Rejection (A Drapple Fanfic)

Broken-hearted and alone, Draco has been turned down by the girl he asked to the Yule Ball. He turns to apple for comfort, and finds everything he ever hoped for from a true love, however, he doesn't know how people will react to his new relationship...

8. Dispair

"What are you doing?" Draco hissed menacingly. "What the- HOW DARE YOU!" He shrieked, not caring whether he woke anyone. "WHERE DID YOU GET THAT APPLE?" Goyle was still silent.

"It..." Goyle whispered, the single syllable catching in his throat, "It... screamed." Eyes wide in horror, Draco batted the core out of his friend's hand before slapping him hard across the face. Goyle snapped out of the trance, and, realising that he'd done something wrong, he scampered up the stairs out of harm's way.

Draco dropped to his knees and wept, cursing himself for being so thoughtless. He should have known that, without his protection and care, Apple was bound to get into trouble.

Just leave. His last words to his beloved. How could he ever forgive himself.

"Draco?" a hoarse voice rang out across the room. His heart lifted with hope. Could it be Apple, alive and safe after all?

"Apple?" He croaked, searching for the source of the voice. Then out of the shadows, a round and distinctly fruit-like figure appeared. To his dismay, it was not Apple, but that sly creature, Adam. His stature, which was once haughty and proud, conveyed deep regret. He was clearly ashamed. Draco expected to find himself fill with rage, yet there was just an empty hole. Just sadness.

"What happened?" Draco whispered. Adam struggled to speak, gasping for air like he was drowning.

"That... That monster, came in unexpectedly while she was on the table, looking for a new hiding place... So she froze, so he wouldn't see an apple moving... He picked her up and..." he lapsed into silence. Draco didn't believe what he was hearing. Adam must have made a mistake. She wasn't dead. She couldn't be.

His eyes filled with tears, and he tried to scream, but only a pained gargle came out of his mouth. Through the salty blur, he noticed Adam shuffle away, coming back into view a moment later pushing something along. Draco blinked furiously to clear his sight, and saw that Apple's core lay on the floor in front of him. He picked it up and cradled it in his hands. Tears flowing, he held the core close to his heart, but it didn't comfort him, for his heart was broken.

To his anger and frustration, Draco realised that Adam wasn't crying.

"What's wrong with you?" he breathed. "Why aren't you more upset?" Adam sighed a sigh burdened with sorrow.

"When you are an apple, things like this... They aren't rare. We have a short life span, and we either are eaten, or we rot away. Apple, although she was barely six months old, was quite mature in apple years. I've had family and friends who didn't make it a week on the tree. I've had to learn to accept it..." Adam took a deep breath. "I'm just grateful that she lived this long." You heartless monster, Draco thought, moving on already, just minutes after...

Unable to think any more, Draco sunk onto the floor and cried himself to sleep.
