7. Phone calls

I resisted. I really did. I tried my absolute hardest not to smile back, but there was something about Jeremiah that melted away allof the tension that was welled up inside me. That one smile shot hrough me that just forced a smile onto my face. We just stood there, smiling at each other like idiots, and, as much as I wanted to, I couldn't look away. I remember when it used to be easy. Back before I dated Stephen. Back when we were thirteen and Jeremiah had a crush on me. Back before Amber Lily moved here freshman year.

"Just a sec."

He pulled his phone out of his pocket.

"It's Delaney."

Delaney. His girlfriend. Why did that make me feel wierd?

"I can call her back..."

I really wanted to say yes.

"No, no," I shook my headd, more at myself than him, "Go ahead."

"Alright then."

He stood up and answered his phone.

He paused and bit his bottom lip. I laugh silently for a second.

"Yeah...Yeah...Look, it's not the best time right now.

Another pause.

"I know she's your friend...Yeah, Iknow that."

"Well I don't see how that's my fault."

He let out a deep sigh.

"Yes, I did say that."

Wow, she talked a lot.

"That's none of your business...Yeah that is how I feel."

He sits back down, not quite as close to me as before.

"It doeesn't have to be like this....If that's how you really feel...Yeah, I'm sorry too. Bye."

He burried his face in his hands. i slid closer to him.

"Are you okay?"

"Amber called Delaney."

"Oh," right, I forgot they were friends.

"Did you guys..."

I sighed and put my arm around him. He leand his head on my shoulder.

"I'm sorry Jere. If I hadn't..."

"It's not your fault.

"But if..."

"Really Cassidy, I'm fine."

He turned to look at me. He didn't seem hurt. Maybe a little more exhausted, but pretty much the same.

"I think that's you," Jeremiah nudeged me with his shoulder.

I looked down at my phone.

"It's my mom."

"Tell Laura I said hi."

"I will."
