49. Act 48

When I came to, we were still in the conference room. I was on the ground, and Logan laid over me, shielding me with his body. He looked down at me, relieved to see that I had awoken. Together we sat up and looked around the room. Raize had been shot backward somehow and her body lay prone against the other wall, unconscious. The officials and guards had taken cover beneath the table and were just beginning to peek above it.

My gaze made its way back to Logan, who was staring down at me. He wasn’t looking at my face though. My eyes followed his until they rested on the necklace. The luminescent stone glowed softly, dimming more and more with every passing moment. My eyes tried to comprehend what my mind could not. Beneath the stone, I could see the irritated red hue of burned skin. That explained the searing pain.

“Does it hurt?” His gentle tone startled me from my daze. I looked to find Logan’s silver gaze searching my face for an answer. I shake my head, ignoring the sore pain radiating from the burn. His hand lightly cups my cheek and I can see the tenderness glistening in his eyes.

“What happened?” I asked quietly. Tenderness was replaced by dismay. The slight shake of his head conveyed his own confusion.

“Where did you get that?” he asked, eyeing the stone once more. My fingers lightly curled around it, careful to avoid my burn as they picked it up.

“It was given to me in the market place,” I told him quietly. A small part of me wanted to keep it a secret. A deep sense of foreboding crept into my mind.

“Who gave it to you?” he asked, his tone was a little bit more forceful. When I did not offer any reply his hands gripped my shoulders tightly. “Fia, answer me.”

I stood abruptly, breaking away from his grasp in the process, and took a step back. “I do not take orders from you, Logan.” My eyes narrowed with the contempt in my voice. “Where or who I acquired this from is my personal business, something you are not apart of anymore. We are united in an alliance now, and I accept the condition stated by the council, First Master Magician Ayres.”

Logan’s eyes began to spark with anger at my words. “You can’t just-“

“Yes, I can,” I cut him off. I didn’t have the time to listen to him. I couldn’t stand the pain of rejecting him for much longer. If I listened to his words, I feared losing my resolve in the process. This was the way it had to be. This was the only way to save my country.
