Chapter 16

“Liam!” My mum grinned as soon as I got out of my car. She ran towards me with her arms wide open. She wore a pink apron that I vaguely remembered giving to her for mother’s day when I was in fourth grade. She looked like she was about to cry when she wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Hey, mum,” I replied, wrapping my arm around her waist.

“I’ve missed you! You don’t come around often enough,” she scolded when she let go. I laughed. She’s given me the same greeting every time I came home to her.

“Sorry,” I replied. I really am though, because I could actually come by more often but I’m usually too busy to visit home. “But I saw you when I got home from the army.”

“Which was a month ago. That’s too long for me,” she pouted. I laughed at her.

“Merry Christmas Eve!” I said and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“Merry Christmas Eve to you too, sweetheart,” she chuckled as she gave me another hug.

“Aren’t you cooking something?” I asked her as I eyed her apron.

“Your dad’s doing it for me,” she winked.

I laughed. Of course he is. She always made him do the work because she claims he never does anything around the house. Which is half true, most of the time he’s glued to the couch and watching TV. I went to the boot of my car to take out the presents I brought and followed my mum into the house.

“Liam!” A mop of light brown hair came barreling towards me. I stumbled back when she half tackled me.

“Hey, Isabel,” I said, hugging her back. She was always the short one out of the three of us and she’s the oldest.

“Holy shit, you’re so tall!” She exclaimed when she pulled away and looked up at me. She only came up to my shoulders and she was wearing heels.

“Nah, you’re just short,” I winked. She pushed my shoulder and walked to the kitchen.

“Oh my god! Is it the Liam Payne?” Stella mocked. I rolled my eyes at her.

“Hey, Stell,” I said.

She laughed and gave me a hug. “Man, I haven’t seen you for three years.”

“Well, if you were here a month ago, you would’ve seen me,” I teased with a smirk.

“Well, sorry if I had to fly out to Dublin to check out our new branch,” she said with a roll of her eyes. Stella was one of the founders of an events management company so she owned a part of it and they only just started to branch out to Dublin.

“How’s that going?” I asked.

“It’s going really well. We’ve already had over six clients in two months,” she replied with a proud grin. I was proud of her too. Even though she didn’t dream to be an events manager, she was awfully great at it.

“That’s great, Stell! I’m so proud of you,” I told her and she grinned before walking away. I walked towards the kitchen and slung my arm around my father’s shoulder. We spoke for a bit before my mum told me to get out of her kitchen. She then ordered me to help my sister’s set up the table. I reluctantly obeyed. Setting up the table was the worst because my mum sets it up differently every year and it had to be exactly how she wanted it.

We ate as soon as she set the food on the table. It was a great lunch and it made me miss my mother’s cooking more than anything. I’ve missed my family for the past three years. I was so happy to be back home.

Once we finished our lunch, we went on to presents. We had a cycle in opening presents in the household. This year, it was my dad, then Stella, then me, then my mum and lastly it was Isabelle. Once the present opening was over, I stayed for another hour before leaving.

When I got back, I picked up my sack of present from my apartment and headed to Niall’s. Every year we get together on Christmas Eve to have a few drinks and give each other our presents. It would only be us with the exception of the girlfriends/wife (in Zayn’s case). They invited Tanya, much to my surprise. It was always a band thing and we wouldn’t invite anyone else unless it was a significant other but Tanya and the guys became fast friends so it was understandable.

They were all in the living room with ten pizza boxes on the coffee table and alcohol everywhere else. I was the last one to arrive, surprisingly. I was surprised to see Perrie here seeing as she was supposed to be in Australia with the rest of Little Mix. Tanya was sat next to Niall and they were laughing about something when I walked in. I felt that same tightening in my chest I got whenever I saw them together but I ignored them and greeted them all with a merry Christmas.

“Finally! It’s presents time,” Louis cheered. I grinned as I settled myself beside Tanya. I gave her a quick hug before grabbing a pizza.

“Wait, Lou, let Liam eat first,” Eleanor said.

“But he just came from his mum’s! I’m pretty sure he’s eaten enough for all eight of us.” Louis had a point. I did eat more than my share but mum always cooked enough for twenty people.

“Nah, it’s okay,” I told her. “I want my presents.”

Tanya gave me a shove with her shoulder. “Someone obviously got spoiled.”

I winked at her. “Of course.”

We each gave the presents to whoever it was for. Once I got all mine, I dropped it back into the sack I brought. Christmas Eve was only about handing present to each other and Christmas Day was when we all opened it. Then we went on to drink and eat pizza.

By the time it was 11 I was half drunk. I could still walk in a straight line and memorise the alphabet but my words were starting to slur. I spoke to Tanya for a bit then Zayn, Harry and I played some Mario kart, which was hard when you’re half drunk. It soon turned it to a competition. There were four teams: Eleanor and Perrie, Zayn and Niall, Harry and Louis and me and Tanya. We played four rounds and by then end, Tanya and I were the winners. It was our teamwork of course; we were always good at teamwork. They were all surprised to see how unbelievably good we were together and they all vowed to separate us whenever we played a game like that.

When it was midnight we all greeted each other a merry Christmas on Niall’s balcony as we watched the fireworks burst in silence. Louis was stood near the railing with his arm around Eleanor’s waist, they spoke in whispers and I didn’t linger on them for too long because I felt like I was invading their privacy. The same was going with Zayn and Perrie but on the other side of the balcony. I was stood between the couple with Tanya as she watched the fireworks in all seriousness and complete serenity. She was leaning on the railing with her chin resting on her hands. Niall and Harry were sitting on the chairs with a beer in their hands.

Maybe it was because I was half drunk and it was Christmas and I was happy and the fireworks were bursting its lively colors against the dark sky, but I couldn’t take my eyes off Tanya. She looked so peaceful and happy and beautiful with the light of the fireworks on her face. Her green eyes focused heavily on the lights. Her hair fell over her shoulders, framing her face evenly. I just couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

Man, maybe I am drunk.

When the fireworks ended we walked back to the living room. We all drank more beer and ate a few snacks and we talked and laughed.

“We need more beer,” Tanya announced as she got up.

“I’ll help you,” Niall offered and Tanya gave him a smile then they both walked towards the kitchen. I watched them cautiously, that protective feeling bursting in my chest and flowing through my veins. I sighed then turned my attention back to the beer in my hand.

“Is everything okay, Liam?” Perrie asked. Her eyes scanned my face with a knowing look. I nodded and brought the drink to my lips. She pursed her lips but didn’t push on it.

However, Louis was more than happy to push on it since he was drunk. “Liam, are you jealous?”

I looked at him incredulously. “No.”

“Then why do you look jealous?” He slurred.

“I’m not. I’m just looking out for her, she’s my best friend,” I shrugged.

“Who are you trying to convince?” He continued and took another swig of his drink.

I shook my head at him and announced that I needed to go to the bathroom. I left before I could hear them say anything else. I didn’t really need to go but I needed an escape. There may have not been a lot of questions asked from them but I have never felt so interrogated in my whole life. As I walked down the hallway and passed the kitchen, a movement caught my eye.

There in the kitchen, with the beer on the countertop and the fridge still open, Tanya’s arms were wrapped around Niall’s neck. Niall’s arms were tightly wrapped around her waist and their faces close to each other and undoubtedly kissing. My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. I have never felt so crushed. My blood boiled in my veins and as my heart dropped, I felt like knives were piercing it on its way down. Then I started to get angry.

I sullenly continued my walk to the bathroom, that heartbroken feeling in me. I knew I couldn’t be heartbroken because I never thought of Tanya like that. But there I was heartbroken and incredibly jealous. I splashed my face with cold water to sober up but that only took away the drunken feeling and left the heartbreak and jealousy to increase.

I took deep breaths before wiping my face and walking back to the living room. There was more beer on the table and Niall and Tanya were seated on the sofa, laughing together. It seems that whenever I saw them together all I saw was them laughing. The anger increased even more but I plastered a smile on my face and grabbed another beer.

By the time it was three in the morning I was off my face. Perrie and Eleanor kept checking on me worriedly. Tanya half cheered me on and half told me to stop before I got alcohol poisoning. Niall fell asleep at around two but that was because when he drank a lot, he got incredibly sleepy. Harry, Zayn and Louis were happy that I was getting drunk. Ever since I found out that I had two healthy working kidneys, their ultimate goal was for me to get drunk.

But I wasn’t getting drunk for the sake of it. I was drinking to numb that stupid heartbroken and jealous feeling right in the middle of my being. But no matter how much alcohol I consumed, it was still there, bubbling and ready to be released. Tanya was completely oblivious to my behaviour. She acted as though what I saw in the kitchen didn’t happen and for some reason that angered me even more. I mean, at least acknowledge the fact she just made out with my best friend. I know that I gave Niall my “permission” but that didn’t stop the anger or that grave feeling in me.

I continuously told myself to get myself together, to stop drinking and sort out what I was feeling. But I ignored that voice in my head and settled on the mantra I set for myself, Tanya is my best friend, I am being stupid. Tanya is my best friend, I am being stupid. It, in no way, worked but it gave me something else to think about other than the image of the both of them kissing.

I drank, and, drank, and drank until I couldn’t move anymore. Tanya brought me back to my apartment and set me on my bed. I could vaguely feel her peeling off my shoes and wrapped the covers around me.

The last thing I remembered was her stroking through my hair as she hummed me to sleep.

I wanted to get this in before I went on a holiday to Melbourne. I’m hoping I’d be able to write the next chapter while I’m there. Hope you liked this chapter J
