1. Hope and despair

I stared at my reflection a last time; my black tuxedo had been made to measure and was fitting me perfectly. It was the least I could try to do; I have been waiting for weeks for this day to come. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down; I was way too excited.

“Harry? Are you ready?” Louis knocked on my door. “If you don’t hurry up we’re going to be late, mate!” He winked, knowing perfectly that I wouldn’t stand missing even a few minutes of tonight’s event.

I rushed toward him yelling, “Ready!” and we both ran toward his car. We stepped in and he drove away as fast as he could, though we weren’t far from school. A few minutes later, he parked the car and we quickly got out. I was more excited than ever and a bit nervous as well.

Louis put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed it slightly.  “Don’t worry, dude,” he muttered winking. I nodded lightly even though I wasn’t really convinced myself.

Tonight was prom night. I have been looking forward to this night so long! Tonight I would find Skylar and ask her out. I knew she has been rejecting me for years but this time ‘No’ was not the answer I would accept to hear. Tonight, she would be mine.

We both made our way into the ballroom which already was crowded with people. The walls were white and bunch of flowers were hanging on them; making the room unrecognisable. On the right side was a buffet and many people were beside it, drinking cocktails and talking happily. On the other side were a few benches but all were empty as it only was the beginning. Lights were soft, giving the room a warm atmosphere. Everything was perfect for now.

I looked around me, searching for her elegant figure and wondering how she was dressed. Louis, next to me, was doing the exact same thing probably because he knew the sooner we would find her, the happier and less nervous I’d be. My heart was beating fast; what if she decided not to come?

Suddenly, I felt Louis’ hand on my forearm; he held it tight and pulled me away quickly. But it was too late; I saw what he was pulling me away from. In a corner of the room was standing Skylar; but she wasn’t alone. She was glued to a boy and they were kissing with passion. I stared at them; my excitement leaving me; while Louis was dragging me away. He led me to the corridor and once there, I collapsed on the floor, staring blankly ahead. He knelt down beside me but didn’t talk. As a matter of fact, it would have been useless. Nothing he would have said would have cheered me up. Hope I had since a long time were now broken. Everything had collapsed. Why was I still here? I lost everything.

I stood up and ran away, ignoring Louis calling me back. I had never felt so miserable, so broken. All I needed was to be alone; to be far from here; far from her.

All of the sudden, I bumped into someone and fell on the floor. I got up quickly, apologizing. I held my hand out to help the other person. She stood up and we faced each other. My eyes met her sparkling ones and my world changed at once.

“I...I’m really sorry,” I stuttered, unable to take my eyes off her face. She smiled weakly and her eyes lit up.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” She walked away but turned around to wave at me afterwards.

Do you believe in love at first sight? I don’t. But what is the feeling that is growing inside me, then? It’s like a spell had been cast on me; I feel mesmerized. Could this be love with a capital L?

I was still staring where she had stood a few minutes ago when I felt a hand on my shoulder.

“Harry, at last! I thought you would have gone further!” I heard Louis’ voice behind me. “Harry? Hello? What are you staring at?” He moved his hand in front of my eyes.

“Who is she?” I ignored his question.

“Who are you talking about?” I pointed the place where she was standing. “The girl with the blue dress,” I told him as if it was obvious.

“That’s Sameerah, Liam’s sister,” he whispered awkwardly. I turned around and looked at him intensely but he avoided my stare.

“Liam’s sister...” I repeated. She could have been anybody’s sister; but she was Liam’s.

It was the end of all the hopes that had started to fill in me; everything was over. Because of him, this love is impossible.
