16. Escape

The night was blissfully cold, soothing Dal's anger and leaving her feeling calm. This would how her parents; she wasn't a little kid anymore. They never included her on anything, just springing the decision upon her and not giving her another option. Now, how would they feel about her decision to leave?

She started to walk, her footsteps solitary in the midnight hours. As she walked, she thought about where she might go. Could she risk Mr Wright's house? No, he would tell her parents. Could she go to a friend's? Again, they would just tell her parents. It looked like she would have to find her own place. Instinct told her to go to the park, so she immediately avoided that option; her parents would probably have the same instinct.

Instead, she turned down a side street, twisting through the maze if alleys before she reached a small cluster of houses. Would one if those residents give her a place to stay? Dal looked carefully at them. No, they wouldn't welcome a random girl who knocked I their door at midnight. She needed to keep thinking, where?

Around the corner, she spotted a small store. But her parents used it, meaning she was too close to home still. She would keep walking until she was at least somewhere shed never seen before, then think again.

Half and hour later, Dal ended up at the gate to a farmer's field. She was completely exhausted and emotionally drained. It looked like she would just have to sleep on a rock under the stars that night. Unpacking her sleeping bag, she spread it out over a slab of rock in the corner of the field. Climbing into it, she lay there, eyes wide open, just thinking.

She didnt sleep at all that night.
