Rejection (A Drapple Fanfic)

Broken-hearted and alone, Draco has been turned down by the girl he asked to the Yule Ball. He turns to apple for comfort, and finds everything he ever hoped for from a true love, however, he doesn't know how people will react to his new relationship...

12. Never forget

As he sat in the Great Hall with his parents after the war, Draco looked around him, and saw the pain in peoples eyes at the loss of their loved ones. Much of the castle had been reduced to rubble. The cuts and bruises on everyone's bodies were nothing compared to the regret, sorrow and bittersweet relief that engulfed them.

Strangely, Draco had a sense of connection with the classmates that had been so distant, as though they all went through this, and came out alive, together. They were a team.

He thought back to when everything really began, the moment that meant Voldemort had been able to return. When Potter had won the Triwizard tournament. Draco had changed so much since that year; he was a naive boy back then, but now he had seen such horrifying things that he would never be the same person again. The person he was when he first met Apple.

Draco hadn't been back to the place she was buried since the return of the Dark Lord, as he had had more pressing matters to focus on. but now, as he felt the weight of Voldemort's rule lift off him, he could hardly wait to go and see what had  become of her grave.

He excused himself, and hurried outside, which was made faster by the gaping holes in most walls. He had to weave around debris and hollow pits to get to the forbidden forest, so he came from a slightly different angle than usual, and couldn't find the right spot.

He walked along the line of trees for a minute or so, but he still couldn't find the stone with the word "Apple" engraved in it. Had it been destroyed? He begun to worry, biting his nails anxiously.

Just then, something hit him on the head, then bounced to the ground. Draco looked down, and saw, to his surprise, there was a smooth green apple on the ground. It couldn't be her though... Could it? He bent down to pick the fruit up, noticing a small bruise where it had hit the mud.

"Hello?" he whispered, feeling slightly foolish. It had been so long since he had spoken to an apple. He had stayed completely clear of apples, and in fact all fruit. The apple didn't reply, but when Draco looked up to see where it had come from, a huge smile of understanding broke out of his face.

Just above him, a stone engraved with "Apple" was wedged between the branches of a young apple tree.
