Safe And Sound (Triquel to Red)

"Elizabeth Ashton was more that just a girl to me. She was my best friend, she was the love of my life, she was my light. Since the day I met her when we were 5 years old there hasn't been a single day that I didn't love her. Without her, I wouldn't be the man I am today. She taught me so many things. She taught me to never give up on myself and to never let anyone tell me who I am, who I want to be. She taught me to believe in myself even when no one else did. Through the 15 years that I knew her, just the thought of her made me smile. Now I can't help but look back on all of the memories we made. The pillow fights, the sleep overs, the ghost stories. She made me happier than anyone else ever could. She put a smile on my face even when I was on the verge of tears and she always knew what to say. So much of the world knows Elizabeth Ashton as the girl who broke free from her past and created a future...

57. I'll Watch Over You

***Beth's POV***

I woke up the next morning to find myself in Liam's bedroom. I looked around for a moment and smiled. Slowly, I slipped off the edge of the bed, careful not to wake Liam who was sleeping soundly. I shuffled over to my bag which was placed right next to Liam's and pulled out a pair of navy blue sweats. After slipping them on I walked out of his room and downstairs. I could hear low talking in the kitchen and I walked in and saw Ruth and Liam's mum.

"Beth!" Liam's mum smiled, getting up and pulling me into a hug.

"Hey, sorry I wasn't awake last night to say hi." I told them.

"We understand. Don't worry about it. I'd be tired too if I were stuck in a car with Liam for six hours." Ruth told me.

"It wasn't Liam. I was just tired." I shrugged, sitting down next to Ruth. "So I assume Nicola isn't here yet?"

"No. She's bringing her boyfriend through." Ruth told me.

"Boyfriend. Well, I can't wait to meet him." I smiled.

"I've met him before. He's kind of an asshole when it comes to Liam." Ruth told me.

I raised my eyebrows. "Really? How so?"

"He thinks that just because Liam is famous and makes a lot of money that he's some stuck up rich kid." She told me.

"Liam is anything but that. He's not stuck up at all and sure, he makes a lot of money but he earned it. " I said.

It was then Liam walked into the kitchen, a smile on his face. "Well I'm glad you think that."

We heard the front door open.

"Mum! Dad! Whoever else is here!" I heard Nicola yell.

"In the kitchen!" Liam's mum called.

Moments later Nicola walked into the kitchen with a guy whom I assumed was her boyfriend behind her. I got up and hugged her, as did Liam and his mum.

"So, this is my boyfriend Chris. Chris, you've already met Ruth, this is my mum. And this is my little brother Liam and my soon to be little sister Elizabeth but everyone calls her Beth." Nicola smiled.

Chris looked at us for a moment. "Its nice to meet you all."

"Well we're going to put our stuff upstairs. We'll be right back." Nicola smiled.

As soon as they left the kitchen Liam spoke.

"I already don't like him." Liam muttered.

"Yeah well he doesn't feel too good about you either." I told him.

"Why?" He asked.

"I'm sure you can guess why." I said.

"Well I guess as long as he doesn't hurt Nic I'll tolerate him." Liam huffed.

"Good." I smiled.

A few moments later Nicola and Chris walked back into the kitchen and took seats at the counter.

"So Chris, what do you do?" Liam's mum asked.

"I'm a defense attorney." He told her.

"How did you two meet?" I asked.

"We go to the Uni together." Nicola told me.

"So, I heard you two are engaged. How long have you two been together?" Chris asked Liam and I.

"Well we've been best friends for 18 years. Dating for six." Liam told him.

"18 years? Wow. So you two went to school together?" He asked.

I nodded. "Since the first day of primary school."

"I'll have to tell you about how Liam asked her to marry him. It was the cutest thing ever." Nicola gushed.

We all talked for a while before Liam and I went upstairs to get dressed.

"I think you should give him a chance." I told Liam, slipping my shirt on.

"Why. I could see the way he was smirking when I told him we'd been dating for six years." Liam huffed, slipping his white converse on.

"I'm not saying love him like a brother. I'm just saying give him a chance. Show him you're not the guy he thinks you are." I told him.

Liam sighed and stood up, giving me a small kiss. "I'll give him a chance if you insist."

I smiled. "Thank you."

He and I walked downstairs and found Ruth and Liam's mum talking in the kitchen.

"Beth and I are going to go out. We'll be back later." Liam told them.

"Alright. Have fun." Liam's mum smiled.

Liam and I walked outside and got into his car.

"We need to stop by my old house. I forgot something there last time we were here." I told Liam.

"Alright." He replied.

As we began the drive to my house I looked out the window at the familiar houses. Finally when we reached my house and i hopped out of the car.

"Want me to come?" He asked.

I shook my head. "I should only be a minute."

I walked up the pathway and made my way up the stairs. I pushed open the door and looked around. Not much had changed since I was last here. I made my way up the steps, my footsteps echoing through the empty house. I reached my bedroom door and pushed it open. I grabbed the item that I had forgotten off of my desk and was about to walk back downstairs when I heard a dripping sound. It took me a while before I found the source of the drip. In my mum's library the window was slightly open and melted snow was seeping in. I pulled the window closed tightly and looked around the room for a moment.

I hadn't been in here in years. Books lined the walls and a rocking chair sat in the corner. I ran a finger along once shelf and picked up a trail of dust. My finger landed on a book, a book that my mum would always read to me when I was younger. Its called I'll Watch Over You. I smiled and slid the book out of its place on the shelf and opened to the first page. As I slowly flipped though the pages  I couldn't help but smile at the memories of her reading it to me. As I turned to another page, page 11, I saw that a little envelope was slipped into the spine of the book. I furrowed my eyebrows and picked it up. The familiar lavender colored stationary had belonged to my mum. I turned the envelope over and saw my name written on the front.

I looked at the envelope and opened it. I took out a letter and my heart almost stopped when I saw her perfect, cursive handwriting all over the page.

My dear Elizabeth,

By now I am most likely in another world, a better place. It is time you knew the truth. A few years into my marriage to your father he became violent and abusive. It had been going on for years, he just never wanted you to know about it. Finally when I tried to put a stop to it he threatened to kill me. I was so afraid, so disturbed by his threat. I never wanted you to find out about it in fear of him hurting you. A few days ago he accused me of telling someone and now I am afraid he may be planning my death. Elizabeth, no matter what happens to me, I will always love you. You are my baby, my daughter and nothing will ever change that. When you get this I want you to leave this house, I cannot bear the thought of him hurting you. I tucked it away in this book in hopes that you would read it.

Now is the time to tell you things I had hoped to tell you in the future. Lets start out with Liam. I know eventually you two will fall for each other. When I look at you and Liam I can see love in your eyes. Years from now I hope to be looking down on you as you say 'I do' to him. I know you say you hate him because he left you but that boy has loved you from day one. Give him a chance. If ever anything goes wrong between you two you can talk to me and I'll listen. I'll always be here. I love you Elizabeth and nothing will ever change that.

All my love,

As I read it over and over again I cannot stop the tears in my eyes. He had killed her. She wasn't in a car accident. It wasn't an accident. And worse, before me, she was his punching bag. I could feel the hot tears slip down my cheeks.

"Beth?!" I heard Liam call.

I couldn't respond. I was choking back screams. He had killed her.

"Beth where are you?!" He called again.

I still couldn't respond. I heard his footsteps in the hallway and soon he appeared at the door. He immediately rushed to my side as soon as he saw the tears.

"What happened?" He whispered, taking me into his arms.

I buried my head into his shoulder and cried even harder.

"Beth, babe, I need you to tell me whats wrong." He whispered.

I sniffed and handed him the letter that I had found. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I watched his facial expression change as he read it.

"H-he killed her Liam. He killed my mum." I choked out.

I could see the tears forming in his eyes. He kissed my shoulder and hugged me tightly. He pulled me into his lap and held me close to him. No words were spoken, he just let the tears fall. Every once in a while he would kiss my shoulder or forehead to let me know that he cared.

"You don't have to sit here with me." I sniffed quietly.

"I'm not leaving you. Not when you need someone." He whispered. "I'll never leave you."

For what felt like forever we just sat there. I would stare out the window and watch the white flakes fall in my backyard.

"He'll get what he deserves." Liam whispered after a while.

"How do you know that?" I mumbled.

"Its called karma. You know who told me that?" He asked.

"You." He told me.

I sniffed. "Hey Liam?"

"I love you."

"I love you too." He whispered.
