55. Morning Calls

“Lou, go away.” I rolled to bury my face in Niall’s arm and groaned whilst pulling the duvet to the top of the headboard, so that it covered both Niall and I; a sad attempt at trying to stop Louis from disturbing us.

It didn’t do much good when it came to blocking out the sound of Louis pulling the curtains wide open, except it did make it harder to breath. That’s when Niall’s eyes opened groggily and he gave me an apologetic smile before pushing it back down –letting all the cold air in. I tried to cover myself with the down blanket as best as possible when I heard Louis place a mug, on top of the bedside table beside Niall.

Louis stubbornly stood with his hand on his hip, telling me that he wasn’t going to leave until one of us ‘love birds’ got out of bed. “You’re mums on the phone downstairs –she wants to speak to you Rosie.” There was no chance of me being the one to stay in bed then. Louis was being serious and mature this morning. To be quite honest, it made me miss his childish –sometimes annoying self. I frowned at him and Niall rubbed at his eyes whilst he laughed sweetly.

“Go on love. I won’t be far behind you.”

I lay still for a few more seconds, keeping eye contact with Louis the whole time to show how unimpressed I was, when I clambered out from the duvets to see Niall’s eyes light up and small smirks appear on the two boys’ faces. I looked down self-consciously to see that my shorts had been pulled down slightly at the hip, where my t-shirt had been pulled up, revealing a large patch of brown skin.

“Take a picture –it might last longer.” It was meant to sound flirty and like a bit of a joke, but my tired voice made it seem dead and sarcastic; which explained why the two boys were screaming with laughter when I turned around.

When my feet had dragged me to the kitchen, I rubbed at my eyes to try and open them a little bit wider, whilst I put a hand up to wave to the other boys, who were all crowding around the marble kitchen island with cups of coffee.

Harry had his eyebrows raised at me. Zayn and Liam were snickering to themselves as the wished me a good morning.

“Morning sleepy head.”

“Bless her, she’s still half asleep. Do you reckon she’s actually sleepwalking?” My half-asleep state was the focal point of hilarity this morning –especially with Louis being in a more mature frame of mind, upstairs with Niall.

“Nah mate, she’s just been dragged out of bed before she wanted to be awake, haven’t you sunshine?”

I gave Liam and the others a tight lipped smile “What time is it?”

“Uhhm, just gone past half 10.” Zayn checked the time on his phone.

“Marie? Yeah, Rosie’s here now.” Rachel approached me from where she stood by the kettle and I saw that she had been the one who was talking to my Mum to pass by the time while she waited to speak to me. Her mobile’s phone bill was going to be huge.

“Why the hell is she ringing me before 9:30? I only spoke to her last night.” I mouthed to the boys and they shrugged. Rachel passed me the house phone, with a satisfied smirk plastered onto her face, which sent alarm bells ringing in my head. Oh shit. What had they been talking about? Probably me, but what?

“Hello, mum?” My voice sounded just as enthusiastic as I felt.

“Rosie! How are you?”

“Fine. Mum why are you ringing me? It’s 9:30.”

“Oh sorry sweetheart. I forgot about the hour’s time difference. I thought you’d have been awake.”

“Well I wasn’t. Louis had to wake me up.”

“I’m really sorry, I just wanted to see how everything was.”

“Seriously... I spoke to you last night?”

“I know, I know, but tell me.”

“There’s nothing to tell. I’m fine. Things are the same.”

I raised my eyebrows at Harry who couldn’t stop grinning, and he shook his head in reply. Rachel spoke up from beside me. “OH, don’t forget to tell Marie your news!” I elbowed Rachel in the ribs, knowing what she was getting at, but how did she know? Niall had only asked me last night.

Too late, she’d heard. “Oh, you have news?” Mum’s voice was too false –too sweet- for this not to have been planned.

“Oh. That news. Yeah, mum, I’m going out with Niall.” The way that I had said it –so bluntly and unenthusiastically- caused a laughing Harry to spit his tea back out into his yellow flowered mug.

“Niall’s the blonde one right?”

“Yes, Niall’s the blonde one.” By this point, Harry had fallen off of his stool and was holding onto his chest as he breathed deeply. Idiot. I rolled my eyes at Zayn and then chuckled at Liam. The two of them were stifling laughs as they looked between Harry and me–not knowing which one to pay more attention to; the conversation I was having with my mum or the scene that Harry was making.

“Oh that’s good! Do you like him?”

I leant against the counter and massaged my tired eyes “Yes, I like him.”

“Good.” There was a short silence on the other end of the line as we both paused awkwardly.

“Mum, you don’t seem very surprised?”

“Well I knew that you two were very alike, and that you obviously get on well, since me and your dad first met him. He’s a good lad and I’m sure that he’ll make you very happy.” It was very sweet of her to say, and I hoped that she was right, but I still wasn’t convinced that that was the only reason she didn’t sound as shocked as I had thought she would be. “Okay, okay. I kind of knew about it.”

“You knew about it?” My eyebrows rose immediately; without my own consent to do so.

“Well we got a phone call yesterday. It was from Niall. He asked your dad for his permission –he told him that he wanted to do it the proper way and so he wanted David’s consent.”

“And dad said yeah?”

“Of course Roselyn. All of the boys are lovely, they look after you really well and will make sure that you’re always safe, but there's something about Niall. He's special to you -it's obvious. Your dad and I know that –plus he asked for his permission, why would he even think about saying no?” My heart literally stopped. I felt no beating –my whole body stood still like a warm block of stone. “Rosie?”

“Yes I’m here.” My voice was quieter and I could feel tears threatening to cloud my vision. I felt so moved; so loved and cared for. A boy had never even asked me out on a proper date before –never mind asked my father for his permission to put a status on our relationship.

“You ok?”

“Yeah it’s just really nice to hear.”

“Aww, hunny I’m really happy for you. I can’t wait to see the two of you when we get back. Have you heard from Lola and Justin recently?”

“Lola...Yeah, she rang me last night. She’s having fun with Tommy and Julie. You know how they are with her, they always have fun together. Aunt Rebecca’s being really nice as well so I think she’s having fun.”

“That’s good, and Justin?”

“I text him yesterday to tell him what was going on this week and he just text me back saying how it was cool and he’s having fun with Carla but if the house needs looking after then they’ll stay round ours.”

“That sounds alright. Oh Rosie, before you go, Aunt Rebecca told me yesterday that she’s working earlier today so she won’t be able to pick up Lola, Tommy or Julie.” She paused on the line.

“So you want me to pick them up and then drop them at home with Uncle Nick?”

“Yeah, he still can’t go out with his leg in that blooming cast. I tell you, I don’t know how Rebecca let him go skiing right before Christmas.”

I laughed along with my mum and the rest of the kitchen started to join in with me. “Okay, I can do that. I’ll check if Lola needs anything before you get back so that I can drop that off to her later today.”

“Okay! And you know where your cousins’ primary school is?”

“Yeah, I remember from the last time I picked them up.”

“Right, that’s sorted then!”

“Anything else?”

“No, that’s it. Your great aunt is getting steadily better so we’ve booked our flights for Saturday. I’ll send you the times and details of them over text, but anyway, I just wanted to wish you a good day and tell you that I’m really happy for you. I can’t believe you’ve got your first boyfriend! And he’s a pop star!”

“Mum...” She was starting to get embarrassing “It’s just Niall, calm down.”

“Okay, okay, sorry. Well give my love to everybody; especially Rachel, Niall and the boys. Oh and don’t forget to give Lola a kiss from me and your dad.”

“I won’t.”

“Alright, Love you Rosie. I’m so proud of you. See you on Saturday.”

“Okay see you soon, love you lots mum.” And with that I hung up. I turned to see the boys and Rachel pulled me into a quick hug.

“Morning to you too!” I laughed. “Now who’s gonna make me a cup of tea?”

“I’ll do it.” Liam smiled and got up from his chair so that he could make me a drink and refill his own cup. I pulled up the chair next to his and sat down.

“Thanks Li!”

“Someone’s woken up a bit.”

“Yeah. I was practically dead when I walked down here-”

“-and a little bit grumpy too. We saw.” Zayn took a gulp from his drink and winked at me before I could take offense.

“Yeah, well it doesn’t help being woken up by this one.” I pointed at the stubbly boy who made his way through the doorway as I spoke. He smiled sheepishly and then kissed me on the cheek quickly before going to make some more toast.

“Good morning to you too.”

“Yeah, yeah. You’re not out of the dog house yet.” It was only banter but Louis pretended that his lip was wobbling and he was about to start crying. I leant forward and felt a pair of strong arms snake themselves around my waist like they had done last night.

“Hello love.”

“Hey Nialler.” I turned towards him so that I could see where his face rested on my shoulder. “Are you ready to meet some more of my family later?”

“Who am I meeting?” His arms were bare as he had a white, baggy vest on that held the logo for ‘5 Seconds Of Summer’.

“My little cousins Tommy and Julie. They’re younger than Lola and the ones that she’s staying with this week. You might meet my Uncle Nick too.”

“Ohkay. What are we doing with them?”

“Picking them up from school and then dropping them at home. You might want to stay in the car rather than walk into a school full of little children though. I’ll talk to you about it later anyway.”

“Okay love.” He pecked me on the cheek and then walked off in the direction of the fridge. “I’m starving, anyone else want anything?” Niall produced a whole bowl of different fruits from a compartment near the top, which Rachel and I proceeded to tuck into straight away, whilst he constructed huge sandwiches for him and anybody else who wanted one.

I tore my eyes away from the cheeky faced boy, who kept looking up at me to smile, so that I could look around the kitchen and survey all the faces that beamed back at me. I knew why their smiles were so big now; they were finally happy to see their friend happy –happy with me- who was also with one of their friends. I didn’t think that I’d ever be able to get enough of these days where we could all just sit together and enjoy each others’ company.
