10. Heart Attack

“Good afternoon, how may I direct your call?”

The holidays were droning on.

My mother’s idea of making Kameron and I come into work was to sit and answer phone calls. Which was alright because Kam sat sketching prom dress designs for me while I answered the phone and texted friends.

“Have you called Harry yet?” she asked as I transferred a call to an assistants office.

“No,” I responded, hitting my forehead with my hand. “I forgot to last night. I didn’t know if it was too late or not.”

Kam rolled her eyes. “I’m sure he wouldn’t have cared.”

I smirked, not sure if she was right or not.

“Call him now,” she suggested.

I felt my cheeks blush but I couldn’t think of a reason not to. Luckily, a man holding a brown paper wrapped package came into the shop, saving me from Kam.

“Hi,” I said, a smile automatically coming to my face for this customer.

“Hi,” he responded, placing the package lightly on my desk. “I’m looking for Courtney Williams.” He read my name off a small card before looking at me.

“Uh- that’s me. What can I do for you?”

“This package is supposed to be given to Courtney Williams at Williams Fashion Boutique. It is from an H.s.” The boy quickly handed me the card before smiling, waving and walking out the door.

“What the f-“ Kam began before my mother’s heels clicked into the from office.

“What’s that?” she asked curiously. “Did you order an umbrella? We have plenty at home!”

“No, Courtney just got some package from Harry Styles.”

As Kam said his name it sent goose bumps down my arms. My mother’s eyebrows furrowed as she glanced at me. “Who’s Harry Styles?”

I covered Kam’s mouth so she couldn’t talk anymore. “A boy I met in Vancouver.”

“And he sent flowers to England?” Now my mother seemed very confused.

“No, he lives in England,” Kam explained, digging her nails into my hand until I was forced to let go. “He’s in a band and is known internationally.”

“Ooooh, a superstar!” My mother said, turning her face to me and winking. “Where did you meet him?”

As Kam launched into my embarrassing story about fainting onstage at the concert, I carefully unwrapped the parcel.

To my embarrassment and much to Kameron’s delight there stood a vase full of dahlias in all sorts of colours.

“Oh my goodness,” my mother exclaimed, her voice cracking in shock at the sight. “That boy sent you those?”

“Courtney, they’re gorgeous!”

“They must have the wrong person,” I reasoned, my eyes never leaving the flowers.

“No way!” Kam exclaimed, holding the small piece of card in her hand. “This note is hand written. He wrote it Courtney! Look at the way he signed his name.”

I glanced at the small card, which looked to be about the size of a business card and saw the quick scrawl and the neat but also quick sign of his initials.

I gave it back to Kam, who couldn’t stop staring at it, then glanced at my mum who was looking at me funny.

“What?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. My mother opened her mouth to say something but was cut off by the trill of the phone.

“You’d better answer that,” she said with a laugh.

“Good afternoon, how may I direct your call?”

A deep voice answered. “I’m looking for Courtney Williams.”

“Uh, I’m sorry?” Who in the world would be calling for me? Out of the corner of my eye, I saw mum and Kam turn towards me, their interest peaking.

I could hear the falter in his voice as he continued, it sounding somewhat familiar. “Courtney Williams? Does she work there? Auburn hair, green eyes, about 5”6, she always has some kind of remark,-“

“Yes” I interrupted. “This is Courtney speaking. But who may I ask is this?”

There was a laugh before he spoke again. “Sorry, Courtney, I didn’t recognize your voice there. It’s Harry.

Suddenly my cheeks flamed up and my breathe caught in my throat. How in the world did he find me? How did he know I would be here?

“How-?” I could barely get any words out.

“When you didn’t answer your cell phone I became curious. It’s very easy to Google people with a first and last name. So I found the shop, sent flowers and decided to phone and see how you were doing.”

“Well, I’m…. well, y’anno – the usual I suppose.”

“I’ve been wanting to talk to you for the past couple of days,” Harry confessed. “But I’ve been busy with family.”

“That’s alright,” I responded, my voice coming back gradually. “I’ve been busy too.”

“What have you been doing?” he inquired, his tone curious and calm.

He got me. I had lied, I hadn’t been up to anything other than lounging around home and trying to get used to the time difference. I had been lazy around the house with Kameron.

“Oh, you know, just working. Trying to pass the time until the holidays finally come around.”

“Sounds like you have been busy,” he teased. “Before I let you get back to work, would I be alright if I stopped by sometime? I mean if you’re not terribly busy.”

I looked over at my mother and Kam, who were whispering together. “Sure, Harry, stop by anytime you like.”

“Awesome,” I could hear the smile in his voice.

“Do you need the address?”

“No, I think I’ve got it. Anyways, I’ve got to go, I’ll see you soon Courtney.”

“Bye!” I said quick before hanging up the phone.
