War Cry

*unbelievably slow updates* One Direction is put onto a three year break. All of the guys have decided what to do with their lives in the meantime. Liam Payne chose to go into the army. He was glad to meet his best friend, she was nice and funny and someone so easily to get along with. She made his army experience a lot more enjoyable. But what if another band member finds her just as enjoyable as he does? Would he be jealous? Or would he be happy for her?

1. Prologue

“Thank you, London!” I yelled through my microphone. The crowd screamed louder, their lights pulsing through the dark arena. So many nameless faces chanted our names. I felt the thrilling adrenaline that usually pumped through my veins whenever I was on stage. “It was so great performing to you all before our break. Isn’t that right, Niall?”

“Yes, Liam. We’ve performed in so many countries and we’ve loved every place we’ve been to. We can’t wait to see you all again,” Niall boomed with his arm waving toward the crowd. I walked to the other side of the stage, adjusting my ear piece to hear Niall better over the loud screaming. I high fived Louis on the way and ruffled Sandy’s hair. I waved to the people that were on the upper concourse and they screamed even louder.

“You were all amazing tonight and we can’t wait to see you guys again in three years!” Louis continued from the middle of the stage. I walked back to the other side and sat beside Zayn and Harry who were both talking to Dan. “I see some girls crying-”

“Don’t cry!” Harry said, dragging the words. “Put a smile on your dial...” He started to sing but ended up muttering the words. I leaned forward and laughed at him and he smiled sheepishly at me.

“Anyway, we’d just like to sing one more song that we all know you are waiting for,” Niall said just as Dan and Sandy got back to their instruments. The familiar tune came through my earpieces.

“Written on these walls are the stories that I can’t explain,” Harry started to sing in his deep voice. I stood beside Louis in the centre of the stage and wrapped an arm around him as we both marveled at the view of the crowd. It was such a thrill.

“She told me in the morning she don’t feel the same about us in her bones,” I sang as I stroked Louis’ face. I grinned at him and started to walk to Sandy. “It seems to me that when I die these words will be written on my stone.”

“And I’ll be gone, gone tonight. The ground beneath my feet is open wide,” Zayn sang from the opposite side. I watched as the lights of people’s One Direction sticks and flashlights on their phone wave through the air in a synchronised way.

“The story of my life, I take her home. I drive all night to keep her warm. And time is fro-o-o-zen,” I grinned as I started to wave my arm side to side in the air along with the lights that were the only visible things in the dark arena.

“Written on these walls are the colours that I can’t change,” Niall sang from the platform in the middle of the stage. I stood beneath him.

“I know that in the morning I’ll see us in the light upon your ear,” I began, pushing my hand forward as I got into the song. “Although I am broken, my heart is untamed still.”

“And I’ll be gone, gone tonight. The fire beneath my feet is burning bright,” Louis continued as he stood beside Niall on the platform above me.

“The story of my life, I take her home. I drive all night to keep her warm. And time is fro-o-o-zen,” I harmonised with the rest of the boys. I still couldn’t believe that this was the third world tour we’ve done. It seems like just yesterday I was auditioning for the second time on X Factor. Now here we were, performing to thousands of girls.

“And I’ve been waiting for this time to come around,” Zayn sang, looking into the crowd in front of him, “But baby running after you is like chasing the clouds.”

“The story of my life, I take her home. I drive all night to keep her warm. And time is fro-o-o-zen,” Niall sang in a falsetto tone completely ignoring the fact that it was supposed to be in a deep voice.

We then all sang the chorus all the while moving towards each other to the middle of the stage. This was it. The Where We Are tour is over. We won’t be back for another three years. I looked around the arena, trying to take everything in and memorise every small thing.

“Thank you, London! We’ll be back.” I shouted before we all bowed.

“Thank you!” The rest of the boys shouted and we all ran off the stage in different directions. I ran through the middle, Niall jumped off through the whole in the stage, Harry and Louis ran off from the sides and Zayn jumped off the stage and ran towards the back. I vaguely heard the confetti going off in the arena.

The boys and I met up and we all jogged towards the black van that was already running with the doors wide open for us. We immediately got in, Zayn and I facing the back with the other three boys facing us. I grabbed a bottle from the floor and gulped half of it down. I could feel the sweat on the back of my neck.

“Three years, guys.” Harry mumbled when he finished downing his water. I sighed thoughtfully.

“I know.” Zayn replied.

We were silent for a few minutes. I don’t about the guys but I was feeling nostalgic. I remembered the X factor video diaries. I remembered being with Danielle, even though we broke up last year she was still a major part of my life when I was in One Direction. I remembered the X Factor live tour. I remembered recording Up All Night. I remembered when What Makes You Beautiful was number 4 on the Billboard top 10. I remembered when we released Up All Night. I remembered performing in Madison Square garden with sold out concerts. I remembered the 84 awards we’ve won and the 146 nominations. I remembered Live While We’re Young and Little Things and Kiss you. I remembered when we went on the Take Me Home tour. I remembered when we made the movie and Best Song Ever. I remembered absolutely everything and it upset me knowing that I won’t be able to see these four boys everyday for the next three years.

“I’m going back to Bradford and I’m going to stay there for a while,” Zayn admitted. Honestly, it wasn’t a surprise for any of us. Zayn loves his family more than anything. “Then I’m going to go with Perrie when she goes on tour,” he continued. That wasn’t a surprise either. He absolutely adored Perrie and ever since their small, unknown wedding at the end of 2013 he’s never once gone a day without talking to her.

“Eleanor and I are going to travel,” Louis confessed. That was a surprise. I mean, Louis’ been traveling since 2010. How much more traveling could he take? “This is the first time I could actually see everything and i want to do that with Eleanor. She’s never seen much of Australia and she says that’s where she wants to go the most.”

“I don’t know what i’m going to do,” Harry said quietly. “This is all I’ve ever known to do. I’ve been doing this since I was 16 pretty much.”

“I think I’m going to stay in Australia for a year,” Niall announced. “It’s something i’ve been wanting to do even before X Factor. It wasn’t my first choice but from the handful of times we’ve been there, it seems like an amazing place to live in.”

I pursed my lips and unconsciously twisted the cap of the empty bottle in my hand. I’ve wanted to do so many things before X Factor. I wanted to move to Australia, I wanted to become a firefighter, I wanted to become a track runner. There were so many things I’ve wanted to do. So what came out of my lips was a shock to me but at the same time, I sort of knew I was going to do this. “I’m going to join the army.”

The boys’ eyes widened a bit. I guess it was a little extreme, joining the army especially with a career as promising as mine. But serving my country gave me a great deal of satisfaction. I also get to help. I didn’t give much thought to the idea of me possibly dying. I never thought about the dangers that could occur. All I thought about was helping and serving Britain.

“Are you sure?” Louis finally asked, breaking the frozen air.

I nodded my head. I don’t think i’ve been more sure about anything.

“Good luck, mate,” Niall said as he patted my shoulder.

“Don’t die,” Harry joked.

“You’ll do great,” Zayn stated.

“I hope I’ll see you on TV,” Louis jested. I smiled at them.

“Remember, management might call us randomly and ask us to do an interview from wherever we are. Also, try not to get mobbed. I don’t want to turn on the radio or whatever to find out that one of you lost all of your clothes on the street because girls took all of your clothing. And try to do something completely normal, yeah? Like, get a job or something. Go for a short term degree, I don’t know. it would be great to do something normal, wouldn’t it,” I lectured. I couldn’t help it. This was how I was the past four years with these boys.

“I’m going to miss you all,” Harry mused as the van stopped outside of the complex we all lived in. We all huddled into a group hug outside of the glass doors. I turned to our body guards and shook all of their hands, thanking them for coming on tour with us.

“I’m leaving first thing in the morning,” Zayn announced in the elevator.

“Same,” Harry said.

“I thought you didn’t know where you were going?” I asked him.

“I don’t. I’m just going to pack bags, get into my car and drive to wherever. I’ve always wanted to do that, you know? Just drive without any intentions,” he mused and I nodded my head.

“I’m leaving next week,” Niall stated. That was good since he has to pack a lot to move to Australia.

“Eleanor and I are leaving in three days,” Louis said as he finished typing on his phone, undoubtedly texting Eleanor.

“I’m signing up in a few days,” I told them.

It was quiet for a while. Then the elevator dinged and Zayn and Harry got out. We all waved goodbye then the elevator went up again, dropping Niall off on the next floor. Louis and I got off on the floor above Niall’s and we said our goodbyes, our good lucks and our have funs.

Well, hello three year break.

It sounds so depressing! But I guess it’s always depressing whenever someone talks about the band going on a long break or something. Anyway, this story idea came from Dagmar Ort. I want to thank her for giving me her idea and letting me write it for her, i feel so honoured. Haha.

So, I hope you enjoy this story and Dagmar, I hope I end up writing this in the way you were hoping! Haha, xx.
