35. 5 years earlier- Fire

I looked at them with apologetic eyes as I ran towards the house. The monsters had entered the house already but I dodged them all as I ran up the stairs. The monsters had got angry about not being able to find us.

“I thought you said they would be in here!” I heard one say as I burst into the bedroom and grabbed what I wanted a small photograph of my sister it didn’t seem like much but with her gone it was all I had left. I was about to leave when I heard one of the monsters shouting orders.

“If we can’t drag them out we’ll smoke them out,” the monster shouted and got a growled reply, “Light the building up.” I suddenly realised what he meant they were going to set the house on fire. I stood up and headed for the door but before I made it to the stairs a bottle of gasoline flew up the stairs and caught fire the moment it hit the floor. I screamed and ran backwards shutting the door to the bedroom I shoved the quilt towards the door to block the smoke.

“Anyone here!” one of the monsters yelled up the stairs but I kept my mouth shut. The flames licked at the door and no matter how hard I tried the smoke was still getting through. I was terrified the smoke was clogging up my lungs and causing me to cough and splutter as it swirled around the room like fog. The fire crackled loudly as I sat there shivering the fire was so hot it was searing my skin without breaking through the door. Suddenly the fire burned all the way through the door and started to set the bedroom alight.

“Check the rooms!” the monster shouted but I couldn’t run if I tried my eyes fluttered and my knees wobbled as I collapsed to the floor nearly unconscious lying there blinking at the door as a shadow walked in. The shadow scanned the room and settled his eyes on me he saw I was barely breathing but instead of calling for help he simply walked over picked me up and carried me to the window. Opening the window he lined me up with the trampoline and got ready to drop me. Before he did though he reached down and his lips found mine in the flicker of the flames and I kissed him back. Immediately I knew that it was a stage two monster but even better it wasn’t any old stage two it was Lucas.

“Are there any there Lucas,” the monster called up the stairs as he glanced out of the window then he dropped me. I landed with a bump on the trampoline and the others rushed to grab me but over the noise and the flames I could still hear Lucas call out.

“There wasn’t anyone there I checked every room but nothing.” That was when it dawned on me Lucas had just saved my life. Which meant only two things that Lucas could still hear me and that he still cared and had a heart. Happy that I had worked it out I gave up and went unconscious.
