24. Act 23

Time seemed to speed up at that moment. The room suddenly filled with guards, ushering the councilmen away to safety. I was advised to go along with them, but I refused. I had to find Logan before something happened. One of the guards directed me to a side exit before regrouping with the councilmen to continue on with their mission. As I stepped outside my gaze was pulled upward. Billows of smoke covered the sky, blocking the stars, and instead showing torrents of blazing embers flying through its toxic smoke. Brought back to the ground by the hundreds of screams I tried to take in the scene. Hordes of people were fleeing in every direction from burning stalls and buildings. The clang of swords rang out high in the air, as well as the sound of marching boots. I climbed up onto the roof of a home to get a better look.

My breath left me as I watched imperial soldiers seizing the city. They invaded the market square, carrying torches and striking down anyone in their path without hesitation. Quickly, the square was being turned into a blood bath. My foot slipped on the roof and I slid down, just barely catching myself on the ledge. I dropped down the next few feet to the ground, my mind zeroed in on one goal. I had to find Logan.

I ran with the crowd away from the square. We had agreed to meet in the very same alley where we had departed from each other. Slipping between people, and cutting through allies, I hurried knowing every moment that passed was another tragedy. My route was halted though when I saw a soldier in the distance, heading my way. They were expanding out from the square. And then it dawned on me, this was not just an invasion, this was an extermination. The advancing soldier caught me in his gaze. His eyes locked on me as he stalked towards me. My body trembled with rage, and automatically launched me into an attack position. I waited until he got closer, his blade arched high, until he swung it down at me. I swerved to his side, struck his hands hard at the wrists, causing him to drop his sword. He eyes locked onto me and he pounced, knocking me to the ground. We struggled, but he pinned me to the ground. His thumbs centered on my throat, attempting to crush my windpipe while my hands repeatedly struck his face. My sight started to tunnel, as my lungs screamed for air.

I did not see the figure until it slashed the sword into the soldier. He rolled off me, screaming in pain while the figure helped me sit. My lungs gulped down sweet air, and my vision began to focus on Ida’s frightened face.

“Are you alright?!” she asked me, searching for any wounds. I nodded as my mind began to think once more. She let out a breath of relief. “Good, we have to go. My brother and Logan are waiting for us at the black lake. There isn’t much ti-“ Neither of us had seen the soldier draw the sword from his wound. The blade was thrusted straight through her back, its bloody tip stained the front of Ida’s white shirt. For a brief moment we shared a look of surprise, and then the light left her eyes.

Her body slumped against mine, still warm, as my eyes stared straight in front of me. Deftly, I heard the wet gurgling gasps of the soldier as he died, satisfied with his revenge. I moved, tenderly laying Ida’s body on the ground and removed the sword. Stealing the sheath from the dead soldier I fastened the sword to my side. After it was secure, I bent down and gingerly picked up Ida’s limp body. My feet began to move without command towards safety. Each footstep kept time with a moment. Each moment held its own tragedy.
