17. The Lake

The Lake was cold as ice when Cara jumped in. The moment her body hit the icy water she regretted agreeing to do this. 'Why oh why did I say yes' Cara thought to herself as she dived deeper and deeper into the murky lake. The further down she went the more she wondered as to if the mermaid was real. 'What if the gatekeeper had been lying and there was no mermaid' Cara thought as she neared the bottom of the lake.

She was just about to give up when something scaly brushed against her leg. Cara jumped backwards and would have let out a scream if she hadn't have been underwater. Glancing around frantically for the source of her fright Cara's eyes settled upon a long green tale. It was connected to the top half of a human girl with bright red hair and was coming towards Cara.

Cara's brain told her to run but she didn't move instead she staid perfectly still floating underneath the water as this strange creature came closer and closer. Cara couldn't believe her eyes; there swimming in front of her in the glistening water of the lake was a mermaid.

Cara thrashed around trying to scream without opening her mouth but the mermaid didn't care. All she did was grasp Cara's thrashing wrist and pull her deeper into the water. Cara continued struggling at first but after a while of being pulled by the mermaid she gave up and let herself be dragged.

After what felt like forever they reached an opening in the sea bed. Pushing through it the mermaid dragged Cara through the hole and up into a massive room with a pool in the middle. Cara climbed out of the pool happy to be able to breath.
