110. Apologies

It’s when I hear my phone going off in the bedroom next door that I decide to turn the shower off and simultaneously hear the consecutive rings of the doorbell. “Oh shit.” Niall’s here; I must have taken longer in the shower than I thought.

I grab a white towel from the radiator rack and embrace the heat of the material as I wrap it around myself as many times as it will go –making sure to cover all the private parts of my body. I skip downstairs, thanking that there is nobody else home, and swing the door open to greet him. He looks beautiful, leaning against the door frame with his sun glasses on and his hair back in its regular quiff.

“Heeey gorgeous.” I smile at him as he pushes his sun glasses off of his face to tuck one of the temples behind his shirt. His now uncovered eyes roam up my body, to see the only thing covering my body up from him, and he gives a smirk. “Hey towel.”

“The towel says hello to you too.” I go in for a quick kiss but he holds me there. “Sorry I took so long, I couldn’t hear you over the shower water.”

“That’s fine. Hey, look at these curls.” He picks up a huge amount of hair to show me the tiny little ringlets which are already starting to form. It normally takes a few minutes to start going curly after I get out of the shower.

“Watch it, you’re gonna drip water all over the carpet.”

“You already have.” He’s right but it’s nothing that a hairdryer can’t solve. Niall’s taking his jacket and shoes off so I’m about to go back upstairs when he calls me back. “Wait here.”

“Close your eyes.” I roll them, before doing as he says, and feel his hands slot under my arms in the darkness. He lifts me up easily, until my face is right above his, so that he can kiss me once again. I’ll never get tired of kissing Niall, ever. Each time is so different and enjoyable –he makes me feel like the most special seventeen year old in the whole world.

I can feel his smirk against my lips and use my hands –which are currently just floating by my side- to run one over the soft short hair at the back of his head, and the other to clench my towel tightly around my chest.

After letting the bare soles of my feet touch back down on the floor, I open my eyes to a beaming smile and bite my lip as I cock my head to one side. “Why are you always so smiley?”

He reaches a hand forward to carelessly trace the water beads running down from my hair to my shoulders. “How couldn’t I be when you’re standing right in front of me?”

“You’re such a flirt.” I scoff.

“Just the way you like me.”

“Hmm… maybe.” We stand there for a few seconds longer, just smiling at each other like dorks, when I rise on the balls of my feet and quickly turn away. The water running down my face, legs, arms –practically everywhere- is starting to go cold, especially in this drafty hallway. “I’m gonna go and get dressed. Don’t come into my room.”

He challenges my warning with a raised eyebrow and his tongue goes to one side of his teeth. “Okay, okay. I’ll just make us both a drink or something. We need to stop meeting like this by the way.”

I’m only three steps up when I turn back to see him eyeing my current situation as he wonders towards the kitchen. Yesterday it was him in his towel –today it’s me.

“I know –so inconvenient.” Yeah right, by the look on his face I can see that he’d rather bump into me like this than fully dressed. “By the way if there’s a knock on the door it will be Lola. She’s been at her friend’s house since school finished.”

“Ohhh good! I can have a little catch-up with my girlfriend’s younger sister. I’m sure there’s tonnes to talk about regarding Zayn’s latest pap mobs and outfit choices.” His sarcasm is only a joke –I know that he loves talking to Lola and saying that she’s my boyfriend’s number one fan in this family is probably an understatement –only because she’s loved him for as long as they’ve been together –even if Zayn was her favourite.

“I’ll be quick.”

“You better.” It’s the last thing I hear him call from the kitchen, in a forced British accent –the one he always does with a sassy pout on his face- before I hop into my room and get out the outfit for tonight’s meal.

“Rosie Bloody Stephens-"

“-language!” I warn my sister jokily as she storms through my open door. I heard her coming up the stairs and along the corridor so it’s no surprise.

“It was nice of you to let me know that Niall was going to be opening the door to our house.”

I start laughing at her, trying my hardest not to, or I might smudge my black gel eyeliner. “Sorry, I forgot to tell you. Is it a problem?”

She slumps against the door way, running her fingers around the light switch panel on the wall. “Look, I know I’m supposed to be getting used to it, but after 3 years of dreaming of meeting them –even once, just once- it’s not exactly the easiest thing to get used to.” She’s smiling slightly. Lollie’s not pissed off, just a little indignant –it’s her favourite emotion to date and it’s becoming a regular thing in this house.

“Yeah, okay, I get that. Sorry monkey.” I watch her as she goes all soft at the recognition of her old nickname –I’ve not called her monkey for a while now, partly due to her recent discovery of maturity.

“It’s no problem, are you two going out tonight?”

“Yeah, I think Niall’s taking me to Nandos.”

“You know it’s only 5pm?”

“Yeahh.” I catch her with a sickly smile that looks like she’s just been caught eating an extremely sweet food. “What?”

“Nothing –I just think you guys are so cute. You’re the best girlfriend he’s had since forever.” I heard that there were rumours of Niall and Ellie Goulding. If that means my little sister think’s I’m better than the one and only Ellie, she has to be lying. Even I love Miss Goulding too bits –although the thought of her being Niall’s girlfriend it makes me feel sick with jealousy. Oh well. I heard that it was only a rumour...

Lola just rolls the comment off with a laugh. “I wish I had a boyfriend that treated me like Niall treated you.”

Lola.” I giggle, turning around to look at her properly. “You’re only 12.”

“Yeah, well I’m very mature for my age.”

“Hardly. Where’s Niall anyway?”

“Oh, just downstairs watching the football…”

“Bad idea…” my voice chimes as I raise an eyebrow at my confused sister. “There won’t be any food left.” It registers on her face and I could have sworn she looked seriously worried for a second or two. “He said he wanted to talk to you anyway. Don’t leave him by himself. That's mean.”

“Are you sure?” She runs a hand through her hair shyly. “He wants to talk to me?”

“Yeah, he loves spending time with you Lollie.”

“Okay, I’ll go downstairs and sit with him now, I just had to come and tell you that next time I have a heart attack when the boys are around here, without you telling me, my death’s on you.” She waits for my answer when my phone starts ringing and I see an unknown number.

“Sorry babe, I’ve got to take this.”

“Okay, I’ll tell Nialler.” She skips out of the room, leaving me with only one thing to do.

“Hello?” Who is it; could a fan have gotten hold of my number? I’m a little bit nervous as I wait for their voice on the other end of the line. There’s no screaming so it must be a good sign.

“Um… Hi Pet.” ‘Pet’? There’s only one person it could be.

“Yep, that’s me. Sorry, Zayn gave me your number –I hope you don’t mind.”

“To be honest, I’m not sure how I feel about that yet.”

“I don’t blame you. Look, he only gave it to me because he knew I wanted to apologise about last night. I could blame it on rehearsals and stress and stuff like that, but I won’t, because that wouldn’t be fair on you.” Oh, so now she cares about what is and isn’t fair?

“I’m listening.” Now that I’m ready and my makeup is finished, I decide to get up and go downstairs –Niall should know that it’s Perrie who’s talking to me. Just in case things get heated. I hope they don’t.

“Look, it’s hard to say over the phone but I want to make it up to you.” Niall is sitting on the sofa with Lola and they’re chatting quietly as they both try to figure out what’s going on in the football match on the television. Niall spots me and smiles, patting the arm of the sofa next to him for me to go and sit on. When I get there he changes his mind and pulls me onto his lap.

He whispers “Who is it?” whilst I block the microphone.

“Perrie.” He’s briefly shocked but then relief passes over his features. I know he was worried when we got back to his last night –it was obvious.

“I was wondering if you’re doing anything tonight?” Niall, who is currently complementing my sister on her perfectly shaped nails, perks up as he briefly hears what Perrie says.

“Oh yeah, me and Niall are going out for dinner.”

“That’s a shame… I was hoping the two of you would be able to come to mine and let me make it up to you. I’m really sorry just in case you haven’t guessed yet.” I stifle a giggle –it is obvious- she sounds either disappointed or embarrassed with herself. Before I can say anything else about what a shame it is Niall snatches my phone and puts it two his ear with a wink.

“Yeah, we’d love to. When do you want us there?” Thanks Niall. I hear her mumble into his ear and wait for him to put it on loud speaker.

“-nip out and do that. So yeah, if you get here for around 6:30 or 7:00?”

“That’s cool.”

I start to warm to the idea myself. She sounds a lot cooler now that she’s not having a go at me for seducing her fiancé. “Okay, we’ll be there.”

“Great… Any dinner preferences?”

I look at Niall with a smirk and he answers for the two of us. Neither of us are particularly fussy when it comes to food –I’m quite good with new and weird foods to say that I used to have trouble keeping a kid’s yoghurt in my stomach, and Niall will try practically anything. “Whatever you’re used to cooking will be fine. Don’t go overboard.”

“Just make sure you’ve got enough to feed this one.”

“In other words double the amount that Zayn normally eats.”

“Exactly.” The two of us laugh and Niall nudges me with a smile. Lola watches us with amused eyes whilst she listens in to the audible phone call.

“Okay, see you soon. And it will be just us three and Zayn by the way.”

“Like a double date?”

“Exactly Niall –except the girls might actually get along this time.” I have a feeling that she’s right.

“See you soon.”

“Bye loves.”

I wrap my arms around Niall’s shoulders, with an excited squeal, and hug him tight. He just laughs and I notice Lola squirm at the other end of the couch. “If you two are going to kiss can you at least give me some warning?”

“Hmmm…” Niall is debating it when I wink at my little sister, giving her enough time to cover her face with her hands like a child, and place and quick kiss on his soft lips. He’s the best boyfriend I could ask for, he’s learnt more about me in the last month than Rachel has learnt over the past 12 months. That’s expected though –there’s only so much a best friend can know compared to your boyfriend, and he’s made me realise things about myself that I've never actually known before...
