by stepping in between them.

“Clara, how about you try calling the pilot to see if Brennen has time to go in and use the restroom before he comes to get us. Brennen, how about you man up be patient.” Odessa reasoned.

“Ok, fine.” They both muttered, Clara pulling out her phone and dialing a few numbers before starting to talk.

“Good going Clara, you broke up WWIII!” I said laughing.

“Your sister is unbearable.” Brennen mumbled.

“I think you’re the first person to ever say that.” I laughed. He looked at me strangely.

“Are you sure?” He asked in disbelief. I nodded and he chuckled. Clara hung up the phone and glared at Brennen.

“You have five minutes before he gets here, so make it quick.” She snapped. Brennen saluted her before running into the airport.

“What’s your problem?” I asked smiling.

“He’s being annoying.” She responded, her lip curling up.

“Don’t worry. He’s like that 75% of the time.” Odessa said, inspecting her nails.

“Oh great.” Clara responded.

Ten minutes later and the pilot and Brennen had not returned.

Clara checked her watch for the fiftieth time in the last five minutes and scowled.

“I can’t believe it!” She groaned. My sister was a complete stickler for being on time. Actually, she liked being early most of the time.

“Calm down, they couldn’t have just left without us.” I said, patting her back. We were still camped out in the parking lot, sitting on our suitcases.

“Hey, Brennen just texted me, he said that there was a really long line, but he’ll be out here soon.” Odessa announced.

“Finally.” Clara said dramatically, throwing back her head.

Odessa and I both rolled our eyes. “Hey look, isn’t that the pilot?” I pointed out, as a man in a blue suit came off of the runway and towards our direction.

“It probably is.” Clara exclaimed, jumping up.

“And there’s Brennen.” Odessa said as the pilot approached us.

We all picked up our bags. “I’m assuming you are the Ramirez party?” He asked in a formal tone.

Clara nodded and pulled our passports out. “Do you need these? Or all we all set?” She asked.

“We’re all set. If you’ll follow me...” He trailed off, turning around and walking towards the silver fence that he came through. Brennen caught up with us and grabbed his bags.

“You got lucky.” I whispered to him.

He nodded and smiled. “I’ll live another day.”

We entered through the fence and the pilot locked it behind us. He then led us to the closest plane. It was quite large and when we walked up the steps I was pretty shocked.

There were two large leather couches on both sides and a huge flat screen TV above the door into the cockpit. Everyone dropped their stuff on the way in and Odessa and I dived onto one of the couches.

I slipped off my boots and curled up into a ball. Odessa reclined in her seat and I stretched out my feet to her footrest.

“I am not sitting next to him for seven hours guys. Not happening.” Clara demanded as she stomped over to us.

“There’s a pretty comfy spot on the floor?” I offered, grinning at her. She narrowed her eyes at me before going to go sit by Brennen on the other couch.

“Is there anything I can get you?” The pilot asked after we all settled in.

“Where’s the remote?” Brennen asked.

“Right here.” The pilot said, grabbing a black remote from the drawer next to the TV.

He tossed it lightly to Brennen and smiled.

“If you need anything I’ll be right in there. Please try to refrain from moving too much while we’re in the air. The Wi-Fi is available for use and the bathroom is in the very back of the plane. Also,  the room right before the bathroom is a snack bar. Feel free to help yourselves.” The pilot finished off, smiling at us all before going into the cockpit.

Brennen clicked on the TV and a college basketball game popped on.

“No. We are not watching this.” Clara snapped, reaching for the remote as Brennen settled in his reclined chair.

“Yes we are!” Brennen exclaimed, pulling the remote out of her reach.

“But I brought my Apple TV so we could watch Netflix…” Clara trailed off, pulling out the small black Apple TV.

“Fine. But I get to choose what we watch!” Brennen declared as Clara got up and hooked up the Apple TV.

“As long as it’s on my list.” Clara negotiated, coming back to the couch and tossing the small silver remote at Brennen.

It popped on seconds later and Brennen clicked onto Netflix. Once he saw his choices, he wasn’t very happy. “I am not watching Mean Girls 2!” He proclaimed as Clara showed him her famous pouting face.

“But why?” She whined.

“Because it’s a cliché chick flick.” Brennen replied in a monotone voice.

“And how would you know?” Odessa asked, grinning. Brennen blushed.

“Because aren’t all movies with that cover on them automatically cliché?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.

“Nice cover.” I replied, hooking my IPod up to the free Wi-Fi and going onto ITunes to get some more music for the long ride.

“No! And it’s not cliché!” Clara protested, getting on her knees and reaching for the remote.

“I bet you that it’s cliché.” Brennen said as she pulled the remote out of his hands and pressed play.

“It is not!” Clara shot back as the opening credits played across the screen.

“See that girl there? She’s the most popular girl in school and she’s rich. Those are her groupies.” Brennen said, pointing to the cover of the movie.

“So, that’s pretty obvious.” Clara snapped, sitting back in her chair and sighing.

“It’s pretty obvious that this movie su-“

“Shut up!”

The two never made it to the end of the movie. Two hours later and Clara was sleeping peacefully on Brennen’s shoulder, and Brennen was snoring into her hair.

“Well that was kind of unexpected…” I began, looking at the two of them. Odessa shared my amused expression.

“That was exactly what I was thinking.” She said. “Do you want to go to the snack bar with me?”

I nodded and we both stood up silently, tiptoeing into the other room and shutting the door behind us.

“Hello ladies!” A voice suddenly boomed behind us.

We whirled around to see a man about the pilot’s age waiting behind a blue counter.

“Hi.” Odessa said politely. I was more focused on what he had behind him. A wall filled with food beckoned to me.

“Would you girls care for some lunch? I’ve got nachos.” The man said smiling cheekily at us.

“Nachos please!” Odessa and I said at the same time. He laughed.

“Nachos it is then!” Was all he replied before pulling out two baskets of chip goodness and setting them before us.

“Thanks.” I muttered, grabbing my nachos and going back into the main room where Clara and Brennen were both stretching out.

“Hey Callie.” Clara mumbled, while Brennen sprung up, investigating my nachos.

“I better make sure that these are safe to eat.” He said before grabbing a chip and popping it into his mouth, chewing noisily.

“Are you going to call the creator of that ad or whatever?” I asked, while batting Brennen’s hand away from taking another chip.

“Sure, I’ll call him right now.” Clara said, pulling out her phone and typing numbers in it before holding it to her ear.

She walked over to the corner of the room and turned her back to us.

“Go get your own!” I exclaimed as Brennen stole another chip.

“If I absolutely have to.” Brennen complained, slinking off into the snack room. I sat down on the couch and Odessa sat next to me.

“If anything, this trip will be fun. You know, if there is no such thing as the ‘last emerald’.” Odessa mused. I nodded.

“I just hope, for Clara’s sake that there is a search. Even if we don’t find it.” I replied.

I glanced at her out of the corner of my eye and I sighed. “Me too.” She said glumly.
