107. Piggy Backs And Glares

“C’mon Rosie. Are you nearly ready?” I’m just applying a little bit of makeup to my eyes when Niall sticks his head round the door.

“Yeah, I’ll be ready in a second.”

“You don’t need any of that; you’re already pretty without it.”

“As my boyfriend, it’s your job to say that, but thank you.” He watches me for a few seconds and then goes back into the bedroom with an amused roll of his eyes. He’s right, maybe I don’t, but I’m nervous about going to meet Perrie for the first time tonight. What if she doesn’t like me? Okay Rosie, stop being stupid, of course she’ll like you. Perrie’s a really nice girl –it would surprise me if she didn’t.

When I leave the bathroom, deciding that Niall’s right –I don’t need anything but a few strokes of mascara- I go out into the bedroom to put a pair of heeled boots on that will go with my high-waisted disco pants and silver sequin crop top. It allows a band of my flat, tanned stomach to be shown between the garments, so I pick up my coat to wear over the top.

I walk into the living room and wait for Niall to do a mad dash of turning things off and collecting his phone, keys and wallet before we jump into the elevator. I like his choice of clothes tonight; he’s wearing a pair of jeans, trainers, a white top with long green sleeves, a snapback and his black jumper is over one shoulder–the one with the white stripes. He leans back onto the railing in the opposite side of the lift, putting all weight onto his elbows, so that he can cross his legs in front of him with a cheeky grin. I feel his eyes make their journey down my outfit for the night, and it makes me remember that I was going to pull my curls back into a high ponytail. “What are you smiling at?”

“Nothing,” there’s a glint in his eyes. If I didn’t know him as well as I do, then it would be intimidating, but Niall is harmless. “You look nice… and I like this…” He steps towards me and I close the gap so that his fingers can reach my waist. It tickles and I try to push him off but he only pulls me closer. I hardly ever wear crop tops in front of Niall; I’m still finding my feet in this relationship and growing more confident in showing off my body. It’s not something that I’m used to doing.

We’re both grinning like idiots when he pulls me in for a kiss and I smile against his lips. His open mouthed smirk sends fresh breathes of mint through his smooth teeth. His fingers still run softly over the skin above my trousers, so I hook an elbow around his neck, and whisper. “Not now Niall.” And boy am I glad that I’ve stopped him because, just as I step away from him, the doors open revealing the lobby to us both. Zayn is standing there, smirking at the two of us as a blush finds its way over my cheeks and Niall lets out an amused sigh before going to greet his buddy.

I kiss Zayn on the cheek and he addresses both of our confusion over where Perrie is. “My Missus’ dance rehearsals have run over schedule, so she’ll meet us at the restaurant.”

I just love the way that he refers to Perrie as ‘my girl’, ‘my missus’ or ‘my baby’. It literally makes my cheeks warm, and my eyes narrow in adoration, every time –they’re probably one of the cutest couples out of everyone living here.

“Great!” At first I was nervous but now I’m just excited to meet her.

We step outside, into the quickly darkening streets of London, and Niall comes to stand by my elbow. “I hope you don’t mind but we’re walking. It’s only a short walk…” I see Zayn put his hands into his pockets and give me a shy smile as he starts forward, allowing Niall and I to follow on.

“Well come on then.” I stop still and bite my lip as Niall hangs back with me.

He’s confused. “What?”

I look down at my shoes pointedly; they’ll be lethal to walk in. “You don’t expect me to walk in these do you?”

“Of course not princess.” He cocks his head to one side as he decides on his next move. I wait sweetly as he stands in front of me and bends down just a little. “Hop on then.”

In one swift jump I’m lifted onto his back and he secures his arms under my legs. Zayn finally looks back with a chuckle, and a shake of his head, as Niall runs beneath me to catch up with his best friend. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed the views from the streets of London more than I have being sat up here; sitting comfortably on Niall’s back with Zayn keeping pace beside us. I worry that I might be a little too heavy, but Niall swings us from side to side and jogs every once in a while, to show how at ease he is with carrying me.

“What’s it like being tall for once?” Zayn cheekily calls up to me past the light gusts of wind between us.

I kick my leg out; to get him with my heel for taking the piss out of my size, but Niall spins around to stop me from hitting him. “It’s cold!” He just chuckles at me and keeps walking. We’re going fast pace and each time anyone recognizes us the boys start to jog away from them jokingly and politely, so that they won’t take offense if we don’t stop to talk. I don’t want to stop and talk –being with my boyfriend and Zayn is just too much fun to disrupt.

The restaurant is in sight, right at the end of this street, when I curl my arms around Niall’s neck, leaning forward to kiss him once on the neck and once on the cheek.  The sky is a beautiful collage of pinks and oranges as the sun sets, and I rest my cool cheek against Niall’s warm one, to take advantage of the sight. I wouldn’t swap this one moment for the whole world; it is peaceful and beautiful and I couldn’t imagine spending time with these two lovely people in any less of a casual way.

Niall and I have been talking for about half an hour before it dawns on me how quiet the girls are being. When I start paying more attention the them, rather than the conversation Niall’s trying to have with me about our schedules before Christmas, I notice a few glares and stares that go between them as Perrie sits on her phone and Rosie attempts small talk with her. I’ve never seen Perrie look so withdrawn and dominant around another person. Rosie looks out of her depth as she gives up and pays attention to what Niall’s saying, occasionally stirring her drink out of boredom. We all finished our dinner about half an hour ago.

“I think I might be able to shove in some Christmas shopping around those two interviews but it’s going to be difficult.” I don’t even know which interviews he’s talking about.

“Yeah me too.” Before I know what I’m doing I look back at him to shoot glances at Rosie, letting him know that there’s something wrong with the girls, in what Perrie would call my ‘man-language’. Luckily he understands and starts to talk with Rosie more directly –leaving me to find out what’s wrong with Perrie.

“Babe, what are you looking at?”

Perrie just moves her phone in my direction so that I can see that she’s texting Jade. “She wants to know what we’re up to tomorrow.”

“I don’t think we’re doing anything… do you want to do something with her?”

“Yeah, her and Sam wanted to go out to the launch of some new club near the house.” Little Mix all share a house together, about 10 minutes from our block of flats. “Do you want to go?”

“Okay fine.” Sam’s a cool guy –he’s part of Diversity, one of the most popular dance troops after they won Britain’s Got Talent a year before we all entered for The Xfactor. Perrie types our reply into her phone and then looks up to see that I’m still watching her.

“Everything okay?” I drape my arm around her back casually.

“I was actually going to ask you the same thing?” She doesn’t understand what I mean, so I shoot my eyes over the table, to the two people sitting opposite us. Now she understands. Perrie just bites her lip.

“Don’t worry.” But I do worry. Something’s definitely up.

I’m about to ask her again, taking in a breath to start, but she knows me too well and so turns back to me to stop me from speaking. “We can talk later.” I narrow my eyes but say nothing. What can she tell me, back at the flat, that she can’t say here? It’s obviously something to do with Rosie or she wouldn’t be acting so hostile towards her.

“I’m going to the toilet. I’ll just be a second.” Rosie slides out of our private booth in TGI Fridays, with a small smile on her face. We all smile back, apart from Perrie who purses her lips to one side. Great, she might tell me if Roselyn’s not here. I don’t want to wait a couple of hours until we get home.

“Actually I’ll come with you. I’m bursting for the loo.” The differences in their accents are extremely audible, and just as noticeable as the differences in the ways that they act around each other. Whilst Roselyn is really trying to make an impression and be polite, my fiancé is careless and almost rude.

Rosie waits behind for Perrie to join her, but has to follow on as my girl gets up and takes lead, not even bothering to look back and keep pace with Rosie.

Once they’re out of sight I look straight at Niall. His mouth is slightly parted in shock. “Well… that’s um, a bit unexpected? I thought they’d have gotten along better than the rest of the girls…”

Niall has never seen Perrie act this way before, and to be honest, neither have I. “I know mate. I don’t know what’s gotten into her.” Niall just shrugs and takes a long drink from the cold beer in front of him.
